This was a fascinating and harrowing book. I picked it up after hearing it discussed on A Good Read, which is a fabulous podcast from BBC Radio 4.I've always felt an abyss-like fear open up in front of me whenever I think of nuclear war, another reviewer mentioned the equally harrowing Threads tv show shown in 1984 on the BBC which terrified me as a 14 year old, and so it proved with this book. I was gripped by the realistic description but didn't want to read on at the same time.I found it all quite sad but politically powerful nonetheless, especially the motives of the "army" that takes control after the blast - did anyone else think "Yeah, that's precisely what would happen"?I find this, and all things around this subject, terrifying not because of the "bomb" per se but because of the mundanity of life afterwards, only magnified. The violence and greed quickly return in this book, and in my mind that is an accurate reflection of what would happen in reality, as does the day to day monotony. One character refers to the "heaven" that they lost, heaven being the ordinary life that they (and we) take for granted and I wondered if their lives were that fulfilling beforehand or just by contrast. It's the second one I'm sure, which makes the loss sadder to me, that it's not reality that they pine for but just a perceived reality.One character says near the end "how's it going to end..." and the reply is "Not with a bang but a whimper". And that really is the tragedy at the heart of the book, that the bomb itself is not the scary thing, the truly terrifying thing is to be left alive afterwards and be amongst those trying to scrape out an existence until death comes on quietly, regardless and inevitably.EDIT: By the way this was a cast iron 5 star book for me but some slight doubt crept in toward the end when I felt that some of the action became two dimensional and some of the character's reactions seemed forced, but it's definitely a great, if not perfect, book.

McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. McMurphy and the other inmates band together to make a rebellious stance against the atrocious Nurse.

In the dystopian world of 2027 London, humans have been incapable of reproducing for 18 year for an unknown reason, meaning the imminent extinction of the species. Britain is the one remaining civilized society on the planet, which has resulted in people wanting to migrate there, so it has become a police state to handle the immigrants, who are placed into refugee camps. Lowly government bureaucrat Theo Faron, once an activist, is approached by the Fishes, deemed a terrorist group, led by his ex-wife Julian Taylor, whom he hasn't seen in almost 20 years, since their marriage disintegrated after their infant son Dylan's death during the 2008 flu pandemic. Although the Fishes did use terrorist means in their on-going revolution against the state in the fight for immigrant rights, Julian vows that they now garner support solely by speaking to the people, and she wants Theo to use his connections to get transit papers for a young immigrant woman named Kee who needs to get to the coast. Although initially reluctant to do it because of the difficulty, Theo is able to grant Julian this favor, however with the change that he now needs to accompany Kee on her journey. As Theo and Kee progress on that journey, Theo learns more and more about what's going on, including the reason that Kee needs to get to the coast, the fact that no one in the group knows if their end destination even exists, and that his and Kee's lives are in greater danger than he believed when they started the journey. But Theo's sole mission becomes to help Kee at any cost for the survival of the species.

Rapunzel is now a teenager and her hair has grown to a length of 70-feet. The beautiful Rapunzel has been in the tower her entire life, and she is curious of the outside world. One day, the bandit Flynn Ryder scales the tower and is taken captive by Rapunzel. Rapunzel strikes a deal with the charming thief to act as her guide to travel to the place where the floating lights come from that she has seen every year on her birthday. Rapunzel is about to have the most exciting and magnificent journey of her life.

While in prison, Alex learns of an experimental program in which convicts are programmed to detest violence. If he goes through the program, his sentence will be reduced and he will be back on the streets sooner than expected. But Alex's ordeals are far from over once he hits the streets of Britain..

When he sees her report, he's impressed and asks her to work with him and she does. She's anti-social but is extremely efficient.
