The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep. J.D. Salinger's classic novel of teenage angst and rebellion was first published in 1951. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. It was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. It has been frequently challenged in the court for its liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and in the 1950's and 60's it was the novel that every teenage boy wants to read.

I've read about neurologist Oliver Sacks in other books but I'm pretty sure this was my first experience reading one of his books and I actually really enjoyed it. Sacks writes up narratives for patients he works with or people he meets with neurological conditions in a way that makes it much easier to step into the perspective of the person and gives them a story. I personally don't enjoy reading case studies in academia because they do tend to stay detached from the person being talked about and so I really liked Sacks more personal accounts of other people. I especially liked reading about Tourette's syndrome and the surgeon who has Tourette's syndrome because I didn't have as much familiarity with it. The other account I enjoyed was the one of the artist who becomes colorblind later in life and found the neurophysiology discussion of the situation really cool because I already had some knowledge of the visual pathways. At times he can seem to go on and on when writing and it can be tedious but I think the over all material was really interesting and I look forward to reading more of his work.

Takashi Miike is known for mostly his more bizarre, violent, controversial output in the film world. Though interestingly, I don't think there exists a genre he's not attempted. At all. His film oeuvre literally spans the entire rainbow from extreme psychological bloodbaths to historical dramas to candy-coloured, cartoonish family films. But no matter what genre, unpredictable madness permeates most of them, which is not a bad thing in an era of overly cautious and formulaic films which treat the audience like an idiot. Miike never insults the audience's intelligence even if the content is offensive. My personal favourites of the few I've watched are the ones in-between, that are neither pure over-the-top taboo nor completely sombre.Agitator is a wonderful biography and analysis of Miike's films and their themes.I was fascinated by the author's interpretations of the more eye-searing insane ones, which I thought were smart and well-reasoned. I do think that the whole point of those probably were to be provocative, edgy, gratuitous, etcetera... but I agree that there lies an intelligent awareness of the audience and what will discomfort them the most using seemingly simple methods.If I'm truthful, the book Mes wrote on Shinya Tsukamoto was better and more balanced. Both filmographies, however, are of exceptional quality and totally unexpected. It's not everyday you find a thorough, well-written book on any filmmaker, especially not divisive cult-horror directors, so these books are a rare treat.Writing / Analysis - 4.5/5Material - 4/5General - 4/5

Filmspotting is a weekly film podcast and radio program from Chicago hosted by Adam Kempenaar and Josh Larsen. The show originally began as a progression from Kempenaar's film blog Cinemascoped. He and his friend, Sam Van Hallgren (then Sam Hallgren), who had become a regular contributor to Cinemascoped began brainstorming when interest in the blog began to wane. What resulted was a film-talk podcast. While the whole concept of podcasting at the time was relatively new, Kempenaar had gotten the idea from an article appearing in Wired, and he and Van Hallgren decided to give it a try. The fledgling show began production in 2005, initially under the title Cinecast, but was changed to Filmspotting in 2006 due to a conflict over the name. Shortly after, the show was picked up by Chicago's NPR affiliate station, WBEZ.
