HEY, QUARANTINERS! i wrote another readalong/booklist thing for f(r)iction! this book is on it: The Call Is Coming From Inside Youthis is short and anything but sweet, somehow managing to pack a whole lot of creepiness into just under 200 pages. it’s a story of a woman’s disintegration as she is invaded by a demonic presence that insinuates itself into her body and mind, slowly and irrevocably supplanting her free will, causing her to engage in increasingly self-destructive behaviors, blowing up her life as it sinks its claws ever-deeper into her mind; jeopardizing her marriage, her job, her reputation, and her list of “never have i evers,” leading her helplessly down a violent path…as much as she can recall of it. it’s a truly chilling little story of a character’s descent into madness, her blackouts leaving the reader to fill in some of the pieces themselves, but showing enough of the gruesome aftermath to know that whatever she did, it ain’t gonna win her any good citizen awards. a few months back, i read Freshwater, which is (in part) about possession manifesting as mental disorder/insanity, and i thought emezi did a fantastic job of writing that headspace—making it accessible and sympathetic to the reader. this is just as effective, but gran spins her similar situation in a different direction. instead of emezi's transcendent/poetic/mythological realm, Come Closer shows, through a tantalizingly slow psychological slippage, how easy it is to give in, to let it all go, how freeing, sometimes, to let the demon tear down the whole damn house of cards.and that, my friends, is terrifying.***********************************SPOOKTOBER READING CONTINUES!!come to my blog!

Delightfully BRUTAL Psychological Horror.Jumping into this novella, I wasn't sure what to expect. To be honest, I never even read the synopsis. I see the name, Stephen Graham Jones, and immediately pick books up. It's a compulsion.Night of the Mannequins follows Sawyer, and his group of childhood friends, when a prank goes horribly wrong.Disguising a discarded mall mannequin as a patron at the local movie theater seemed like the perfect way to get back at the stuffy assistant manager. The same one who happened to recently punish the friend group for sneaking into a movie unpaid.What starts off as a fairly innocent prank, however, turns more deadly than this group of teens could have ever imagined. Sawyer seems to be the only one with a plan to limit the destruction.First, let me just swoon for a bit over how much I love SGJ's writing. I promise not to rave for too long.The style is edgy AF, yet feels like Classic Horror all the same. I love the humor and witty dialogue that he is able to bring to such dark and haunting tales.Also, his books always go there, all the way to the deepest, darkest crevices of the human mind. It's weird. It's powerful. It's freakingly disturbing.With this being said, I was really into this novella, loving everything about it until about the 70% mark. Then I started feeling lost. While I understand the ending, some of the choices of events leading up to the ending didn't seem to fit. It made the ending seem a little abrupt and disjointed for me.Overall though, this novella is fantastic. You cannot deny the level of creativity it takes to write a story like this.One that leads you in one direction, flips that on its head and then smacks you in the face with a healthy dose of depressing reality.Sawyer is a very special protagonist. bleak shit. i had a hard time suspending my disbelief that it was *impossible* to escape the bathroom after the tornado ended, especially considering the way everything wrapped up. that said, i do love horror that is based on elements of isolation and confinement, so i was willing to (mostly) put all that aside and just enjoy the absolute fucking chaos. honestly, not bad for a novella, and i think the story has the potential to translate really well to screen for the upcoming movie. 3.5 stars(cw: casual racism, mentions of self harm, attempted suicide, alcoholism, loss of a loved one, cannibalism, murder)

Murakami doesn't believe in boundaries, so if you expect an author to pull his punches, keep on moving past Audition. From maybe the tenth page forward, it's clear that no good will come of the obsession Aoyama, a Tokyo-based, widowed documentary film-maker and father to Shige, his teen son, develops for Yamasaki, the lovely, elegant and single former-ballet dancer with a troubled childhood. The elaborate set-up of fake auditions Aoyama and his best friend, Yoshikawa devise seems to forecast that the cause of Yamasaki's ultimate vengeance will be the morally questionable nature of the auditions, but the initial manner of Aoyama's and Yamasaki's introduction turns out to have zero relevance to subsequent events. The only thing that matters is that they meet and Aoyama allow his besottedness to blind him to common sense and Yoshikawa's reasonable cautionary advice. I shook my head multiple times in disbelief until he redeemed himself (view spoiler)[with his brilliant move with the remote control. (hide spoiler)]

When Angie is found brutally murdered in her bathtub, Ben discovers that there is an evil force in the mirror that is chasing him and jeopardizing his family.

They find a weird cabin in the middle of nowhere, where three violent cannibalistic mountain men with the appearance of monsters live. The two couples try to escape from the mountain men while chased by them.

Along with much scary movie trivia, ending with bloody pieces of innocent lives scattered around the small town of Woodsboro.

Six friends are on their way to a football game. They decide to camp out for the night and continue driving the next day. The next day the friends find that they're having car troubles, so two of the friends accept a stranger's ride into a small town named Ambrose. The main attraction in Ambrose is the House of Wax. Except something is not right in this town, the wax figures are so realistic and the whole town is deserted - except for two murderous twin brothers. The six friends must fight to survive and escape from being the next exhibits in the House of Wax.

After returning from a wedding reception, a couple staying in an isolated vacation house receive a knock on the door in the mid-hours of the night. What ensues is a violent invasion by three strangers, their faces hidden behind masks. The couple find themselves in a violent struggle, in which they go beyond what either of them thought capable in order to survive.

The photographer Leon lives with his girlfriend and waitress Maya waiting for a chance to get in the photo business. When Maya contacts their friend Jurgis, he schedules a meeting for Leon with the successful owner of arts gallery Susan Hoff; she analyzes Leon's work and asks him to improve the quality of his photos. During the night, the upset Leon decides to wander on the streets taking pictures with his camera, and he follows three punks down to the subway station; when the gang attacks a young woman, Leon defends her and the guys move on. On the next morning, Leon discovers that the woman is missing. He goes to the police station, but Detective Lynn Hadley does not give much attention to him and discredits his statement. Leon becomes obsessed to find what happened with the stranger and he watches the subway station. When he sees the elegant butcher Mahogany in the train, Leon believes he might be a murderer and stalks him everywhere, in the beginning of his journey to the darkness.

When the Chase family moves to an isolated house in the middle of nowhere in Detroit, Arkin is hired to fix the windows and the doors. Later he meets his daughter and his wife that has a debt with dangerous sharks and needs money, but his week payment is not enough to pay her debts. Arkin plots to heist the safe of Michael Chase during the night to raise the necessary money. However, when he arrives in the house, he finds that a sadistic criminal has imprisoned the family and planted traps everywhere. Arkin seeks a way out of the deadly house to save his life.

In the mining town of Harmony, a drilling accident is caused by the son of the owner, Tom Hanniger. The mine collapses, burying six miners alive. The rescue team finds only Harry Warden alive, but in coma, and the other miners murdered by his pickax, and they conclude that Harry killed them to save oxygen for himself. On Valentine's Day, Harry awakes from his coma in the local hospital, and he kills twenty-two people, including a group of teenagers that are partying in the mine. Harry is killed by the deputy, but the only survivors are Tom Hanniger, his girlfriend Sarah, their friend Axel Palmer and his girlfriend Irene. Ten years later, Tom returns to Harmony after the death of his father. Tom has decided to sell the Hanniger Mine, and finds that Sarah has married Axel, who is now the local sheriff, and they have a son named Noah. On Valentine's Day, Harry Warden also returns, seeking revenge against those that had escaped his pickax in the past, and Tom is accused by Axel and other locals, who in turn makes accusations against Axel.

Kate and John Coleman are rebuilding their troubled marriage after the loss of their baby. The couple decide to adopt a child. When they meet 9-year-old Esther at the St. Marina Orphanage, they immediately fall in love with the well-educated orphan. Their son, Daniel is hostile to his new sister, but their deaf mute daughter, Max is enchanted with her - at first. Eventually, Kate begins to feel that Esther is manipulative and possibly even psychologically damaged. John refuses to listen to his wife's misgivings. Kate calls Sister Abigail at the orphanage, and the nun informs her that Esther has a troubled and mysterious history. Kate delves further into Esther's past and discovers she is not what she seems to be.

Stepan refuses, but Anna finds a card of a restaurant owned by the Russian Semyon inside the diary and she visits the old man trying to find a lead to contact Tatiana's family. When she mentions the existence of the diary, Semyon immediately offers to translate the document. However, Stepan translates part of the diary and Anna discovers that Semyon and his sick son Kirill had raped Tatiana when she was fourteen years old and forced her to work as prostitute in a brothel of their own. Further, Semyon is the dangerous boss of the Russian mafia "Vory v Zakone", jeopardizing the safety of Anna and her family. Meanwhile, Semyon's driver Nikolai Luzhin gets close to Kirill and Semyon, climbing positions in the criminal organization, but he helps Anna, her family and the baby.

After a stint in a psychiatric facility Jessica, her husband and a friend move to remote farm they have recently purchased. There they find a young woman by the name of Emily living in the house and they invite her to stay. When Jessica goes for a swim in the lake, she sees a body just below the water's surface. When they go into the village to sell some old furniture, they learn that a woman by the name of Abigail Bishop drowned in the lake and her body was never found. Local folklore has that Abigail is now a vampire roaming the countryside. A mute blond girl leads her to the body of a dead man but the body is not there when Jessica goes for help. Jessica and those around begin to wonder if she is losing her mind.

A woman writing a children's fantasy story is constantly harrassed by visits and communications from people, who may or may not be real. When she and her husband pay a visit to their isolated, countryside retreat - her childhood home - her experience intensifies, and she resorts to drastic measures to eliminate the problem.

Mary Henry is enjoying the day by riding around in a car with two friends. When challenged to a drag, the women accept, but are forced off of a bridge.
