I know that there is a whole slew of people who object to reading adaptations and abridged versions of classics. And for a mature audience, I'm against abridged versions too..... but I've chosen to use adaptations, re-tellings and abridged versions of certain classics with my son as a first exposure.... I've done this with Homer's Odyssey and the Iliad - and he will tell you that the Odyssey is his all time favorite story. Mission accomplished - when he's older and ready to tackle Homer - he'll do so with fond memories and a bit of knowledge with which to work from...instead of feeling intimidated!I'm choosing to do the same thing with Shakespeare... my strategy will be to introduce a child's adaptation and then to watch a child-friendly production as an introduction to some of the Bard's works.... hoping that he'll grow up knowing that he loves Shakespeare...Bruce Coville's adaptation of A Midsummere's Night Dream was fantastic... the pictures were captivating and the wording gave just the perfect flavor as a first intro to this play! I look forward to reading more of his adaptations!

Burgess packs a lot into this incredibly short biography. It is a swift, almost whirlwind, account of Hemingway's life that feels like a runaway train that cannot be stopped. It is so short that you can read it in practically one sitting. Overall, you could say it's rather fitting that a biography of Hemingway be written in such a minimalist style. Burgess's humble foreword acknowledges that his is merely a brief sketch so I cannot fault him for lacking in-depth literary analysis, as some other reviewers here have expressed wanting. It is what it is and if you want something more, Burgess offers up his recommendations.I think Burgess offered just enough to pique my curiosity of Hemingway's other works. He often points out how the people and moments in Hemingway's life become integrated into the various literary works. I read this immediately afer "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and found myself even looking for ways Hemingway fit his own experience into the story. Burgess attempts to disentangle myth and man but still leaves us with some aura of mystery. I came away from the book both understanding why many people hate Hemingway and also feeling empathy towards him. A mark of a good book is one that prompts you to read more and I think Burgess achieved that.

This book won the 1997 Whitbread biography award, so my hopes were high. I knew little about the towering French genius of the Victorian era, the author of Hunchback and Les Miz, and I was curious about the sources of his genius. Well, it's an annoying book. I did learn a good deal about Victor Hugo's sexual proclivities (he was insatiable and omnivorous), the way he mistreated the several long-term women in his life, and his political vacillations (in a time when taking a stand was dangerous in France). Alas, the genius comes across as a thoroughly nasty, self-absorbed, selfish man -- who gave alms to the poor, but made sure everyone knew it. Who switched his political allegiances so many times that no one took him seriously after middle age, except the proletariat who went to their deaths several times because he egged them on to the barricades. And who abandoned his family several times at key moments, leading to (but not directly causing) the death of one of his daughters and the insanity of another. Not to mention his unspeakable, crazy brother. Another semi-victim of the Hugo juggernaut. But that's not why the book is annoying. That's why Victor Hugo turns out to be annoying. No, the book is annoying because it's badly written. It has all the vices of French prose -- playfulness, allusive- and elusiveness -- without any of the virtues -- clarity of thought, structure, or phrase. How it won a prize is a puzzle. I know a good deal more about Victor Hugo than I did before, but I had to wade through 500+ pages of sloppy prose to learn it.
