Malcolm X Unlike most of the people I’m writing to I don’t like to read, but if I were to read a book I would choose the Biography of Malcolm X. Like most of the civil rights activists Malcolm wasn’t content with being called a “nigger” for the rest of his life. Malcolm was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the second youngest of seven. I don’t want to tell the book because the point is to get you to read it. This book will get your brain thinking in a different way about how things were back when black people and white people were unequal. This book will make your emotions run with happiness, sadness, confusion, and shock. This book is full of twists,turns, and action packed chapters that show you the life of Malcolm X. It’s interesting to see the big transformation from when Malcolm was young to when Malcolm was older and the intelligence that Malcolm had gained from the mistakes and observations in his life. Part of the transformation was Malcolm being raised in a house of god leaves get’s into trouble, believes there is no god to the point where Malcolm becomes a man of god and follower of Ala. If you read this book cover to cover your life will be changed, This book has opened my eyes to how hard it was to get the freedom I have today. This book may also not be your cup of tea. If you would want to look more in depth about Malcolm’s life in his words I would recomend you read Malcolm X’s autobiography. This book will change your views about stuff you never thought you would think of and then some. Thanks for listening

The Spook Who Sat by the Door tells the story of Dan Freeman, an intelligent and 'naturally athletic' man from the ghetto who becomes the first black CIA agent, then resigns and returns home to Chicago to work with what would now be called 'at risk' youth. To his white bosses and funders, he appears to be 'tame' and eager to please; meanwhile, he is actually training street gangs to become a revolutionary insurgency, which launches during race riots near the end of the book. As a middle class white male, born the month the book was published, I'm not in the target audience for this book; but it was listed in Sacred Fire The Qbr 100 Essential Black Books, and I'd never heard of it and it sounded interesting. As a work of art, the book suffers some of the same flaws as such other ideological novels as Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. The writing entirely lacks nuance; the villains are cardboard cutouts. In Spook, every time a white character has a chance to say something obtuse, racist, and patronizing, he does. With one exception, black characters who have a view about race and racism that differs from Freeman's are made to look pathetic as well. Meanwhile, the hero is a virtual superman, brighter, more skilled, stronger, and a better lover than any of his opponents or rivals. That's not necessarily uncommon in the thriller genre, but it does work against any claim the book makes to depict the world as it is. At the same time, the bitter satire against whites (both overtly racist white supremacists and white liberals) and the scathing depictions of bourgeois blacks are hard to forget.As a historical artifact, the book is very much of its time and place. Its casual sexism is appalling. There are few female characters. Joy, the upwardly mobile young love of Freeman, is presented as shallow, unfaithful to her husband, and generally unworthy of respect; and yet Freeman sleeps her with on an ongoing basis. The other major female character is a sex worker - all sex workers in this book are routinely called 'whores' - who Freeman hires regularly and teaches to respect her own beauty by showing her a picture of a 'Queen of Dahomey'. The book isn't exactly homophobic, but it doesn't really grasp sexual orientation: Freeman is presented as such a skilled and respectful lover that the sex worker, although she's lesbian and in a relationship, lies to her partner to spend a weekend with him. The hollowness of the sexual relationships is revealing. At a critical juncture, Freeman lectures a young revolutionary about how it isn't meaningful to hate white people; it's essential to love black identity. That commitment to an abstract idea doesn't leave any room for a deep, intimate commitment to one other person, and it's part of what feels ultimately false - or, alternatively, deeply warped - about Freeman's worldview. In a way, the built-in misogyny coupled with a self-destructive ideological commitment reminded me of another revolutionary fantasy, Edward Abbey's Monkey Wrench Gang.The book was published during the Vietnam War, following a wave of nations declaring independence around the world, and following the disastrous riots and political implosion of the Democratic party in 1968. To read it now, though, is to recall the civil wars in Lebanon; ethnic cleansing in the Balkans in the 1990s; the Rwandan genocide and ongoing chaos in the Congo; the slide of Syria into anarchy over the last two years. That international view is appropriate; author Greenlee wrote the book after leaving the US Foreign Service and living for several years in Greece. In 1969, the links between American imperialism abroad and American racism at home were obvious, and, in one of the few passages offering a theoretical explanation of Freeman's strategy, Greenlee writes, "We don't have to win; what we have to do is get down to the nitty-gritty and force whitey to choose between the two things he seems to dig more than anything else: [messing] with us and playing Big Daddy to the world."[112]. But it's much harder to see today how racial or ethnic insurgency ends in anything other than lasting bitterness, recurring violence, and the destruction of space for civil society to exist. To be fair, it may not have been clear in 1969 either; the novel ends with race war in progress across the nation, but no real indication of how it will end. Ultimately, because of that indeterminacy, I think it's a mistake to call this a template for revolution. It's much more a projection of the experience of a particular kind of 'passing' - not, in this case, pretending to be white when one is black, but pretending to be fully invested in and committed to the success of the American Experiment, when one is also acutely conscious of deep historical and ongoing racial injustice, and of the likelihood that however much it changes, it won't change fast or far enough. Of course it is possible to feel both - loyalty and searing anger. But for an author or reader who is carrying a heavy load of accumulated rage, Spook offers the fantasy that one can rise above and control that antinomy - can wear loyalty as a mask while planning the system's immolation. For anyone who has ever felt pulled in two directions - black or otherwise - such a fantasy has temporary power, and some value as a spur towards greater self-understanding.

In 1967, this revolutionary work exposed the depths of systemic racism in this country and provided a radical political framework for reform: true and lasting social change would only be accomplished through unity among African-Americans and their independence from the preexisting order. An eloquent document of the civil rights movement that remains a work of profound social relevance 25 years after it was first published.

The Classic Freewheeling Look at Race Relations Through the Ages Mumbo Jumbo is Ishmael Reed's brilliantly satiric deconstruction of Western civilization, a racy and uproarious commentary on our society. In it, Reed, one of our preeminent African-American authors, mixes portraits of historical figures and fictional characters with sound bites on subjects ranging from ragtime to Greek philosophy. Cited by literary critic Harold Bloom as one of the five hundred most significant books in the Western canon, Mumbo Jumbo is a trenchant and often biting look at black-white relations throughout history, from a keen observer of our culture.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award nominee Martin McDonagh (In Bruges). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell), an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. McMurphy and the other inmates band together to make a rebellious stance against the atrocious Nurse.

In the dystopian world of 2027 London, humans have been incapable of reproducing for 18 year for an unknown reason, meaning the imminent extinction of the species. Britain is the one remaining civilized society on the planet, which has resulted in people wanting to migrate there, so it has become a police state to handle the immigrants, who are placed into refugee camps. Lowly government bureaucrat Theo Faron, once an activist, is approached by the Fishes, deemed a terrorist group, led by his ex-wife Julian Taylor, whom he hasn't seen in almost 20 years, since their marriage disintegrated after their infant son Dylan's death during the 2008 flu pandemic. Although the Fishes did use terrorist means in their on-going revolution against the state in the fight for immigrant rights, Julian vows that they now garner support solely by speaking to the people, and she wants Theo to use his connections to get transit papers for a young immigrant woman named Kee who needs to get to the coast. Although initially reluctant to do it because of the difficulty, Theo is able to grant Julian this favor, however with the change that he now needs to accompany Kee on her journey. As Theo and Kee progress on that journey, Theo learns more and more about what's going on, including the reason that Kee needs to get to the coast, the fact that no one in the group knows if their end destination even exists, and that his and Kee's lives are in greater danger than he believed when they started the journey. But Theo's sole mission becomes to help Kee at any cost for the survival of the species.

Following a truck hijack in New York, five criminals are arrested and brought together for questioning. As none of them are guilty, they plan a revenge operation against the police. The operation goes well, but then the influence of a legendary mastermind criminal called Keyser Söze is felt. It becomes clear that each one of them has wronged Söze at some point and must pay back now. The payback job leaves 27 men dead in a boat explosion, but the real question arises now: Who actually is Keyser Söze?

They share a close bond, and throughout the show they deal with internal struggles with themselves, their friendship, and the African-American community. Issa works at a non-profit that benefits middle-school-aged students of color, "We Got Y'all." She struggles to put the spark back into her relationship with her long-term boyfriend Lawrence, who has been slacking in their relationship since his start-up company failed. Molly is a successful corporate attorney who has career success but difficulty with dating men. The half-hour series explores social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.

Meet the wildly dysfunctional Bluth family. This family was once at the height of real estate development in Orange County, California. But when the family business - the Bluth Company - goes bust, they're suddenly found penniless with their assets frozen. They move into their last remaining asset - the model home left over from their latest housing tract. Their luxury vehicles are replaced with a reminder of the family's former wealth: 'the stair car that accompanied their private jet'. The patriarch of the family is George Bluth - he's now in prison, and loving every minute of it. This is an animated sitcom about the antics of a dysfunctional family. Homer is the oafish unhealthy beer loving father, Marge is the hardworking homemaker wife, Bart is the perpetual ten-year-old underachiever (and proud of it), Lisa is the unappreciated eight-year-old genius, and Maggie is the cute, pacifier loving silent infant.

Comedian Dave Chappelle hosts this sketch-comedy show that parodies many of the nuances of race and culture.

As a child Matt Murdock was blinded by a chemical spill in a freak accident. Instead of limiting him it gave him superhuman senses that enabled him to see the world in a unique and powerful way. Now he uses these powers to deliver justice, not only as a lawyer in his own law firm, but also as vigilante at night, stalking the streets of Hell's Kitchen as Daredevil, the man without fear.

In this modernized version of the Conan Doyle characters, using his detective plots, Sherlock Holmes lives in early 21st century London and acts more cocky towards Scotland Yard's detective inspector Lestrade because he's actually less confident. Doctor Watson is now a fairly young veteran of the Afghan war, less adoring and more active.

2017 British comedy-drama television series

The past, present, and future lives of surviving Oceanic Flight 815 passengers are dramatically intertwined as a fight for survival ensues in a quest for answers after crashlanding on a mysterious island. Each discovery prompts yet more secrets, as the hastily-formed colony search for a way off the island, or is this their home?

In crime ridden Gotham City, Thomas and Martha Wayne are murdered before young Bruce Wayne's eyes. Although Gotham City Police Department detectives, James Gordon, and his cynical partner, Harvey Bullock, seem to solace's the case quickly, things are not so simple. Inspired by Bruce's traumatized desire for justice, Gordon vows to find it amid Gotham's corruption. Thus begins Gordon's lonely quest that would set him against his own comrades and the underworld with their own deadly rivalries and mysteries. Providing comedy/news in the tradition of TV Nation and SNL's Weekend Update, Comedy Central's Daily Show reports on the foibles and of the real world with a satirical edge. In addition to news stories, the Daily Show also has celebrities (and semi-celebrities) on for interviews with the host, Trevor Noah. Lampooning everything from televangelists to Charlton Heston ("I did not play a homo in Ben-Hur"), and shamelessly assigning faux-news epithets ("Newt Gingrich: Giant Toddler") Kilborn, Winstead, and the crew actually manage to report some real news from time to time.

US late-night satirical television program

Love, Death + Robots is a 5-time Emmy winning animation anthology series produced by Blur Studio. Launched in March of 2019 on Netflix, Love, Death + Robots delivers a variety of style and story unlike anything else, spanning the genres of science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror, and more.
