Bark, George

1999Jules Feiffer

1.3/5

I occasionally find myself reading children's books to large gatherings of toddlers, moms and nannies. Life is odd, no? Madly trying to find something I had not read a hundred times before, I tried out this one and it was a smash hit. It is fairly short, so if you are doing a story time you might want to save it for near the end, when their little toddler attention spans have gotten to the "I'm gonna go crazy now, and throw these goldfish snacks around" stage. I recommend, as always, using silly voices. The story is, at first, familiar - even to a two-year-old. It's basically the old this animal does not make that sound gag that kids never seem to get tired of. Ah, but there's a catch! A trip to the vet's reveals why our eponymous canine hero has been mooing and clucking! If that were not enough to tickle the funny bones of the tiny tykes, well then there is a joke ending that will distract the little goldfish-snack-chuckers for a few seconds. And really, what more can you ask for?
