This has to be my favorite of the Young Wizards series, although others come close. The premise, the story, the characters, the places; everything Duane did fantastically in her other books gets stepped up a notch.While Kit and Nita's journey was strange and eye-opening (and seeing the depths of the Lone One's ambiguous deviousness was fun--especially as a girl this time!) But it has to be admitted; it was the events with the foreign exchange wizards back on Earth that stole the show.I like watching Dairine's character grow, especially as I thought she was being neglected ever since "A Wizard Abroad". This book gave her a huge chance to do that. But really, we can talk character development all we want. But taking a Christmas tree, a giant purple centipede, and a holier-than-thou alien prince to the mall? It does not get better than this. Filif and Sker'ret were a lot of fun, but I think Roshaun was the best newcomer-character. I loved the dynamic between him and Dairine...it was built at just the right pace. And the climax was breathtaking. Be prepared for cliffhangers galore.

This review contains spoilers for So You Want to Be a Wizard and Deep Wizardry.High Wizardry continues the story of Nita Callahan, a teenage wizard from New York, and her partner Kit Juarez. It also adds a third character to the mix: Dairine Callahan, a child genius who is determined to follow in her older sister’s magical footsteps. Unlike previous books, which were told entirely from Nita’s point-of-view, High Wizardry alternates between Nita and Dairine’s perspectives.The first book in this series So You Want to Be a Wizard, felt like a blend of science fiction and fantasy, while book two, Deep Wizardry, was more straightforward fantasy. High Wizardry balances that out by leaning heavily on science fiction, featuring aliens and space travel. I enjoyed that aspect – I’m a sucker for aliens and space travel – but it had its drawbacks.The reason I rated this book four stars instead of five was that it was at times too complex and philosphical. The other books were already more complex and philosophical than you’d expect from middle grade novels, which allowed me to come back to them as an adult and appreciate them in a new way. This book takes it a bit too far, though, and even reading it as an adult, there were times I didn’t fully understand what was going on, and toward the end, for a good 50 pages, Diane Duane’s philosophical musings were incessant and overbearing.High Wizardry follows a similar narrative arc to SYWTBAW: In that book, Nita and Kit faced the evil Lone Power on their Ordeal, a life-or-death test every new wizard must pass. In this book, it’s Dairine’s turn to fight evil and pass her Ordeal. Despite these similarities, High Wizardry introduces plenty of new material to keep things fresh. The result is a balanced mix of familiarity and novelty, which, in my opinion, is exactly what authors should strive for when writing a series.I don’t love Dairine quite as much as I love Nita – I think that would be impossible – but she’s still a great character. They have plenty in common: They’re both intelligent, they both love to read, they’re both a bit nerdy. But whereas Nita is level-headed and cautious, Dairine is impulsive and overconfident, and has to learn the hard way that not even she knows everything. It helped that this book wasn’t written entirely from Dairine’s perspective; I still had the familiarity of Nita, and discovering the similarities and differences between the two sisters was interesting.

To give Nita a vacation from magic--and to separate her from Kit, her partner in wizardry--Nita's parents pack her off for a monthlong stay with her eccentric aunt in Ireland. But the Old World is even more steeped in magical doings than the United States, and Nita soon finds herself and a host of Irish wizards battling creatures from a nightmare Ireland--a realm where humankind is the stuff of tales and storybooks, and where the legends and monsters of Irish mythology are a deadly reality.So much for vacation abroad....

Nita's having some problems.First, she's started high school, and while she's still considered brainy, her subjects aren't coming as easily to her as they used to. She's starting to feel kinda inadequate next to Kit, who, though a year younger, is still breezing through everything.Going along with that, she's not quite sure what to do about Kit. Their partnership is hitting some rough water, and she can't understand how he can insist on being so...wrong! It's affecting their friendship and their wizardry, and she's not quite sure which is worse.Finally, there's her mom. She's sick. Real sick. Sick enough that the doctors aren't too hopeful. But Nita knows things doctors don't, and can do things they can't. Most of all, Nita knows exactly Who's fault this is.Now it's personal.But with so much doubt in herself, Kit being uncooperative, and her mom's life at stake, can Nita find a cure in time? Or might she have to make a deal with that One she's devoted her life to fighting?I cried a LOT in this book. When Nita's mom first gets sick. When they first visit the hospital. When Dairine breaks down. When Nita breaks down. And more. Just the thought of losing my own mom...like that... I'm warning you, there is a lot of realistic emotional distress here, for realistic reasons, and if your family or friends have experienced anything similar, it might hit even harder.I found this book a lot more engaging than the last. Nita and Kit are back in the forefront of things. In fact, Kit gets his own share of narration, like Dairine did in High Wizardry. Though Nita is still in charge of the main plot, having Kit's side of things helps not only soften the blow of Nita's despair but also provides more insight into our co-main character which we have been so sorely lacking before now.It's been really easy for me to forget how young these characters really are. I think in book one Nita was 12 and Kit was 11; here, Nita is 14 and Kit is 13. This is the first time I found them acting their ages consistently throughout the book. Yes, they're both dealing with magical responsibilities and situations well above a 'normal' teenager, but their internal and personal struggles finally feel real. Not to say the other books lacked for it, but it definitely set this one apart in a good way.As far as complexity goes, this installment has its fair share of advanced content. Nita's attempt to help her mom requires experience and practice in a field she hasn't yet acquired, so she's sent to train in 'practice universes', where the natural or physical laws aren't quite as solid as in our universe. Tom and Carl get into some technobabble when trying to explain these, but Nita manages to translate things well enough for the reader. It's complex, but engaging at the same time.If you managed to make it through book 4, this one is definitely worth the struggle. It's longer, and you might have to take a couple breaks to dry your eyes (luckily, I had the audiobook going through the tears), but you're compelled through it, even from the first page where Nita and her mom are engaged in a completely relatable conversation. If you care about the characters, which by this point it's practically impossible not to be, you'll read this book with a fervor.Approximate Reading Time: 5.5 Hours

Matilda Wormwood is an exquisite and intelligent little girl. Unfortunately, Matilda is misunderstood by her family because she is very different from their ways of life. As time passes, Matilda finally starts school that has a kindly teacher, loyal friends and a sadistic principal. As she gets fed up with the constant cruelty, Matilda begins to realize that she has a gift of telekinetic powers. After some days of practice, Matilda suddenly turns the tables to stand up to her parents and outwit the principal.

Dory is a wide-eyed, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds or so. The one thing she can remember is that she somehow became separated from her parents as a child. Fishermen separate a young orca whale (Willy) from his parents and he ends up in a fish bowl at a marina. Meanwhile, a street kid runs afoul of the law and gets caught vandalising the marina, but his social worker gets him off the hook (so to speak) provided he cleans up his mess at the marina. While there, he befriends the whale and teaches him tricks, something the trainer hasn't been able to do. But when Willy is a dud in front of the audience, the marina owner plans some bad things, and the boy and his friends must try to (*** MAJOR SPOILERS ***) free Willy.

The group of pets travel across forested mountains and areas of wide-open countryside, while their family searches for them in the same areas.

Goofy finds out about his son's antics (sort of), and decides a fishing trip, like his dad took him on, is the solution. Of course, he doesn't know that Max finally lands a date with Roxanne for a party thrown by the class valedictorian. Through the movie, Goofy tries to bring Max out of his shell, while Max resents being taken away, and lying to Roxanne about the trip (he tells her he & his dad will be appearing on TV at the PowerLine concert in LA). Will Max sink or swim? Will Goofy goof up his son's first shot at romance? Will Bigfoot step back? And what about those nuns?

John Doe is an intelligent adventure series, named after the main character, albeit not by name: 'John Doe' is called thus because nobody knows the name of the man who literally fell from the sky, naked, in the sea near an obscure island. When Cambodian fishermen save him, it soon becomes clear his memory is in a paradoxical state: he has total amnesia concerning his own past, even his real name, but has more factual knowledge stored in his brain then even the Google computer banks on every possible other subject, as if he had memorized the Library of Congress, so one rarely needs to read anything when he's around. He also is intelligent and inquisitive enough to understand and use much of that knowledge, and keeps rolling into all kinds of weird mysteries, teaming up with various characters, each of which must first be convinced he's legit, such as police detectives Frank Hayes and Jamie Avery, but gets frustrated by finding his own story the most elusive, probably linked to some secret experiment.
