Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs?
"Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs?" by Carmela Coyle is a picture book about a little girl who goes for a hike with her dad, while asking him questions about what princesses do or look like. She asks questions about what princesses wear and what they look like, if they pick up rocks, and of course, if they kiss frogs. The father encourages his daughter to be her own kind of princess by answering the questions while still allowing the daughter to be her own kind of princess, instead of answering with the stereotype of princesses. The father encourages his daughter's imagination and out of the box thinking of princesses as they hike throughout a forrest, stream and valley. The theme of this book is breaking gender stereotypes, and allowing girls to become whatever type of "princess" they want to be, whether it is the typical princess or not. I thought this book was a wonderful way for girls to see that they can be any type of princess that they can imagine or want to be. It shows young girls that princesses do not have to adhere to what is typically portrayed of them in stories, but rather that they can be themselves and still be considered a princess, if that is something they want to be. I would recommend this book to first or second grade girls. I believe that this is the age where girls start to take on typical gender roles and start to see how society sees them and their role because of their gender. This book would be a good reminder that they can still be girls or princesses, but can be their own type of princess, instead of what society tells them they should be.
