I know that there is a whole slew of people who object to reading adaptations and abridged versions of classics. And for a mature audience, I'm against abridged versions too..... but I've chosen to use adaptations, re-tellings and abridged versions of certain classics with my son as a first exposure.... I've done this with Homer's Odyssey and the Iliad - and he will tell you that the Odyssey is his all time favorite story. Mission accomplished - when he's older and ready to tackle Homer - he'll do so with fond memories and a bit of knowledge with which to work from...instead of feeling intimidated!I'm choosing to do the same thing with Shakespeare... my strategy will be to introduce a child's adaptation and then to watch a child-friendly production as an introduction to some of the Bard's works.... hoping that he'll grow up knowing that he loves Shakespeare...Bruce Coville's adaptation of A Midsummere's Night Dream was fantastic... the pictures were captivating and the wording gave just the perfect flavor as a first intro to this play! I look forward to reading more of his adaptations!

Peter Kropotkin, the anarchist prince, a contemporary of Emma Goldman, is rescued from his deathbed by a man from the future who sends him to Richmond Virginia in 1999 to live his life again (he is only in his 30's when he is reborn). Revolution ensues.The book started off really well. I enjoyed Peter's character and his personal and political acclimation to his future. And then about halfway through it gets really bad. The characters fall apart (even Peter) and become flat and annoying. And then there's this whole revolutionary moment that develops which is poorly developed and not at all credible. The "organizing" that goes on is basically Peter talking to people randomly about their lives and the preposterousness of capitalism. The struggle is supposedly about race and the legacy of slavery but the most complex black character we are given, a man who escaped slavery and is befriended by Peter, is poorly created and not well fleshed out. So by the end, I was so irritated, I just couldn't read the last 20 pages.

Larousse Gastronomique (pronounced [la.ʁus ɡas.tʁɔ.nɔ.mik]) is an encyclopedia of gastronomy. The majority of the book is about French cuisine, and contains recipes for French dishes and cooking techniques. The first edition included few non-French dishes and ingredients; later editions include many more. The book was originally published by Éditions Larousse in Paris in 1938.The first edition (1938) was edited by Prosper Montagné, with the collaboration of Dr Alfred Gottschalk, with prefaces by each of author-chefs Georges Auguste Escoffier and Philéas Gilbert (1857-1942). Gilbert was a collaborator in the creation of this book as well as Le Guide Culinaire (1903) with Escoffier, leading to some cross-over with the two books. It caused Escoffier to note when he was asked to write the preface that he could "see with my own eyes," and "Montagné cannot hide from me the fact that he has used Le Guide as a basis for his new book, and certainly used numerous recipes."

Foucault's Pendulum is divided into ten segments represented by the ten Sefiroth. The novel is full of esoteric references to the Kabbalah. The title of the book refers to an actual pendulum designed by the French physicist Léon Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of the earth, which has symbolic significance within the novel.Bored with their work, and after reading too many manuscripts about occult conspiracy theories, three vanity publisher employees (Belbo, Diotallevi and Casaubon) invent their own conspiracy for fun. They call this satirical intellectual game "The Plan," a hoax that connects the medieval Knights Templar with other occult groups from ancient to modern times. This produces a map indicating the geographical point from which all the powers of the earth can be controlled—a point located in Paris, France, at Foucault’s Pendulum. Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking is a 2011 cookbook by Nathan Myhrvold, Chris Young and Maxime Bilet. The book is an encyclopedia and a guide to the science of contemporary cooking.It is notable for the use of elaborate equipment that many non-professional kitchens lack (sous vide machines, vacuum-chamber sealers, culinary centrifuges, culinary torches, high-precision gram scales) and for its lush photography, particularly its tricky cross-sectional images of ovens, BBQs or woks (and the food being prepared inside), apparently caught in the act of cooking, though this isn't physically possible; each individual part of the apparatus was hand-cut in a nearby metal shop, and the food—already cut in half— was added with hasty, high-speed photography and combined into a finished image in post production.

Every lawyer must read Holmes' The Common Law. Every doctor must read the Corpus Hippocraticum. Every priest must read Aquinas' Summa Theologica. So it is that every serious cook should read Escoffier. The author did not write this magnum opus with the home cook in mind; it was written for cooking professionals and therefor omits much of the instruction necessary to a mass-market cookbook in the 21st Century. His goal was to organize and simplify the classic French cooking of Antoine Carême, who he regarded as a master of haute cuisine. The result is useful in varying ways. It contains many recipes which the modern cook will not attempt; he assumes that one has unlimited supplies of truffles and fois gras at hand. His recipe for turtle soup includes detailed instructions on how to kill the turtle and get it out of its shell. The techniques were written down before the invention of the blender, the food processor and the convection oven; they need to be adjusted accordingly. His measurements vary from finicky precise to opaquely vague: exactly 9/10 of a pint of this and "a glassful" of that; exactly 207 degrees Fahrenheit and the temperature of a "warm oven." But it is all Escoffier, who came down from the mountaintop bearing nearly a thousand pages of culinary commandments. I thought it would take a year to read them all; the task was accomplished in only ten months. They were ten months well spent.
