At the Earth's Core by Edgar Rice Burroughs Cutting through the earth in an extraordinary burrowing device, David Innes and Abner Perry fear they may be incinerated in the planet's fiery core. There in an eerie, subterranean realm of vast oceans, lush jungles, and eternal noon, they encounter primitive humans and their beautiful, courageous queen, Dian.

After ten years of absence John Carter finally managed to return to Mars. Unfortunately he could not choose where he ended up. Thus instead of familiar territories he arrived at the place where sentient Martians go when they grow tired of life. Very soon our hero realized the place is not exactly Tolkien's Uttermost West; far from it. On the positive side he got to meet his friend and a great warrior - the latter was very important for their survival. Survival was what John Carter was busy with through the whole book. I can count the number of pages where nobody threatened his life on one hand. Other reviewers say that the second book is better than the first. I agree. I found the whole idea of inhabitants of the land where people go for the last pilgrimage having their own place of ultimate pilgrimage in turn fascinating. Action was practically non-stop. My only complaint was about John Carter's mental abilities: he was not exactly a great scientist material. It was not obvious in the first book, bu here it is hard to miss. If you manage to look past action scenes you will be able to find some criticism of religion, anti-racial and anti-slavery themes. These might seem mild, but keep in mind when the book was written: that year my older grandmother was still learning how to walk and talk. I mentioned in the review of the first book the series created its own genre: sword and planet. This book also contains most probably the first ever epic air battle between flying battleships - something countless people wrote about countless number of times since then. Is it high literature? Not at all. Is it a great character study? Nope. Is it fun read? You bet it is! 4 well-deserved stars.

Her queenly head was poised haughtily upon her smooth red shoulders. Her dark eyes looked angrily into those of the man.

On the plus side? Dejah Thoris gets to kick some a%&amp;, she’s not just a bauble that people keep stealing from John Carter. [Of course, she still gets kidnapped. A lot. Nevertheless, she’s often instrumental in her escapes, and give her a sword or a radium pistol and she gives as good as she gets.]On the down side, the stories tend to drag like a B-movie where the director has no sense for pacing, and they still suffer from ERB’s penchant for lazy writing – aka “John Carter’s dumb luck.”I shouldn’t pine for the days when I was stupid, but I wish that I could continue to enjoy some of my childhood favorites without being gob smacked with their racism and sexism today. You lost me on this one when John Carter reminisces about the “good old days” before the war and imagines taking Dejah Thoris to a plantation ball. Then, later in the story arc, he credits his guerilla warfare skills to those honorable Southern gentlemen Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the first KKK, and J.E.B. Stuart.Two stars – not recommended unless, like me, Barsoom played a big role in getting you interested in SF and you can still extract some pleasure in going back to the Red Planet. This series introduced me to ERB and eventually led me to read my first John Carter novel, The Gods of Mars.If we don’t want Barsoom to become a forgotten bit of American pulp literature remembered only by academics, we need to reimagine John Carter for a modern audience since a former Confederate officer obsessed with race, who confronts most obstacles with violence, and is – let’s face it – dumb as a rock, is no hero. (view spoiler)[[Fortunately, my perfervid imagination has tackled the problem much to my satisfaction, though I have no plans to publish any of this fanfic.] (hide spoiler)]

Probably more like a 4.5 or 4.75 . . .For this volume we're back to first-person narration, but it's not John Carter -- it's Ulysses Paxton, another Earth man who makes his way to Barsoom from the trenches of WWI-era Europe. Paxton already has a basic familiarity with Barsoom because he's read ERB's previous books, although he thought they were fiction. (Burroughs was meta before meta was a thing.)This is an interesting installment -- it has much more of a science fictional feel to it than other volumes (well, a 1920's SF feel), what with elaborate medical procedures up to and including brain transplants. There's also relatively little swordplay. As always, though, there's more adventure, intrigue, and True Love at First Sight than you can shake a stick at.

"Swords of Mars" is the eighth book in the Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian series. It was featured in six issues of the "Blue Book" magazine in 1934-1935. John Carter reprises his role of hero as he vows to bring an end to the Assassins Guild. He must travel to one of the moons of Barsoom, Carter then creates a race of secret super assassins to destroy this powerful Guild of Assassins. He ventures to the city of Zedong in a fierce attempt to overthrow Ur Jan the leader pf the Assassins. There are many fantastic characters and galaxies in this compelling spy story in this edge of your seat science thriller.

Edgar Rice Burroughs had this problem in all of his series: After a while, the quality of the books would start to slip -- maybe he was getting bored or maybe he'd just start repeating himself. Arguably, this is where the Mars series begins its downhill slide (which means that, percentage-wise, John Carter has less dross than the other major series -- Tarzan, Venus and Pellucidar).This book is again narrated from the perspective of a native Barsoomian, Vor Daj, who accompanies John Carter on one of his adventures. Carter plays a fairly minor role in the book, really, and is off-stage for much of it; otherwise he'd probably overshadow Vor Daj. Ras Thavas, the Master Mind of Mars also returns, so this book again has some science fictional elements -- brain transplants and artificial life and the like. Naturally there's a beautiful woman; naturally Our Hero falls for her; naturally, the Fates conspire to make things as difficult as possible for them until the end.This isn't so much an actively bad book as it is somewhat tired and occasionally silly. I wouldn't say it should be avoided, but I wouldn't say it needs to be sought out unless you absolutely, positively have to read more Barsoomian adventures. (For which I wouldn't blame you -- I've certainly read the book many times over the years.)
