There are some terrible reviews of SH5 floating around Goodreads, but one particularly awful sentiment is that Slaughterhouse-Five isn't anti-war.This is usually based on the following quote. "It had to be done," Rumfoord told Billy, speaking of the destruction of Dresden."I know," said Billy."That's war.""I know. I'm not complaining""It must have been hell on the ground.""It was," said Billy Pilgrim."Pity the men who had to do it.""I do.""You must have had mixed feelings, there on the ground.""It was all right," said Billy. "Everything is all right, and everybody has to do exactly what he does. I learned that on Tralfamadore."For context, Mr. Rumfoord is an old military historian described as "hateful and cruel" who wants to see weaklings like Billy exterminated.On Tralfamadore, Billy was introduced to the revelation that all things happen exactly as they do, and that they will always happen that way, and that they will never happen any other way. Meaning, time is all at once. The aliens, incidentally, admit to destroying the universe in a comical accident fated far into the future, and they're very sorry, but so it goes. &lt;- passive acceptanceThe entire story up to this point has been about Billy, buffeted like a powerless pathetic leaf in a storm, pushed this way and that by forces entirely outside his tiny purview. He lays catatonically in a hospital bed after the plane crash and the death of his wife, and all the time traveling back and forth from Dresden where toddlers and families and old grannies and anti-war civilians were burned alive in a carefully organized inferno (so it goes), and Billy is about ready to agree to absolutely anything. It can't be prevented. It can't be helped.You're powerless, after a while. What hope have we, or anyone caught in the middle of a war, or even the poor soldiers who are nothing but pawns and children (hence the children's crusade), to influence these gigantic, global events? Therefore, Billy agrees with the hateful, the cruel Mr. Rumfoord, who is revising his military history of WWII, having previously forgotten to mention the Dresden bombing. Women and children, not evaporated instantly, but melted slowly by chemicals and liquid flame, their leftovers, according to Billy, lying in the street like blackened logs, or in piles of families who died together in their little homes. Incidentally, how can anything be pro-war or anti-war? Because being anti-war is a bit like being anti-conflict, anti-death, and anti-suffering. Is there a book that's pro these things? Is there a book that touches on the subject of war and is not against it?We don't support wars, though we are sometimes forced to accept them. Anyone who thinks that the bombing of Dresden was necessary is delusional.It's like saying, "yo, look how they bombed these innocents - that shit was wrong! Let's go bomb some innocents, too."That's the sad truth of it.

I've been meaning to read some Tank Girl for ages. Bill had these ones and dug them out for me. I have to say it wasn't what I was expecting. First of all the most amazing thing about the comics was that they were a mixture of colour and black and white in a single issue. I've never seen anyone do that before! I didn't think the comic format allowed for that. So i thought that was really cool. I did quite enjoy them. I liked the art work style. I liked how Tank Girl was both an attractive punk and kinda hideous at the same time. The humour just didn't always sit right with me though and I'm not such a fan of vinegette story telling rather than longer narratives. But I am curious enough to read more.

I enjoyed Tank Girl: The Odyssey immensely. That's all I can really say for certain of this very weird, very fragmented, comic reading... experience. It is an experience. A ride. A journey. An odyssey! If I had to pin down a core, recurring element of this wildly fluctuating spectacle of a book, it would probably be mania. Sheer, undisturbed, persistent mania. The book runs on pure energy, and doesn't skip a single beat in churning out joke after joke, gag after gag, scene after scene. The pacing is wild, the dialog skirts from being intensely sophomoric to providing high-brow, classical literature reference and observation at the drop of a hat, and the art, in Jamie Hewlett's recognizable, chunky, pop/punk style, is positively electric. If there's one thing Tank Girl has, it is, surprisingly, variety - though that variety all combines into a singular, very silly, very immature goal that ultimately comes off as far less ingenious than it perhaps actually is.It's a very particular 90s brand of juvenile hi-jinks - creative violence and swearing, along with cheeky parody, self-deprecation and allusions to popular culture, are combined with nudity, gross-out humour, farts, sex, and stinky, feces-smothered toilet humour, to creative a melting pot of everything society has ever looked down upon in comic books. It's all presented through the eyes of Tank Girl, a character I still, after reading quite a fair chunk of, can't pin down. She's either a punk feminist icon and hero, representing anarchy and sincere, shameless childishness... or, she's a cruel, self-serving parody of punk feminist icons and heroes, representing anarchy and shameless childishness by way of subtle, scornful, misogynistic mockery. I really have no idea. Her lack of respect for the core tenants of human interaction and society's rules of engagement are either to point out how cool that is (and it does look pretty cool), or to highlight how uncool it is (it also comes across as pretty dorky). To be honest, personally, while I hope she's a sincere attempt at progressiveness in female representation at this point, I think she could easily be the opposite. That would upset me deeply. Perhaps I'm employing a tad bit of wishful thinking.Ah, but is not pop culture what we make of it? And as Tank Girl has been wholly embraced by women the world over as a no-nonsense action heroine who follows her own destructive path, so too has The Odyssey. Tank Girl does what she wants, often at the risk of others - her stable of friends, Sub Girl, Jet Girl, and Barney, and a band of new followers, including a girl who is a sincere fan of her work, and three Irishmen who are not-so-vague and ever-so-unflattering caricatures of the three key creators of the book. They all have times to shine (her new followers, times to die horrifically at the hands of disturbing evils), and they lend a unique voice to the book that I find quite appealing. There's a dry wit to many of the jokes, with obvious gags often pointed out and derided within the gag itself; and the actual encounters the Tank Girl crew face are all so deliciously warped that they play out as a kind of vicious self-parody, so there's never really any legitimate tension - just guffaws-a-plenty, and a bit of action/adventure.The plot. Oh. For what it's worth, The Odyssey is a loose adaption of Homer's Odyssey (though, by admission of Peter Milligan, more closely mirroring Ulysses). Tank Girl needs to stop her kangaroo boyfriend, Booga, from signing a movie contract that would see him... well, I'm not sure. It's kept pretty vague as to why Booga signing a movie deal contract is in any way a negative thing. Tank Girl herself is fresh off of the "success" of her movie (yes, that movie), but she's in Ireland, and Booga is in Australia. So she rounds up her hearty crew and sets off for Australia. On the way they encounter danger and panic and shenanigans, from a pack of ravenous (and cannibalistic) film producers, to Tank Girl's dead mother who becomes very angry when Tank Girl fails to revive her corpse with magic farts, to their own selfish greed, to a hotel full of overbearing, religious zealot cyclops'. Who run a hotel. Called Cyclops Hotel. Those who recognize Homer's Odyssey will notice not just how similar Tank Girl: The Odyssey is (and pick up on the not-so-subtle analogs), but how strongly it insists on deviating from it, as well. Things just happen in Tank Girl, and The Odyssey is no difference. The jokes range from very clever, to very stupid, to clever in their outright stupidity (one cliffhanger ending sees Tank Girl stuck between saving her and her friends from certain death, or leaving a movie theater before the film is over, thus emitting a grievous social faux pas), and for every earned literary reference and ingenious little observation, there are twice as many dumps of utter inanity, designed seemingly to trip up the story from progressing, and confuse the entire flow of pacing. It's bizarre. Really bizarre.Obviously I enjoy Tank Girl: The Odyssey, or I would never have told you so in the opening sentence. As to why I enjoy it - or if I even should enjoy it - I really can't say. It does suit my bias towards clever approaches to stupid subject matters, it fulfills my daily quota of badass, anarchic women in comics, and it's so fast-paced and full of junk that there's never really a chance to reflect on whether or not the joke you just laughed at was worthy of a chuckle, or if it simply caught you off-guard in the searing sandstorm of lunacy. Either way, this is pure, unmitigated Tank Girl from start to finish, and if you don't know by now, you either love 'er or hate 'er. It seems I love 'er. Maybe it's because I'm Australian, and Tank Girl seems to embrace the best and worst of our deeply disturbed national attitude towards life ("I'm in hell!" Jet Girl protests, and, after Tank Girl explains they're merely on their way to Australia, she interjects, "there's a difference?") Or maybe it's just because of its unbridled commitment to reveling in its own ostentatious and joyfully idiotic filth. Either way, I love it - and I sincerely hope you can too.

I am not feeling much better about this second one. The first two arcs, I thought, were alright. They even seemed to have something interesting to say. Then we got to the diarrhea. Yeah. I didn't need that. Nor many of the things that followed it. There was one more arc that I thought was interesting, but again ... with so much shit (pun TOTALLY intended) I can't imagine that the glimmerings I got from those arcs were purposeful. I have to step back for a moment, because I can't say these comics are "bad." They are definitely not my taste. To me, the humor seems very haphazard. There is no reason for any of the events happening in the story. I dunno ... five more issues left. Let's see what insanity awaits. Scud the Disposable Assassin is one of the strangest comic books I've ever read, an certainly competes for the strangest that I own. In this (the first collection of issues), author Rob Schrab takes a screwy premise and drives it straight off a cliff into Wackyland.The initial premise is simple enough: a "Scud" is a disposable robotic assassin purchased from a vending machine. It is programmed to self-destruct upon completing its mission (to make the hit untraceable). One such Scud is activated and tasked to hunt down a monster (who ends up with the name "Jeff"), but discovers his own mortality by accident. Unwilling to commit suicide by completing his mission, he instead cripples Jeff and is forced to start taking other work as an assassin to keep Jeff's life support bills paid.This setup doesn't even begin to convey how strange the comic is. A better indicator is to describe Jeff itself. Jeff is a 10 foot pastiche of incongruous parts. Its "legs" are large muscular arms (ending in hands) with mouths in the knees. Its body is that of a lanky tiger with a squid strapped to it with leather belts. Its arms end in "hands" composed of an opposable thumb but mousetraps in the place of fingers. Its head is a huge three-prong electrical plug. It speaks entirely in quotes from films.As strange as Jeff is, it's par for the course. As a result, the absurd protagonist (who, we are told by the author on page 2, should be voiced by John Malkovich) plays the straight man to a deranged, dysfunctional world. The results are enthusiastically violent, cleverly referential, and sharply drawn in a distinctive black-and-white style.Scud isn't for everyone. Brimming with irony before irony was cool, Scud will appeal most to people who have seen too many action, sci-fi, and mobster movies but are smart enough to know how schlocky the stuff they enjoy is. In fact, Scud bears some striking thematic resemblances to Kill Bill (which came out a decade later), and would likely appeal to the audience of "people who enjoy the same movies Quentin Tarantino does." As such, expect violence. Scud plays out the way Frank Miller might interpret Looney Toons: with blood, dismemberment, and the occasional pun. It's difficult to call anything as goofy as Scud "gory," but it's certainly graphic.You're unlikely to find anything as wildly inventive and off-the-wall as Scud. While much of its weirdness is weird for its own sake, it's nevertheless a fun trip.

How was it that I had been blind to its existence all these years?”- Nawal El Saadawi,  Woman at Point ZeroI was told by a friend that the German title for this book is translated as “I Spit on You,” and it makes a lot of sense after you read the book, because that will probably be your reaction to most of the characters. This is my second El Saadawi book and I wish I’d written a review for the first book of hers that I read, The Innocence of the Devil, because I thought both books were excellent, similar in their approach and very powerful in how they portrayed patriarchy, sexism, hypocrisy, and misogyny.I love Firdaus, our protagonist, and I think she’s a character who’ll stay with me for a very long time. At the beginning of the novella we find her on death row for killing a man and as she recounts her story to a female psychiatrist who is sent to visit her. We learn more about her. And it’s shocking. It wouldn’t surprise me if many women are able to see themselves in Firdaus, despite the fact that we might not be Egyptian, Muslim etc, like she was. Parts of her story are surely the stories of many women.The tone of the book starts off so innocently and simply; the change in describing brutal incidents caught me by surprise. From every single man Firdaus encounters she experiences abuse or exploitation of sorts. Firdaus changes because of her experiences and we see how strong she becomes, despite encountering such awful things.Despite the tragic story, Firdaus has moments of agency and emancipation. This woman who nobody wants, who’s abused time and again, who isn’t helped when she should be, comes up with her own definition of truth based on what she sees and experiences, not what she has been indoctrinated with. El Saadawi exposes the hypocrisy in religious and patriarchal societies with men using tradition for their own purposes:  “I discovered that all these rulers were men. What they had in common was an avaricious and distorted personality, a never-ending appetite for money, sex and unlimited power. They were men who sowed corruption on the earth, and plundered their peoples, men endowed with loud voices, a capacity for persuasion, for choosing sweet words and shooting poisoned arrows. Thus, the truth about them was revealed only after their deaths, and as a result I discovered that history tended to repeat itself with a foolish obstinacy.”She compares and contrasts marriage and prostitution, and she is often very blunt about what she perceives to be the position of women in society:  “All women are victims of deception. Men impose deception on women and punish them for being deceived, force them down to the lowest level and punish them for falling so low, bind them in marriage and then chastise them with menial service for life, or insults, or blows.”But there is the hope when women like Firdaus realize the truth but also the power they actually have:  “How many were the years of my life that went by before my body, and my self became really mine, to do with them as I wished? How many were the years of my life that were lost before I tore my body and my self away from the people who held me in their grasp since the very first day?”And ultimately though the telling of Firdaus’ story, I found myself changed as well, and more understanding of Firdaus’ journey and evolution.  “A man does not know a woman’s value, Firdaus. She is the one who determines her value."
