Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming

1991Roger Zelazny

3.7/5

Yes, you see it right: it is a book written by Roger Zelazny and I gave it just one star. As to the plot it was so bad I just shamelessly copied a sentence from the book blurb: "Azzy Elbub, demon, has his sights set on the Millenial Evil Deeds Award, given to the being whose acts do the most toward reshaping the world." The less is said about it the better.Roger Zelazny is a Master of sci-fi and fantasy (with a capital M). If you have not read anything from him - run, do not walk to the nearest library and grab Lord of Light and The Great Book of Amber as well as anything else he wrote. Robert Sheckley might not be as well-known, but he wrote funniest sci-fi fiction in the genre. I advise going to Project Gutenberg and checking out his short stories, most notably One Man's Poison and Bad Medicine. A word of warning: you might laugh till it hurts while reading them. So these two collaborated on a fantasy series. I was very excited to find this book and was ready for my mind to be blown away. It was - by the fact how bad it was. A boring story (coming from Zelazny - no less), pathetic attempts at humor (coming from Sheckley - no less), two-dimensional stale characters - need I go on?I would be the first one to admit I am being too harsh here. This book is worth 2 stars by my own rating standards. The reason for the lowest rating is that any single work these guys wrote by themselves is miles ahead of this sorry excuse for a book. They themselves set the plank so high I was sure they were incapable of writing bad books. Boy was I wrong! In case you are wondering whether the next book of the series is better: I could not finish it and have no desire to do so.
