The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and often nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, and his underwater friends. Dwelling a few fathoms beneath the tropical isle of Bikini Atoll in the sub-surface city of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob lives in a two-story pineapple. Instead of taking the logical approach to everyday challenges, SpongeBob approaches life in a wayward and unconventional way. Whether searching for the ultimate spatula to perfect his burger flipping technique at the Krusty Krab or just hanging out with his best friend Patrick (an amiable starfish), SpongeBob's good intentions and overzealous approach to life usually create chaos in his underwater world.

Sunny Bridges (or just Sunny) is among the biggest music stars of his time. However, he grew sick of the commercialism and fame that came with his craft, and longed to "follow the music" again. To find it, he traveled to his childhood neighborhood, "A-Town", and stumbled upon the First-Year Music Class of the Westley Performing Arts Academy. The class consists of the overconfident drummer Li'l D who longs to be like Sunny, the sassy, brash and violent harpist Tamika, the geeky and "out-there" bass player Philly Phil, the ultra-rich and somewhat spoiled horn playing Eddie, the Asian twin percussionists Kim and Kam who are polar opposites of each other, and the vacantly happy violinist Madison. Sunny is impressed with their musical talents and decides to become their music teacher when the old one is sent away...to jail. Now, Sunny's musical tutelage mixes with this "Class of 3000"'s own unique artistic spirit to create some very weird situations!

In the retro-1980's future, robots have become commonplace. Mechanical butlers, electronic plumbers and robo-bartenders are part of everyday life, but Robot Jones is a different kind of machine altogether. He is an experimental prototype designed to interact with humans on a personal level. Though programmed with basic emotions, Robot Jones doesn't quite have a handle on dealing with them and thus, tends to be more overly dramatic and socially awkward than other teenagers. The gang were always driving in the Mystery Machine, returning from or going to a regular teenage function, when their van develops engine trouble or breaks down for a variety of reasons. Their (unintended) destination turns out to be suffering a monster problem, and the gang volunteers to investigate the case. Eventually, enough clues are found to convince the gang that the ghost or monster was a villain. Invariably, the ghost or monster was apprehended and revealed to be an apparently blameless authority figure or otherwise innocuous local who uses the disguise to cover up a crime or scam. After proclaiming "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!", the villain was then taken away to prison, and the gang was allowed to continue on their way to their destination.
