Weirdly, this might be my least favorite fantasy by Feist. I'm usually quite happy with them. Interesting characters, great locations, solid adventures, great plots. And generally, the worldbuilding is something quite good.So what happened here? A confluence of factors that may not bother other people but firmly set me down into a camp of 'I don't care'. Maybe I was kinda disappointed with Erik. It started out fairly interesting and I kinda hoped it would go the standard direction of a hidden prince, but after the rape, murder, run and capture, I think I just started wondering where the rest of the tale could go.Mercenaries. Secret missions. ... Well, it could have been pretty cool. Unfortunately, I just wasn't all that interested. The amassing army, the somewhat inconsequential cameos of characters I did love, and the primary action did little to spark my interest. Much. I wanted to like it more than I did. I mean, after the previous two novels, I was pretty much riding high. To jump forward in time this much to the point where the king dies, however? I guess I got pretty bummed.This won't be stopping me from continuing the series, but I will be hoping for more, later.

I'm having a great time. And yes, Pug is in here. That means that the fate of many many worlds is at stake. And the gods are freaking out. :)Is this series getting really good again? I'd say so. It was never all that bad, but all the things I used to get annoyed with have been excised nicely. Now it's all adventure, intrigue, battles, spies, and enough assassins and mad gods to keep anyone amused. :)

Wow! This book has it all! Magicians, demons, serpent-people, elves, Dragon Lords, dwarves, alternate dimensions, magical portals, romance, deception, revenge, sea battles, mountain battles, battles of wit, fire oil, catapults, flaming moats, political intrigue, and even evil cannibals!Sometimes I have seen where people say that Feist's series starts losing some steam around this point, but this was an action packed climax for the Serpentwar Saga. And, I say climax as it was so intense, but there is still one book in the series left, so who knows what further excitement is ahead of me.One thing that I loved about this book is that it has the most ties back to the original Riftwar Saga that I have seen in awhile. In fact, a lot of that plot that seemed finished comes back for further resolution in this book. Also, I have seen reviews complaining that some of this series does not have as much magic as they would like, but this one is magic packed!Fantasy fans should check this out, but be sure to start at the beginning!

Gather round children, and cast your minds back to the ye old days of the late 80's/early 90's, when fantasy was still very much an underground thing, most stories were tedious Tolkien retreads or Dungeons and Dragons sessions put down on paper, and writers of the feminine persuasion were notably light on the ground. Which makes this book and the various series it spawn so interesting....Nowadays, female fantasy authors are a pretty common sight, so it's a bit shocking to consider just how ahead of its time Dragon Prince was in terms of what could be done in a traditional fantasy novel. When I first picked it up, it was amazed just how different this was from the other fare to be found in bookstores (yes, books were sold in actual stores. Ask your Dad....)What Melanie Rawn did with this story was take all the elements of an awesome epic fantasy and mix it with the conventions of a romance novel, seasoned with some of the most detailed and compelling examples of world building to be found anywhere. The result was something groundbreaking. While there are battles galore and fantastical deed by the score, the core of this tale is the relationship between Rohan and Sioned, the passion that draws them together, the dangers and obstacles that block them. No final voyages to Valhalla here...more along the lines of a traditional romance, Lancelot and Guinevere, Romeo and Juliet, or any number of bodice rippers sold by the dozen made magnificent by the inclusion of dragons.Today it's a common enough formula, which makes this book something of a groundbreaker. It showed (to angsty Gen-X teenagers at least) that fantasy could be more than just the slay the dragon while standing on a mountain of skulls. That there was room for real emotion and passion.In short, a good read. Not to mention the cover art by Michael Whelan, reason enough to buy the printed version.Posted by Zackery Arbela
