Claymore, Vol. 7: Fit for Battle

4.9/5

Ophelia was fun!World: The art is great, the sense of motion as I’ve said is amazing. The new creature designs are getting better and better. The world building is solid, it calls back to the past which is a nice little touch and moves the story forward with the new top 5. Story: The pacing is breakneck and at times the speed makes the story a bit too fast for the small emotions and the time needed to catch your breath lacking but it’s still pretty good. The speed also gives the story a lack of depth which this book really needs especially for the world building and the emotions that were so good in the first couple of books (the Teresa arc was the best). The ideas of the Awakening and the difference with Clare and the other three is still a bit iffy for me and not clearly defined but oh well. The scene with Raki and Clare kissing is kinda wrong as I thought the relationship was a sibling one so far...that was an odd choice. The end result of the arc with the new Awakened looked amazing and the who does not love a good training montage. Characters: Clare is getting better and better as a character but her powers still need a bit of a clarification, and this is when the book needs to slow down a bit to at least do a little info dumping to give Clare and the world more depth. Her relationship with Raki was a bit odd this time around as the choice that Yagi made was kinda...odd. The Ophelia character is a bit odd and a bit out of place in the organisation that is supposed to pride itself in order and the Claymores following them, but she does make a good villain. Ilena was an interesting call back and her comments were warranted and emotionally resonating. This book needs to slow down a bit or start to give us more concrete ideas behind the organisation and the powers cause it’s piling on a lot of shakey rules for the Yoma powers recently and it needs to get it in order.Onward to the next book!
