One little ancient British village still holds out against the Roman invaders. Asterix and Obelix are invited to help. They must face fog, rain, warm beer and boiled boar with mint sauce, but they soon have Governor Encyclopaedicus Britannicus's Romans declining and falling. Until a wild race for a barrel of magic potion lands them in the drink. It's not quite cricket - how about a nice cup of hot water, though? Or even the first ever tea-party?

A Mysterious Package16 November 2018	Actually, this one turned out to be much more amusing than I originally expected. I guess it may have had something to do with me not really expecting all that much from the Asterix albums of late that I ended up quite enjoying this one. In fact this was rather amusing, namely because one morning Asterix wakes up to find a baby on his doorstep, and not surprisingly Obelix has this strange idea that the stork misdelivered it. It turns out that nobody got around to explaining the birds and the bees to him, something that Asterix makes to mental note to rectify in the near future.	Well, considering that Asterix is young, male, and unmarried, having a random child appear on his doorstep, and later down the track a random woman appear claiming to be a nursemaid (despite the fact that she happens to have a male Roman accent when she gets upset, something that people find odd, but not suspicious, but then again this little village that we know so well does have a air of innocence, and stupidity, about it) does raise some questions. I probably should point out though that the only person who raises such questions, and spreads the rumours, turns out to be Inpedimentia, the Chieftain’s wife.	So, the whole question arises as to who this child is, who the child belongs to, and why it appeared mysteriously in the middle of the night. I would also raise the question as to why it has a taste for magic potion, but that might have something to go with Obelix accidentally giving the baby some when he was looking for some milk. Well, having the baby fall into the cauldron sort of brings back memories as well, though I believe they did write a story about how Obelix fell into the cauldron when he was a baby.	As can be expected everything is explained in the end, but I won’t say anything further, so as not to spoil the story. Then again I probably have said enough to spoil it anyway, but then again isn’t that what movie trailers end up doing, particularly the comedies – they show you all of the funny parts of the film so that when you watch the film you end up having seen all of the jokes, and it turns out to be pretty, well dull. Okay, I might also get some flack from the trolls about how I have spoilt the book, but then again these trolls can never be satisfied since they are always looking at claiming that you haven’t written a review, particularly if the review doesn’t say anything about the plot, or simply talks about the book in a way that they disagree with (and then refers to the review as being an unreview – gee, I see quite a lot of them on Goodereads). Still, trolls will be trolls, and as a friend of mine once said, the best way to deal with them is to starve them of oxygen (though sometimes baiting them can be just as fun).

Caesar has a plan to defeat the rebel Gaulish village once and for all - if they won’t fall in line, he’ll build Roman civilization around them and force their culture upon them! His brilliant young architect Squareonthehypotenus will build... The Mansions of the Gods! I always liked Mansions of the Gods but re-reading it today I didn’t realise how damn funny it is! The characters’ reactions are very extreme which helps. The centurion tasked with helping the architect is superstitious and terrified of the Gauls so he demands the slaves only work at night - except all of them sing LOUDLY while they work. He becomes a nervous wreck as one group of slaves bursts into their nation’s music after the other and he’s so scared the Gauls will be woken up and punch him! Getafix has magic acorns for re-growing the trees the slaves uproot in the night (poor Dogmatix - he loves trees and hates seeing them uprooted!) so night after night the Romans work and the next night discover the trees have regrown. The architect slowly becomes a nervous wreck and it’s glorious! And later on in the book, Cacofonix, the village bard… oh, big belly laugh on his scene! There’s some subtext I didn’t notice when reading this as a kid: Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo appear to be criticising trade unions as they’re portrayed here as greedy and encouraging laziness in workers. The influx of Roman tenants nearby turns the Gaulish village into a gaudy tourist trap, the creators criticising modern tourism and what it does to beautiful rural communities. There are A LOT of racist caricatures here so heads up for that. It’s a comic from 1971 and it’s so good - well written, wonderfully drawn, and so, so funny and clever - but, yeah, it’s kinda racist and that’s a shame. I don’t think the creators meant it in any hateful way and black people aren’t portrayed any more negatively than other slaves but there’s no escaping those red, red lips. Le sigh. The Mansions of the Gods is another great Asterix comic that reads just as well - maybe better? - to grown-up audiences as it does to kids. It’s a good laugh and an excellent comic. If, like me, it’s been a while since you read these books, they’re well worth a re-read. New readers are in for a treat!

Financial skulduggery in ancient Gaul! When local Chielf Whosemoralsarelastix wants a cauldron full of money kept out of Roman hands, the cash disappears while Asterix is guarding it. He and Obelix must earn enough to repay it through fairground gladiatorial contests, trendy theatrical performances, even bank robbery - they'll try anything. But whose morals are really eleastic? And how do the pirates, just for once, get an unexpected bonus.

Ah, Asterix in Corsica! One of the best albums of the series according to me. This album smells good the smell of maquis, with a touch of cheese that stinks. ..Our two Gauls will accompany a hostage in his country of origin. It is therefore in the company of the proud Ocaterinabellatchictchix that Astérix and Obelix will discover Corsica.Aesthetically, it's more than a success: the landscapes are beautiful, the inhabitants are picturesque and nicely caricatured! The women dressed in black, the little old people sitting on a ban making comments about everything, the maquis with wild pigs and legionaries lost ... I love and that's all!

One of the very first Asterix books I can remember reading as a kid. And it’s as good as ever.The title leaves no room for interpretation, this story does in fact take place at the Olympic Games. In an effort to irritate the Romans, the Gauls set off for Greece to take part in the games (as Romans, of course, since they are part of the empire and would otherwise not be allowed to compete). The kicker? They plan on using the magic potion to make a clean sweep of all the events.This doesn’t work as planned. Not having done their research, they are made aware of the fact that performance enhancing drugs aren’t allowed mere days before the games commence. This little technicality causes a problem (not only did all the men in the village come along for the ride, there now exists the very real possibility that the Gauls are going to get egg on their faces since nobody has actually trained for any of the sporting events). Fortunately Getafix and Asterix aren’t outdone that easily.In the end it’s a triumph of brains over brawn.And, of course, let's not forget all the wonderful references to Ancient Greek culture.Bonus 1: this story contains a Roman athlete named Gluteus Maximus.Bonus 2: look out for Asterix’s striped orange shorts.

The High Aldwin gives Willow a task and Willow leaves the village and embarks on the task to give the baby girl to a responsible person. In 1998 Professor Nick Cutter's wife Helen disappeared through a rupture in time known as an anomaly. Space Vets was a 39-episode children's science fiction show about a motley crew of misfit intergalactic space vets. The concept was devised by Stephen Edmondson and Jerome Vincent, but the characters were created by writer Christopher Middleton, and most of the 39 episodes written by him, too. They are able to stay in business only because of the cases they work with the Santa Barbara Police Department as psychics. Shawn and Gus go through many ups and downs trying to keep the ruse up. Can they pretend forever? Or is the world they built going to come crumbling down?

American detective comedy-drama television series

This quintessentially British sitcom is about Grace Brothers, a department store in London which is owned and kept traditional, almost pre-war (e.g. precise dress code for ladies frills and gentlemen's hats according to rank), by two brothers who look old enough to have fought in the Boer war but rarely appear, as most scenes play on one floor where Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold is the executive (meaning he enjoys an endless parade of foxy but stupid secretaries) in charge of management while his dignified floor walker, Captain Stephen Peacock, has daily charge over two small sales teams. The bossy, implicitly man-hungry widow Mrs. Betty Slocombe supervises the attractive Miss Shirley Brahms (with a terribly common Cockney accent) -with first choice of customers, on commission- the sale of women's clothes and accessories; the sales star at the gentleman's side is Mr. Wilberforce Clayborne Humpries, an implied closet-gay true gentleman, whose successive superiors are first obviously nearly retired Mr. Ernest Grainger and later formerly independent Mr. Grosman while the successive cheeky juniors are Mr. Dick Lucas and Mr. Bert Spooner. A regular visitor, and the only manual laborer but apparently best paid, is union representative Mr. Mash. Their interaction with each-other and the customers is quite formal in principle, but turns out comical in practice.

René Artois runs a small café in France during World War II. He always seems to have his hands full: He's having affairs with most of his waitresses, he's keeping his wife happy, he's trying to please the German soldiers who frequent his café, and he's running a major underground operation for the Resistance. Quite often, the Germans' incompetence itself is what nearly lands René and his cohorts in hot water; they are not helped either by the locals, who are dreadfully keen to get rid of the Germans, but their blatant and theatrical attempts at espionage and secrecy often create problems that René must solve quickly.

Inspector Raymond C. Fowler is the officer in charge of Gasforth police station, a devoted and integer servant of the crown, and a terrible stickler for rules and all forms of correctness. His second in command, Sergeant Patricia Dawkins, is also his partner and very much in command in all non-police matters, with a nasty tendency to forget her professional place too. The uniform branch is further manned by three Constables: old Trinidadian-born Frank Gladstone, promising foxy Pakistani Maggie Habib and English simpleton Kevin Goody, good friends but constantly arguing and overeager, especially by Fowler's impossibly high standards. They share the station with loudly arrogant but rather stupid and shockingly in-courteous Detective Inspector Derek Grim's CID branch, which further includes Detectives Robert Kray and Gary Boyle. The female mayor is a further worry, the crooks usually cause much less trouble then the permanent cast.

The third and fourth seasons of "Due South" pick up shortly after the first two left off. Fraser returns to Chicago, to find a blond has assumed Ray Vecchio's identity, and everyone just seems to accept it but him. Fraser and his new partner (real name Stanley Raymond Kowalski) soon find level ground to agree on, and work together to solve crimes on the mean streets of Chicago.
