Little Bear’s Trousers by Jane HisseyOne morning, Little Bear wakes to find his trousers missing, so he goes from one stuffed-animal friend to another in search of them. Each time, he's one step behind, finding that his trousers has been used and passed along to different toys. Sailor tried them as sails for his boat, Rabbit as a hat etc. Finally, Little Bear finds his trousers from Bramwell Brown, who has converted them to an icing bag to decorate the cake he's baked. All share the cake in celebration of the trousers' return. This is a playful extension of the imaginative game of taking an object and finding various uses for it. It's an idea that works better visually than it does in words, and the pictures used in the book are both very visual and beautiful. Those are real toys on the page but at the same time they look quite capable of moving and talking. It's just the visual representation of the life that small children can breathe into their toys and it appeals to their imagination. The illustrations are the strength of the book; the text repeats information found in them. I would recommend using this book in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One as it has that toy like appeal for the children. But children of Key Stage Two are capable if reading it. I even had one child in my last placement who gave it to me every day during reading cause he found out it was my favourite book. But I also learned the appeal for him was in the images rather than the text as the pictures do seem like they come alive. The book can be used in a discussion of what can we reuse either at home or in school and possibly look at recycling as a topic. I’m sure a great D&amp;T lesson would follow where children can find one item to reuse as something else!!

Jacqueline Wilson has written many amazing books, but Dustbin Baby has to be one of my favourites, especially for an older reader, and is a story I will never forget.April, the main character, is a lonely girl with a vivid imagination who struggles to fit in as she is haunted by her past. Without so much as a note or shawl, April was abandoned by her mother at birth and dumped in a nearby dustbin. Luckily, her constant cries (which later gained her one of her nicknames April Showers) was heard by the local pizza boy, Frankie, who saved her life.The reader is introduced to April on her 14th birthday, which happens to be on April 1st (hence she adopted the nickname April Fools). For her birthday she receives a pair of earrings from her old-fashioned foster mother Marion - not quite the present April had wished for. Still without a mobile phone, unlike her friends, April and Marion have a dispute and April storms out and sets off on a journey to meet her previous foster parents in order to discover more about her childhood.April didn’t always have a great upbringing, being moved from home to home and relationships never seemed to last. Memphis-based FedEx operations executive Chuck Noland and grad student Kelly Frears have long dated and lived together, and despite each being the love of the other's life, have not gotten married because of their respective busy schedules, especially Chuck's as he is more often on business trips than he is at home. That marital status changes when on Christmas Day 1995 as Chuck is rushing off to catch yet another FedEx plane for a business trip, he gives Kelly a ring. That flight experiences technical difficulties, and goes down somewhere in the south Pacific. In a life raft, a relatively unharmed Chuck washes up on shore what he will learn is a deserted island, he unaware what has happened to any of his fellow flight mates, or the plane. However several of the packages on board for delivery do wash up on shore with him, those packages which he initially treats with respect. Chuck realizes that his priority is survival - which primarily means food, water, shelter and fire - and rescue. But survival is also in an emotional sense. To fulfill that emotional need, he has an heirloom pocket watch with Kelly's photo that she gave him as a Christmas present, and eventually opening the FedEx packages, a Wilson volleyball on which he paints a face and which he names Wilson. As time progresses, Chuck goes through a range of emotions, but if rescue is ever in the cards, he realizes that he has to find a way to get off the island, which is seemingly impossible in his circumstance due to the strong on shore surf he cannot get beyond without assistance. What Chuck may not fully realize is the longer he is not rescued, the harder it will be for him to return to his old life in its entirety if he ever is rescued. Although the thought of Kelly is what largely keeps him motivated to be rescued, Kelly, who probably believes him to be dead, may have moved on emotionally from him in the intervening time.

To make money, rather than getting traditional after school jobs, they form an after-school babysitting business that leads them into a series of comical adventures. Also involved in their lives are Dice, their next door neighbor, who is notorious for aiding people for money, Cat's cheerful and supportive grandmother, Nona, who decided to move into "Elderly Acres", which is a home for the aged, and Goomer, a dim-witted professional MMA fighter whom Dice manages.

One night, 14-year-old Madoka Kaname has a terrible nightmare - against the backdrop of a devastated city, she witnesses a girl fight a losing battle against a dreadful being lingering above, while a cat-like magical creature tells Madoka the only way to change that tragic outcome is for her to make a contract with him and become a magical girl. But when later on she and her best friend Sayaka encounter the same cat-like magical creature from her dream - who introduces himself as Kyubey - the pair discovers that magical girls are real, and what's more, they can choose to become one. All they must do is sign a contract with Kyubey and agree to take on the duty to fight abstract beings called 'witches' that spread despair to the human world, and in return, each one of them will be granted any single wish they desire. However, as Homura's omen suggests, there might be far more to becoming a magical girl than Madoka and Sayaka realize.

Although this anime starts out with a very clear goal and storyline, as it develops, things just aren't what they seem anymore.
