“The world is my idea:” And so with these words Schopenhauer begins his magnum opus with one of the most provocative opening lines in all of literature. He continues, “a truth which holds good for every thing that lives and knows,… [Man] knows not a sun, and not an earth, but only an eye that sees a sun, a hand that feels an earth; that the world which surrounds him exists only as idea–that is, only in relation to something else, the one who conceives the idea, which is himself.”The whole of Schopenhauer’s philosophy is contained in these lines. The book that follows works to undo the assumptions the reader brings to them–primarily those surrounding “himself”. Read:“We never know it [the subject], but wherever anything is known, it is the knower.”“however immeasurable and massive this world may be, its existence hangs nonetheless by a single thread: that is, the actual consciousness in which it exists.”“The world’s existence is irrevocably subject to this condition, and this brands it, in spite of all empirical reality, with the stamp of ideality and therefore of mere phenomenal appearance. As a result, the world must be recognized, at least from this aspect, as akin to dreaming,”“inference from sensation to its cause which, as I have repeatedly pointed out, lies at the foundation of all sense perception, is certainly sufficient to signal for us the empirical presence in space and time of an empirical object, and is therefore quite enough for the practical purposes of life; but it is by no means sufficient to afford us any conclusion as to the existence and real nature, or rather as to the intelligible substratum, of the phenomena which in this way arise for us.”Just as I’ve already suggested, so Schopenhauer himself reiterates throughout: “There is, indeed, just one thought which forms the content of this whole work.” And indeed this is just as much the case as it is the crux. The very pervasive difficulty is in trying to understand something that is impossible to understand from the way we are conditioned to know the world–which is under the forms of time and space. For Schopenhauer’s will lies outside of time and space, outside of cause and effect, outside of change and fate–all of which is mostly impossibly for us to completely comprehend.Hence accusations of contradictions. But of course Schopenhauer presupposes such, and, just as he, through this work, fixates his reader in an exercise of understanding something that is near-impossible to understand, he also reconciles not only his own seeming contradictions but more ubiquitous ones such as that between fate and free-will. And this–you may have guessed–he does by incessantly hashing out the relationship between will and idea. In a very generalized nutshell such reconciliations are an insistence that certain dualisms are the same thing looked at from different perspectives. –The will is infinite, timeless, spaceless, absolute, free. It is the eternal all-knowing knower.–Idea, being the manifestation of the will, is also infinite and yet exists only temporally, spacially; it exists only in condition, and is completely fated. Inside of it, each of us is only the will itself inside of time and space–i.e. the will seeing itself from a limited perspective, which, for being limited, draws it/us into the delusion of individuation or plurality.“in the case of such beings as have knowledge,…the individual is the support of the knowing subject, and the knowing subject is the support of the world.”The mystery in this equation can be somewhat lightened by ruminating on the concept of infinity or as Schopenhauer puts it:“life has infinite time and infinite space to erase the distinction between the possible and the actual,”Likewise, Schopenhauer’s uncanny sensitivity allows him to shed light on the foundations of human error:“It is an error great as it is common that the most frequent, most universal and simplest phenomena are those that we best understand;”He very elegantly and succinctly sums up man’s tragic penchant to assume and forget:“Men quietly resign themselves to starting from mere qualitates occultae which they had given up trying to elucidate because they intended to build on them, not excavate beneath them.”In all my limited investigation, I’ve never found a more compelling account of the cosmos. I sympathize with Borges’ regret and joy in the fact that he wouldn’t ever write an account of his worldview because Schopenhauer had already done it for him. Although it should be said that the fact that much of what Schopenhauer himself said had long existed in eastern metaphysics–primarily Buddhist and Hinduist–didn’t suffice to prevent him from writing his. And so we are the benefactors of this stubbornness. For, a large part of the thrill is to have both the rigor of a western style delineation and the–at least partial–validation that is the historic force of an ancient spiritual practice. This is not to say that the equating of any kind of western philosophy with an eastern spiritual tradition–or vice versa–proves its truth, but for those who recognize for themselves an experiential, non-dogmatic truth in one or another, it is rather exhilarating to jump over onto a parallel wire and see this truth from a different and uniquely established perspective.“If we lose ourselves in contemplation of the infinite greatness of the universe in space and time, meditate on the the millennia of years that have passed and are yet to come, or if the night-sky actually brings before our eyes countless worlds, and so forces upon our consciousness the immensity of the universe, we feel ourselves reduced to nothing; as individuals, as bodies vitalised, as transient phenomena of will, we feel ourselves like drops in the ocean, dwindle and disperse into the void. But against this spectre of our own futility, against such mendacious impossibility, there rises up at once the immediate consciousness that all these worlds exist only in our ideation, only as modifications of the eternal subject of pure knowing, which we find ourselves to be as soon as we forget our individuality, and which is the necessary support of all worlds and all eras, and the condition of their existence. The vastness of the world which previously troubled us, now rests in us; our dependence on it is cancelled by its dependence on us.”A brief note on this particular book (Everyman): - It’s abridged. I never thought I’d read an abridged book much less defend one. Now that I’ve done the former–having been tricked in part by the fact that its abridgement goes slyly unmentioned on any part of the book’s exterior–I will do the latter. According to the editor, the hundreds of pages of lanced-off prose is mostly “digressions in which Schopenhauer excoriates his philosophical opponents.” Though I’m one who finds these excoriations highly entertaining, I count myself fortunate in being tricked into imbibing this more concentrated version in my major introduction to Schopenhauer’s own words. Tangents and references to unfamiliar thought, however entertaining, would have only weakened the understanding I ultimately gained. - Translation. You’ll notice other Schopenhauer books titled, The World as Will and Representation, and The World as Will and Presentation, and perhaps wonder whether he is making some rather fine distinction each by writing an entire separate book. Worry not (Or should I say, ‘worry’?); these are merely translations of the same. I don’t necessarily have a pony in this race, yet–I plan to read them all–but I’ll say that the translator makes some very strong and salient points for the case of ‘idea’, most notably the hard-to-argue-with point that Schopenhauer himself, when translating Kant into English, used ‘idea’ for the German Vorstellung.

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher best known for his work The World as Will and Representation. He responded to and expanded upon Immanuel Kant's philosophy concerning the way in which we experience the world. His critique of Kant, his creative solutions to the problems of human experience and his explication of the limits of human knowledge are among his most important achievements. His metaphysical theory is the foundation of his influential writings on psychology, aesthetics, ethics, and politics which influenced Friedrich Nietzsche, Wagner, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Sigmund Freud and others. He said he was influenced by the Upanishads, Immanuel Kant, and Plato. References to Eastern philosophy and religion appear frequently in his writing. He appreciated the teachings of the Buddha and even called himself a Buddhaist. He said that his philosophy could not have been conceived before these teachings were available. He called himself a Kantian. He formulated a pessimistic philosophy that gained importance and support after the failure of the German and Austrian revolutions of 1848.

One of the founders of existentialism, the eminent philosopher Karl Jaspers here presents for the general reader an introduction to philosophy. "I am neither a theologian, nor a scholar learned in the history of religions, nor an anthropologist. Psychology is the only branch of learning in which I am particularly versed. To the psychologist the religious propensities of man must be at least as interesting as any other of the facts pertaining to his mental constitution. It would seem, therefore, as a psychologist, the natural thing for me would be to invite you to a descriptive survey of those religious propensities."  When William James went to the University of Edinburgh in 1901 to deliver a series of lectures on "natural religion," he defined religion as "the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men in their solitude, so far as they apprehend themselves to stand in relation to whatever they may consider the divine." Considering religion, then, not as it is defined by--or takes place in--the churches, but as it is felt in everyday life, he undertook a project that, upon completion, stands not only as one of the most important texts on psychology ever written, not only as a vitally serious contemplation of spirituality, but for many critics one of the best works of nonfiction written in the 20th century. Reading The Varieties of Religious Experience, it is easy to see why. Applying his analytic clarity to religious accounts from a variety of sources, James elaborates a pluralistic framework in which "the divine can mean no single quality, it must mean a group of qualities, by being champions of which in alternation, different men may all find worthy missions." It's an intellectual call for serious religious tolerance--indeed, respect--the vitality of which has not diminished through the subsequent decades.

I first started reading this book because I want answers to the existential angst that plagues me and others aware of the implications of post-modern ideas. I don’t mean to say that I wanted an alternative to post-modernism; I don’t believe that is any more realistic than saying that I want an alternative to turning 32, for that’s just wishful thinking. I’m not a post-modernist, for I am not merely a product of my culture, but I am influenced by my culture. If I’m being honest with myself, there is simply no escaping thinking in part like a post-modernist, for I am steeped in a post-modern era of thought and practice. It doesn’t help to revert to modernist ‘fact-finding’ when immersed in a society that is exploring the cognitive foundation of what we call objective reality—but people attempt this regressive tactic nonetheless because it’s a familiar place. But the past is dead and done; it is worn into a deep rut, and a new path must be found. We must confess, though disheartened, that facts don’t find nearly as much as they don’t find. Enter post-modernism.Tillich starts by differentiating between fear and anxiety. Fear is a manifestation of universal, existential anxiety; and as a leaf and not a root, fear can be more directly dealt with than anxiety. The individual fears are embodiments that can be avoided, resisted, opposed and even eliminated—while the root of fear—anxiety—is really the ever-present awareness of non-being that constantly hovers. This anxiety cannot be removed, and is a necessary part of self-preservation (“self-affirmation”) which adds to one’s valuation of life. This principle of ineradicable anxiety is one of most difficult parts of this book to make peace with (didn’t I start reading to do exactly that…decrease anxiety?). But Tillich reveals that just as torture can be accepted at the hand of a trusted physician, so existential anxiety can be courageously endured because of a deeper realization that affirms one’s sense of purpose and identity. This truth is revealed in the last quarter of the book.There are three basic forms of anxiety: anxiety about death (“non-being”—which ultimately subsumes the other two), anxiety about meaninglessness (an empty life), and condemnation (guilt about a wrong life). One can deal practically with fears, but anxiety (no matter which sort) must ultimately be accepted into one’s ultimate sense of self-worth and one’s right to BE (again, “self-affirmation). This is what the author refers to as ‘taking it [fears, doubts, anxiety] into oneself’. In spite of anxiety, one can still do what must be done, and can remain confident that God is still holding them. This is the confidence of Being—COURAGE—that gives one the strength to stare down non-being in its many forms.This courage, however, does not always come easy, nor or is always immediately apparent when it does arrive. Courage can be partly obstructed by one’s lack of realization that confidence in one’s own being can take place only as an ancillary to the deeper confidence in what Tillich calls “being-itself”, viz. God. Pre-mature courage often evidences itself as ‘courage to be as a part’ [collectivism], or ‘courage to be as oneself’ [individualistic existentialism]; the former missing out on a belief in self, the later missing out on a belief in the world.I can certainly say that I comprehend our existential predicament a bit more clearly after reading this book. Never have I read a work that so faithfully scrutinized our ontology as if it were under a microscope, but did not abandon the soul under the microscope to wriggle and die. In the words of the psychologist Carl Jung, our author has stood and stared into face of the monster of the maternal abyss, and has not been mesmerized by its power, but has overcome. This understanding of the source of our anxiety and fear can help bring a renewed determination to renew the fight, and to be hopeful and courageous even when all hope seems lost. It brings new meaning to the idea that while one is alive, there is still confidence to believe that one is ‘meant’ to be alive. In the words of Robert Browning, “This world’s no blot for us nor blank; it means intensely, and means good. And to find its meaning is my meat and drink.”

He believes that the US housing market is built on a bubble that will burst within the next few years. Autonomy within the company allows Burry to do largely as he pleases, so Burry proceeds to bet against the housing market with the banks, who are more than happy to accept his proposal for something that has never happened in American history. The banks believe that Burry is a crackpot and therefore are confident in that they will win the deal. Jared Vennett with Deutschebank gets wind of what Burry is doing and, as an investor believes he too can cash in on Burry's beliefs. An errant telephone call to FrontPoint Partners gets this information into the hands of Mark Baum, an idealist who is fed up with the corruption in the financial industry. Baum and his associates, who work at an arms length under Morgan Stanley, decide to join forces with Vennett despite not totally trusting him. In addition to Burry's information, they further believe that most of the mortgages are overrated by the bond agencies, with the banks collating all the sub-prime mortgages under AAA packages. Charlie Geller and Jamie Shipley, who are minor players in a $30 million start-up garage company called Brownfield, get a hold of Vennett's prospectus on the matter. Wanting in on the action but not having the official clout to play, they decide to call an old "friend", retired investment banker Ben Rickert, to help out. All three of these groups work on the premise that the banks are stupid and don't know what's going on, while for them to win, the general economy has to lose, which means the suffering of the general investor who trusts the financial institutions. That latter aspect may not sit well with Baum. Some of these assumptions may be incorrect and may be far more manipulative than they could have ever imagined, which in turn may throw curves into the process.

In 1930s Italy, a carefree Jewish waiter named Guido starts a fairy tale life by courting and marrying a lovely woman from a nearby city. Guido and his wife have a son and live happily together until the occupation of Italy by German forces. In an attempt to hold his family together and help his son survive the horrors of a Jewish Concentration Camp, Guido imagines that the Holocaust is a game and that the grand prize for winning is a tank.

On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams (nee Fuller) is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy's lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin's diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being diagnosed with several aging diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.

84 years later, a 100 year-old woman named Rose DeWitt Bukater tells the story to her granddaughter Lizzy Calvert, Brock Lovett, Lewis Bodine, Bobby Buell and Anatoly Mikailavich on the Keldysh about her life set in April 10th 1912, on a ship called Titanic when young Rose boards the departing ship with the upper-class passengers and her mother, Ruth DeWitt Bukater, and her fiancé, Caledon Hockley. Meanwhile, a drifter and artist named Jack Dawson and his best friend Fabrizio De Rossi win third-class tickets to the ship in a game. And she explains the whole story from departure until the death of Titanic on its first and last voyage April 15th, 1912 at 2:20 in the morning.

McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. McMurphy and the other inmates band together to make a rebellious stance against the atrocious Nurse.

This infatuation coincides with the Fittses moving in next door: homophobic disciplinarian US Marine Colonel Frank Fitts who rules the house with a military fist (that fist being both figurative and literal), his semi-comatose wife Barbara Fitts, and their bright and quietly subversive 18-year-old son Ricky Fitts, who openly abides by his father's rules while behind the scenes lives by his own quite different perspective. Much like Lester's infatuation, Ricky immediately becomes infatuated with Jane; he considers girls like Angela as ordinary. The entry of Angela and the Fittses into the Burnhams' lives ultimately leads to each of the players confronting what is truly in his or her heart.
