Hmmm.First off I should declare myself as a card carrying long term fan of David Gemmell's work. I've read a dozen or so of his books and variously loved or very much liked them. Technically I like all the components of this book. It's post apocalyptic, its gunslinger-y. I'm not sure why the book didn't really work for me. Possibly it's having read Blood Song, Fool's Assassin, and The Name of the Wind back to back, setting me up for a book-hangover of epic proportions.Many of my Goodreads friends have read Wolf in Shadow and they give it a remarkably high 4.41 average!And yet...The book reminded me of The Gunslinger by Stephen King to some degree and came out only a few years after that work (which I loved). For some reason though I kept getting a Michael Moorcock vibe off this story - the writing and the density of new ideas seemed Moorcockian to me. I like Moorcock - though perhaps less than I did 30 years ago when I really loved his work.So, I'm still saying it was like these things I like but...OK a list:i) It's a short book with a hell of a lot going on. Strange new encounters rush at you. A lot of it felt quite brief without enough flesh on the bones to be real.ii) Lots of the communication between the major characters is by magic and that makes the world feel small to me and the distances arbitrary. The big bad and the big good basically teleport/hologram in for a chat whenever they feel like it and ... I don't like it. It feels random and removes tension.iii) I don't like the magic. The Sipstrassi stones ... I just don't buy into it, the ESPers (hate that name)Gah. I don't know. Of Man and Manta is an sf trilogy written by Piers Anthony. It consists of Omnivore (1968), Orn (1970), and 0x (1975). Omnivore has as its frame the investigation of the deaths of eighteen travelers from Earth to the planet Nacre. We see Nacre through the eyes of three surviving scientist-explorers: Cal, a blood-drinker, Veg, a vegetarian, &amp; Aquilon, an omnivore. Orn involves travel by the scientists &amp; mantas into a parallel dimension they dub Paleo, resembling the distant past of Earth, where they encounter dinosaurs &amp; an intelligent flightless bird called Orn. 0X involves the three scientists attempting to return to Earth from another dimension inhabited by hostile machines. Interlopers from other realities (using technology similar to that of the scientists' government) guide &amp; hamper the explorers. A secondary story tells of a multidimensional cellular automaton energy being named 0X &amp; its attempts to share living space with an infant human male, a fledgling creature of Orn's species, &amp; one of the manta-carnivores; their developing relationship leads to attempts to learn the reasons for their strange isolation from others of their kind, which eventually ties in to the story of Cal, Veg &amp; Aquilon.

An absolutely-inappropriate-for-children book that I read from cover to cover, again and again, as a boy in the mid-1990s. (In fairness to my parents, this really does represent the absolute nadir of what they let me get away with.)There are one or two stories I remember being rather harmless and wonderful - an alien comes to Earth in the form of a red parakeet, falls in love with a fellow parakeet, and is heartbroken when it dies; a cloud shaped like a human head mouths the words 'help, I am being held prisoner' when bickering holidaymakers replay their beach tapes to a deaf-mute translator - but even they're probably full of Anthony's creepy priapic paedo misogyny, too. (Even the cute story about toasters has its moments. Ugh.)

American drama television series from 1990–1991

Popular animated series featuring Scooby-Doo, a Great Dane who joins four California high school students (Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy) on many quests to solve strange mysteries. Each mystery is current and unusual and involves the group stopping someone from wreaking certain havoc on the world. The gang were always driving in the Mystery Machine, returning from or going to a regular teenage function, when their van develops engine trouble or breaks down for a variety of reasons. Their (unintended) destination turns out to be suffering a monster problem, and the gang volunteers to investigate the case. Eventually, enough clues are found to convince the gang that the ghost or monster was a villain. Invariably, the ghost or monster was apprehended and revealed to be an apparently blameless authority figure or otherwise innocuous local who uses the disguise to cover up a crime or scam. After proclaiming "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!", the villain was then taken away to prison, and the gang was allowed to continue on their way to their destination.

As they investigate further the mystery about the curse of Crystal Cove, they discover that a creature known as "The Freak of Crystal Cove" threatens and stalks anyone who comes near the haunted treasure. They uncover the Freak's true identity to be Mayor Fred Jones Sr. who reveals that Fred's true parents are Brad and Judy from the original Mystery, Inc. In the aftermath, Fred goes off to find his real parents and breaks his engagement with Daphne, declaring that "Mystery, Inc. is dead". Shaggy's parents send Shaggy to a military academy and Scooby-Doo to a farm. As Professor Pericles flaunts his two pieces of the Planospheric Disc, Scooby-Doo vows to get the gang back together and go after him.

The Boys is set in a universe in which superpowered people are recognized as heroes by the general public and owned by a powerful corporation, Vought International, which ensures that they are aggressively marketed and monetized. Outside of their heroic personas, most are arrogant and corrupt. The series primarily focuses on two groups: the titular Boys, vigilantes looking to keep the corrupted heroes under control, and the Seven, Vought International's premier superhero team. The Boys are led by Billy Butcher, who despises all superpowered people, and the Seven are led by the egotistical and unstable Homelander. An accident at a nuclear plant causes a radioactive water leak which ends up gruesomely killing a student at a nearby school after the tainted water reaches the drinking fountain and a gang of students turn into violent psychopaths by the runoff from the plant. Leaves from a radioactive marijuana plant located in the yard of the nuclear plant are smoked by a couple and the mutated drug shows itself to have potent aphrodisiac effects, leading the couple to have sex n later the girl immediately becomes pregnant and spits a little monster into a nearby toilet. The creature travels through the water pipes and lands in a barrel filled with radioactive waste, and mutates into a bigger creature causing mayhem in the school.

I could say that I love Dick, but that would be weird. I do very much enjoy Philip K. Dick's writing and though this is not one of his best, the "Pizza and Sex Rule" applies to him; ie. just as even bad pizza and / or sex is still pretty good, bad PKD is as well. And this is not bad at all. The first mistake that a new reader would make is to watch Blade Runner and expect a novelization of that film; it was LOOSELY based upon the book. I'm a big fan of the Ridley Scott film starring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer, but the movie diverged from Phillip K. Dick's literature early on. The book is far more bleak than the film, if you can believe that, and much more intricate and complicated. Blade Runner benefits from a simplified storyline. The author was far ahead of his time both in the complexity of his story and the perspective from which he writes. There are elements of Brave New World, I, Robot, and Dune; but the author has a unique voice and the story is an original. It is not an excellent work, as there are gaps and inconsistencies and many loose ends that are never tied in, but the concept and provocation are superb.One element of the book that was completely left out of the film was a sub-plot involving a Christ-like messiah and a faith system based upon what could have been a hoax. First published in 1968, this was one of his more theological based novels, and a trend that would continue steadily becoming more frequent and invasive until the end of his writing.A MUST read for PKD fans as well as SF/F fans period.
