The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a children's fantasy novel by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. This is the very first book I ever read. Other than "See Spot Run" that is. I am mildly dyslexic. Not enough to get the special classes in school, or beneficial status in college, but enough to have made learning how to read a truly traumatic experience. Then one summer my father gave me his copy of this book. I was about 8 or 9-years-old. It took me several months, and a lot of help, but I finished this book, and never looked back. As a young girl I didn't understand a lot of the puns Anthony uses, but I did know this was a story about a little girl, and a dragon, and a wonderful world where anything could happen. I have never lost the love I felt for Xanth at that moment. And I often reach for one of these books when this mundane world becomes to overwhelming. And while my husband's puns make me groan in pain, Anthony's always make me laugh, chuckle or smile. I will always cherish this book and I recommend it to anyone.

This was the first Xanth book I ever read, because I didn't realize at the time that this was a continuing series, or that this was the third book in the series. I found myself fascinated with Xanth, with the characters, and I fell in love with Dor! Then, as the book went on, and Dor was presented with his quest, and Jumper was magically brought into the past with him - everytime I start this book, I cannot put it down until I finish! If that is not a good endorsement to read this series, I don't know what is. Highly recommend it, and the fact that it is the third one did not detract from my enjoyment the first time, so it is not necessary to read the books in order.If you love magical fantasy - YOU NEED TO BE READING PIERS ANTHONY!

I tried, I really tried. The way that my sister was talking about this book, it sounded like so much fun, and there was so much potential. But... I just can't like this book. First off, I think that it could have been so much shorter. It takes so much time, trying to sound more important than it really is, that it just sucks pages into bizarre explanations. Secondly, I can only take so much of reading about nymph's pert little butts, their supple arms, and how female they are. And pretty much the whole look on women in this book is pretty insulting. Female characters are shallow, caring only about their looks and how others perceive them and are often put down as being the classic ball-and-chain and at times it seems that women are just meant to be evil beings that are only on Xanth to torture the men and exploit their barbaric weaknesses. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but by the end, it was just too much. And why did females seem to only have talents that would help them look nicer or change their appearance? Really? Why couldn't they have something actually useful? Okay. I'll stop here. Third, the puns. I liked them at first, the puns about the creatures and plants in Xanth, the shoe tree that provides fresh shoes and such. But eventually, it just got a bit silly. Like the jellyfish. A fish made of jelly... That was a bit... thin, in my opinion. Overall, I just couldn't get into this book. Perhaps it is because it was written for a different generation, but it just didn't settle with me. The entire book eventually reached an insanity that just wasn't fun anymore, and that just made me want to leave the book right there.

I first read this book when I was in 3rd grade, on loan from my neighbor Rolf Mueller. I remember thinking it a hoot, and though many years have passed since 3rd grade, I remembered the book fondly.A few years back, while looking through a closing used book store, I found a paperback copy for $.50. I bought it, fully intending to read it again at some point. And, so I have done. And it was still a hoot.It's a simple read, very punny, that tells the story of an ogre much more engaging than Shrek. This ogre, Smash, who is quite cunning and vegetarian for an ogre, is on a search to find out what he is missing in his life. The Good Magician Humphrey sends him out on a quest across Xanth to find it, and along the way Smash befriends seven individual lovely lasses of varying backgrounds and species. Various pun-loaded antics ensue.Like I said, not a complicated read, but fun enough to keep one interested.The neatest thing about it, to me, is that the book happens in the magical world of Xanth. Anthony supplies a map of the magical land at the beginning of the book, and Xanth is, very clearly, Florida. I happened to finish the last 5 chapters of this book while riding through Florida on a train. The environment closely resembled that in the book, and in the afterward about the author, I learned that Anthony himself lives on his tree farm in Florida and drew inspiration from the scenery around him, including the train tracks at the back of his property.It provided a glorious end to my second read through.
