As someone who grew up devouring the Redwall books, I was super excited to discover the Mistmantle Chronicles. However, this series is not just a Redwall knock off. The author has her own unique voice and presentation style and deserves full credit in her own right for an imaginative story.Urchin is a young squirrel discovered orphaned on the seashore during the night of the "Riding Stars" - basically a meteor shower. He is rescued and eventually taken under the wing of Crispin (another squirrel and the King's Captain). But when the baby Prince is found murdered, Crispin is accused of committing the crime and banished from the island. Urchin must find a way to rescue his Captain and prove his innocence before the real murderers take over the Kingdom!Though Urchin of the Riding Stars is written for a younger audience than Redwall, I highly enjoyed reading about all the inhabitants of Mistmantle. If you're looking for a sweet easy read filled with adventure, mystery, animals, and fantasy, look no farther!

I loved this series as a child, and just learned about books 4 &amp; 5!Omri receives a unique birthday present - a cupboard that his brother found. In conjunction with a beautiful key his mother had, Omri discovers that the key can magically transform any cupboard or trunk into a transmogrifier that turns plastic toys into tiny, flesh-and-blood humans.Though there are some cringe-inducing dialectical choices (the cowboy's un-enunciated English alongside the pronounless English of the Iroquois Native American), Banks pivots in political-correctness by book 3 and has Omri correct those who would treat his tiny people as less than human.

My heart is full.In a certain way, this book might be my favorite of the series, even though it is the darkest. The sheer heart and courage of these characters make me catch my breath. These true heroes face their darkest moment, and they do not fail. I love the way M.I McAllister seamlessly picks up threads from the first book and reveals that, even though certain villains are dead, their schemes were far reaching and the aftermath is just as dangerous. There’s also an Arthurian legend vibe as my darling characters search for a magical stone that can be held only by the true king.Every time I read this book my heart is full, and I am encouraged yet again that the Heart that died for me will never leave me nor forsake me.
