As director Gus Van Sant observes in the introduction to Matt Damon's and Ben Affleck's screenplay Good Will Hunting, the two young actors somewhat resemble the characters they play in the film: they're best friends, and Affleck (who plays Chuckie) habitually chauffeurs Damon (Will), who doesn't drive. Van Sant says we can see how badly Damon drives by watching the film's last scene, in which he is actually driving the car with the camera mounted on it. But Damon and company write better than he drives; this script contains some of the boldest, best monologues since Pulp Fiction.Van Sant and cast member Robin Williams helped the young actors tame the tigers in their cranial tanks, trimming the script into a precision instrument. Though the stills from the film are not perfectly matched to their places in the script, this story remains as much a joy to read as it is towatch on the big screen.

4 stars. This was awesome. The Matrix trilogy are some of my all time favorite films so to find this screenplay was pretty cool. It's such an innovative and iconic sci-fi series and it's impossible to deny it's impact. The Wachowski's completely changed the game with these films and the way stories can be told and it's such a cool concept. The characters are fantastic and the action scenes are badass. The screenplay is definitely a fun experience if you are a fan of the films and I had a lot of fun reading it. If I can find the screenplays for the next two I will definitely read those as well.

Who hasn't ever dreamed of meeting a movie star, falling in love, and discovering the feelings are mutual? Richard Curtis's Notting Hill is a funny, enchanting, lighthearted take on just such a fairy-tale premise. Curtis's screenplay of the film--which stars Hugh Grant as an ordinary British bookstore owner and Julia Roberts as the world-famous actress who waltzes into his store and his life--makes for an effective and enjoyable read, chock full of the snappy, witty dialogue that made Curtis's Four Weddings and a Funeral such a hit. Fans of the movie will be pleased to relive such moments as Roberts's and Grant's first embarrassing meetings and her appearance at a small dinner party for Grant's sister, where she turns the situation upside-down. On the page, the story is charming if a bit slight (it doesn't feature a rowdy and riotous supporting cast á la Four Weddings), but as wish fulfillment and romantic comedy, it's irresistible and will leave a smile on your face to rival that of our heroine. In addition to the finished script, the book includes scenes that didn't make the final cut (great ones, too--it's too bad they won't be seen); loads of color stills from the movie; an engaging introduction by Curtis detailing the genesis of the film; and an affable if offbeat afterword from Hugh Grant himself. For years I avoided Shakespeare in Love, mostly because I find Gwyneth Paltrow insufferable. I finally watched the film earlier this year, and over a decade after everyone else, I get why this film was such a big deal. It's beautiful and smart and funny and all of the best of what Hollywood aspires to be. Heck, the film is so good it even balances out the insufferability that is the Paltrow. This might be the best I’ve ever seen her (although she didn’t deserve an Academy Award, and Fiennes and Firth were robbed for not even getting nominations, but I digress).Given how much goes on within the film – and the layers within the dialogue – I decided to read the script. And I wasn’t disappointed. It’s lovely. Beyond lovely. Reading Shakespeare in Love allowed me to focus entirely on the words, on the complex turns of phrases and the nimble asides – and it’s simply beautiful. The costumes, the acting, and the cinematography - all of those breathe life in the film. But the script is, on its own, a wonderful, brilliant piece of literature worthy of attention. Highly recommended.

I can't even express my love for this story. This is the novelization of one of my favourite movies 'Mona Lisa Smile'. I love it to bits. Sometimes movie-to-novel adaptions can be quite predictable or boring - but this certainly wasn't. Not only because I love these characters and this story so much; but also because they included alot of information, scenes and thoughts that weren't in the movie. I love personality of the main characters. They're so amazing. I love the progressive ideals and views on art. The struggle in the traditions and expectations for women of that time. The need to pave your own path and do that the way you want it. Choose the life that makes you happy even though others may not agree or society may not agree of you and your life. It's a truly inspiring story. I also especially love the setting in that era and the teacher-students setting. They learned from each other and they changed each others views. Ugh, I really cannot put into words why I think this is story is so amazing. I'm trying. I admire the strength of those women. Not only the women who took a stand against the traditions and expectations of society and the people near to them, but also the women who didn't. The world had a long way to go. It was progressive and amazing enough that women could actually get a college eduaction. Yet, even now the world still isn't equal for both men and women. I love Katherine's aspiration to change things. I love Joan's power to choose for the life that makes her happy even though it in fact fits in the tradition. I love Connie's loving heart and dreams. I love Giselle's boldness, freedom and here ability to do what she wants to do even though other people disapprove of her ways. I love Betty's strength and mind to see that if she wants to be happy she has to break free of her chains and pave the path she really wants. I especially love reading how they ended up, something that they don't show in the movie. I liked how they ended up with the succesful career or happy family they wanted. Also that Katherine is breaking down new walls in Europe, finding new inspiration. They changed each others lives and they will never forget each other. I felt so proud of the characters because they deserve the best and they're became and were such intelligent and open-minded women. I'm going to end this review still not feeling like I've fully expressed my love, but it'll have to do.

 Dances With Wolves film poster.I HAD watched Kevin Costner’s Dances With Wolves in the late ’90s and had loved it. I finally got to read Michael Blake’s novel a few days back and loved it as much. By the way, it is the first Western that I have read after the early seventies when as a schoolboy in Calcutta I loved reading those written by Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey. Much of Dances with Wolves, which won seven Academy Awards, was filmed in central and western South Dakota.  The novel starts in 1863 during the midst of the Civil War. Its hero, Lieutenant John Dunbar, requests to be posted in the Frontier as he wants to see it in its pristine glory before it all gets wiped out (by civilization or rather invading whites). Various Native American tribes could be found in this region living in tepees which were also known as wigwams. They rode unsaddled horses and hunted buffaloes and deer and caught fishes for a living. They either walked barefoot or wore moccasins which were made of the natural hide of animals, including buffaloes or bison. Each tribe had a chief, a medicine man or witch doctor and many warriors who were good at using bows and arrows, spears and daggers. Some of the tribes like the Lakota were peaceful ones while some like the Pawnee and the Apaches were war-mongers who would raid and kill other tribes for their women, food and horses. Here is what an edition of Reader’s Digest Condensed Books in which I read Dances With Wolves says about the author: “Blake’s sympathy for the period is such that he feels that he was born a hundred years too late. ‘Everything was so unspoilt in eighteen sixty-three, the year the novel is set, but I missed it all,’ says Blake. ‘By reading history I could imagine it, up to a point. By creating John Dunbar, I could actually “live” it. “Blake tried in vain in the seventies and eighties to establish himself as a film scriptwriter in Los Angeles and survived only by doing all kinds of odd jobs. By 1986 his fortunes had fallen so low that he had to live and work in his old Chrysler car. He moved to Arizona where he worked at a Chinese restaurant as a dishwasher. One year later a call from a friend, the actor Kevin Costner, turned his life around. Costner was so enthusiastic about the Dances With Wolves manuscript, which Blake had given him, that he asked for a film script based on it. Then the Oscar-winning film Dances With Wolves was born. “The book became a best seller, and a Golden Globe and Oscar for the script followed. The proceeds from Dances With Wolves enabled Blake to say farewell to his Chrysler home.” A horse called Little Boy shows a loving gesture to Michael Blake. Who says man and beast can't be the best of friends!?  Most Native American tribes gave names to people that were somehow associated with nature or by something which a tribeswoman or tribesman did or made her/him popular. The heroine of the book is called “Stands With A Fist” as she was good at attacking with her fist if tribeswomen said something negative about her. The hero Dunbar was called “Dances With Wolves” as he was once seen prancing with his pet wolf by several Comanches. For a long time I used to think that the ’70s film The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973) was about some man who loved a form of dancing called ‘Cat Dancing’. I only realised how wrong I was when I finally got to see the film in the late ’80s. Its hero Burt Reynolds, who is white, falls in love with a Native American woman called Cat Dancing, played by Sarah Miles. Hence, the film’s title The Man who loved Cat Dancing. Cat Dancing (Sarah Miles) loved by her mustachioed macho Man (Burt Reynolds). Here is an extract from Dances With Wolves which sheds some light on the Comanche culture during a wedding ceremony: “She came with her head still bowed, and Kicking Bird took her hand. He passed it to Dances With Wolves and told him to take her inside. The marriage was made as they passed through the doorway. After it was done the villagers broke up quietly and drifted back to their homes. “All afternoon the people of Ten Bears’s camp came in little groups to lay presents on the newlyweds’ doorstep, staying only long enough to drop off gifts. By sunset an impressive array of offerings was piled outside the lodge. “This beautiful community gesture went unnoticed by the new couple. On the day of their wedding they saw neither people nor their offerings. On the day of their wedding they stayed home. Here is another extract which describes in vivid detail how the white man, who considered himself to be the civilised one, went about destroying nature and the untamed American West: “They started their ponies forward and, as they did, Dances With Wolves was aware of an eerie buzzing sound. It was being made by the wing beats of uncounted thousands of feasting flies.  “Everywhere he looked the ground held bodies or pieces of bodies. There were small animals, badgers and skunks and squirrels. Most of these were intact. Some were missing their tails. They lay rotting where they had been shot, for no apparent reason other than target practice. The primary objects of the genocide were deer. A few of the bodies were whole, most were mutilated. Dull, dead eyes stared up at him from the exquisite heads that had been chopped off raggedly at the neck. In one spot the severed heads had been arranged nose to nose, as if they were having a conversation. It was supposed to be humorous.” The mention of “skunks” reminds me of an incident during a trip I made with a friends’ family from Dallas to Houston in July 1982. When his car passed on the highway near a forest, we were hit by the most obnoxious odour as if a 350 lb sumo wrestler had farted right in front of our faces. The stinking smell stayed for at least several minutes. I almost puked. It was the first, last and only time that I had experienced the body odour of a skunk. Nothing ever could be worse than that! Striped skunk sprays. In the following extract the protagonist expresses his fear of the intended invasion of the white man: “‘When Kicking Bird and I first began to talk,’ Dances With Wolves started, ‘Kicking Bird would ask, “How many white people are coming?”’ and I would say, “I don’t know. That is true I do not know how many people will come. But I can tell you this. I believe there will be a lot. The white people are many, more than any of us could ever count. If they want to make war on you, they will do it with thousands of soldiers. The soldiers will have big war guns that can shoot into a camp like ours and destroy everything in it. It makes me afraid. I cannot say what must be done. But I come from the white race and I know them now in ways I did not know them before. I’m afraid for all the Comanches.”’  This edition of the book contains several beautiful illustrations by Horst Maurmann. Pages from True West magazine pay tribute to Michael Blake. The book is highly recommended for everybody who loves reading about nature and the environment and Native American tribes and what the United States of America once was and how it has changed for the worse with the passing of time. The Piano, Jane Campion, Kate Pullinger The Piano is a 1993 New Zealand drama film about a mute piano player and her daughter, set during the mid-19th century in a rainy, muddy frontier backwater town on the west coast of New Zealand. It revolves around the musician's passion for playing the piano and her efforts to regain her piano after it is sold. The Piano was written and directed by Jane Campion and stars Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, and Anna Paquin in her first acting role. The film's score by Michael Nyman became a best-selling soundtrack album, and Hunter played her own piano pieces for the film. After a long voyage from Scotland, pianist Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) and her young daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin), are left with all their belongings, including a piano, on a New Zealand beach. Ada, who has been mute since childhood, has been sold into marriage to a local man named Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill). McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. McMurphy and the other inmates band together to make a rebellious stance against the atrocious Nurse.

After seeing his reaction and his new found perspective - she decides to devote her life to the people around her. Such as, her father who is obsessed with his garden-gnome, a failed writer, a hypochondriac, a man who stalks his ex girlfriends, the "ghost," a suppressed young soul, the love of her life and a man whose bones are as brittle as glass. But after consuming herself with these escapades - she finds out that she is disregarding her own life and damaging her quest for love. Amélie then discovers she must become more aggressive and take a hold of her life and capture the beauty of love she has always dreamed of.

20 years after the end of WWI, in which the nation of Tomainia was on the losing side, Adenoid Hynkel has risen to power as the ruthless dictator of the country. He believes in a pure Aryan state and the decimation of the Jews. This situation is unknown to a simple Jewish Tomainian barber who has been hospitalized since a WWI battle. Upon his release the barber, who had been suffering from memory loss about the war, is shown the new persecuted life of the Jews by many living in the Jewish ghetto, including a washerwoman named Hannah with whom he begins a relationship. The barber is ultimately spared such persecution by Commander Schultz, whom he saved in that WWI battle. The lives of all Jews in Tomainia are eventually spared with a policy shift by Hynkel himself, who is doing so for ulterior motives. But those motives include a desire for world domination, starting with the invasion of neighboring Osterlich, which may be threatened by Benzino Napaloni, the dictator of neighboring Bacteria. Ultimately Schultz, who has turned traitor against Hynkel's regime, and the barber may be able to join forces to take control of the situation, using Schultz's inside knowledge of the regime's workings and the barber's uncanny resemblance to one of those in power.

Gerd Wiesler is an officer with the Stasi, the East German secret police. The film begins in 1984 when Wiesler attends a play written by Georg Dreyman, who is considered by many to be the ultimate example of the loyal citizen. Wiesler has a gut feeling that Dreyman can't be as ideal as he seems, and believes surveillance is called for. The Minister of Culture agrees but only later does Wiesler learn that the Minister sees Dreyman as a rival and lusts after his partner Christa-Maria. The more time he spends listening in on them, the more he comes to care about them. The once rigid Stasi officer begins to intervene in their lives, in a positive way, protecting them whenever possible. Eventually, Wiesler's activities catch up to him and while there is no proof of wrongdoing, he finds himself in menial jobs - until the unbelievable happens.

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2005.

The film brings the audience through the changes in cinema and the dying trade of traditional film making, editing and screening. It also explores a young boy's dream of leaving his little town to foray into the world outside.

Alvy Singer, a forty year old twice divorced, neurotic, intellectual Jewish New York City stand-up comic, reflects on the demise of his latest relationship, to Annie Hall, an insecure, flighty, Midwestern WASP aspiring nightclub singer. Unlike his previous relationships, Alvy believed he may have worked out all the issues in his life through fifteen years of therapy to make this relationship with Annie last, among those issues being not wanting to date any woman that would want to date him, and thus subconsciously pushing those women away. Alvy not only reviews the many ups and many downs of their relationship, but also reviews the many facets of his makeup that led to him starting to date Annie. Those facets include growing up next to Coney Island in Brooklyn, being attracted to the opposite sex for as long as he can remember, and enduring years of Jewish guilt with his constantly arguing parents.

James Cole, a prisoner of the state in the year 2035, can earn parole if he agrees to travel back in time and thwart a devastating plague. The virus has wiped out most of the Earth's population and the remainder live underground because the air is poisonous. Returning to the year 1990, six years before the start of the plague, Cole is soon imprisoned in a psychiatric facility because his warnings sound like mad ravings. There he meets a scientist named Dr. Kathryn Railly and Jeffrey Goines, the mad son of an eminent virologist. Cole is returned by the authorities to the year 2035, and finally ends up at his intended destination in 1996. He kidnaps Dr. Railly in order to enlist her help in his quest. Cole discovers graffiti by an apparent animal rights group called the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, but as he delves into the mystery, he hears voices, loses his bearings, and doubts his own sanity. He must figure out if Goines, who seems to be a raving lunatic, holds the key to the puzzle.
