My husband is coming up for a short visit soon and I have ordered three more volumes of Astro Boy for his collectio. And of course I get to read them first!This is Volume 1, where in The Birth Of Astro Boy we learn how Astro Boy was created, although we don't learn why his eventual 'father' decided to put machine guns in his butt. The searchlight eyes are easier to understand, but those butt guns, those things are just weird. Anyway, the main story in this book is called The Hot Dog Corps and involves a gang of cyborg dogs that were turned into killer robots that look like people and don't remember they were once dogs. Or do they? How far does Astro Boy have to go to make them heel? The third and very short tale is called Plant People. Astro Boy and his friends are on a ski holiday when they stumble across a lovely flower growing in the snow and Astro Boy has to keep them from pulling it up out of the ground. What is his story?The print in this book was pretty tiny, and I imagine the next two books will be just as small but I will struggle along anyway because I have become rather fond of Astro Boy, and I can't wait to see where he aims those butt guns next!

The original 3 issues of The Goon before the title was picked up by Dark Horse and became the sensation it is today. Powell complains about the art but it looks as great here as later issues. I like the black and white version of Powell's art unobscured by color. All of the Goon's world building begins in these self-published issues. The Zombie Priest, Lobrazio, Fishy Pete, Merle the Werewolf, Franky's "Knife to the Eye", it all begins here. I love the deranged, off-kilter feel to Powell's world building.

Max Renn is the President of Channel 83 Civic-TV, a small television station on the UHF dial. Behind closed doors in specific company, he would admit that he enjoys such programming, but as President will stay away from associated activities that may be dangerous for him in its purchase. His current girlfriend, radio personality Nicki Brand, who he met on a television talk show, is sexually aroused by light mutilation on her person, that despite or because her radio show is like an open air crisis hotline. On that same talk show, the other guest via video feed was Professor Brian O'Blivion - solely his stage name - who believes that television and video broadcasts will one day overtake the world as reality, which may make Max's programming in combination more dangerous. In Max's search for the next big thing in like programming already on Channel 83, Harlan, his pirater who scans satellite signals, illegally obtains a satellite feed of something called Videodrome, which depicts continual sexualized torture and murder with no storyline of which to speak. The background behind Videodrome is unknown, but believing it is that big thing for which he is looking, Max is determined to find the producers so that he can purchase it for his station. He is concerned for Nicki if she goes ahead against his warnings in wanting to appear on Videodrome, however it does not lessen his desire to purchase it. If Max in turn does not heed the warning of Masha, one of his long time show suppliers, based on what little she discovers about it, Max may discover that Videodrome is just the next but destructive step in O'Blivion's prognostication.
