And then read the specialized monographs on individual figures. Burnet's book, Early Greek Philosophy, is absolutely brilliant, but is completely wrong on almost everything - but it is the sort of brilliance that makes it a book that is worth not just reading, but studying. Guthrie's two volumes (I &amp; II) in his History of Greek Philosophy that are dedicated to the Presocratics are useful in that they summarize much bibliography and often states the status questionis of a problem in clear terms (and they are very readable) - but Guthrie was himself a fool and missed a lot of what, after Cherniss and Heidel, should have been obvious.One fabulous monograph that very few will have heard of is J.W. Resistance to Civil Government, called Civil Disobedience for short, is an essay by American transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau that was first published in 1849. In it, Thoreau argues that individuals should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican–American War (1846–1848).In 1848, Thoreau gave lectures at the Concord Lyceum entitled "The Rights and Duties of the Individual in relation to Government". This formed the basis for his essay, which was first published under the title Resistance to Civil Government in an 1849 anthology by Elizabeth Peabody called Æsthetic Papers. The latter title distinguished Thoreau's program from that of the "non-resistants" (anarcho-pacifists) who were expressing similar views. Resistance also served as part of Thoreau's metaphor comparing the government to a machine: when the machine was producing injustice, it was the duty of conscientious citizens to be "a counter friction" (i.e., a resistance) "to stop the machine".

I'd only read two non-fiction novels, yet. And those two are included in my favorites! Apparently, One Child, is one of them. This was the only book yet that I'd read in just one sitting. I couldn't stop reading it! Torey Hayden was amazing! She made me care for all the characters. And Sheila! The amazing girl that made me ashamed of my existence. Oops, sorry. I was just so amazed by how strong this girl was. My God, for a six year old, those difficulties were too much. Even I doubt if I could get through those as Sheila did. Thanks to Torey's amazing writing. It felt like I didn't want this book to end. I wanted to know what happens next to Sheila. What happens to the other children. I felt so attached to them that reaching the end of the book felt as heartbreaking as reading about Sheila's life awful experiences.A great book. Great characters. Great and golden-hearted author! A great experience that I might not had if I hadn't read this book. So much thanks to Ms. Torey Hayden.

The Future Lied To UsA reminiscence, rather than a memoir, tumbling between the time before war, eleven years of brutal fighting, and then its aftermath. Shifting from first to third person, with the occasional second person letter, the story is as unstructured as the lives involved. And none of it is politically correct: “No. The ones who loved war were not the young men, but the others like the politicians, middle-aged men with fat bellies and short legs. Not the ordinary people. The recent years of war had brought enough suffering and pain to last them a thousand years.”At its simplest, this story is the universal one of the common soldier: an inexperienced young man dislocated from a normal life, and exposed to the horror of having to kill and watching others killed, seemingly endlessly. He could feel happy that his soul would find solace in the fountain of sentiments from his youth. He returned time and time again to his love, his friendship, his comradeship, those human bonds which had all helped us overcome the thousand sufferings of the war.” Memory had become more than sorrow; it also carried the joy of his youth - for the reader of his life if not for him. The future had lied but it did not destroy the past - for the reader who is in the present. The Music of South Korea has evolved over the course of the decades since the end of the Korean War, and has its roots in the music of the Korean people, who have inhabited the Korean peninsula for over a millennium. Contemporary South Korean music can be divided into three different main categories: Traditional Korean folk music, popular music, or K-pop, and Western-influenced non-popular music.Korean traditional music is also known as Kugak (national music). The first evidence of Korean music appeared in the extant text of Samguk sagi (History of the three kingdoms) in 1145, which described two string-like instruments; Kayagum and Komun’go. Traditional Korean music was brought to heights of excellence under the Lee kings of the Joseon Dynasty (Chosun Dynasty) between 1392-1897. During the Chosun Dynasty, a social hierarchy was observed with the King and the Yangban (government officials, generals, and the elite) at the top and the Sangmin (merchants, craftsman) and slaves at the bottom. There were two forms of music: Jeongak (“orthodox music”) and Minsokak (“people’s music”). Jeongak was the music category that the Yangban listened to for enjoyment and was played during state rituals like banquets, military processions, etc. Jeongak was considered as aristocratic music. However, Minsokak or Nongak (farmer’s music) dominated among the common people. The different types of people’s music were: Pansori, Pungmul (Samul) Nori, and Minyo (folk song). Pansori became definite in the seventeenth century and gained respect over time. It is now considered as the ideal traditional music in Contemporary South Korea. Pansori requires a solo singer as well as a percussionist. This type of music contains body language, emotions, and sounds observed in nature. Pungmul Nori is the traditional Korean Percussion music with the sound of drums standing out. As for Minyo, it was enjoyed by commoners while Nongak was played during agrarian festivals. Folk songs were not specific; as in, the features varied among different regions. The most famous folk song of South (and North) Korea is “Arirang”. The popularity of this song sky-rocketed after it was sung solo at the screening of a silent nationalistic film produced by Na Un’gyu in 1926. There are several regional variations of this song.
