This was a challenging reading experience, and I struggle to put into words why.I loved Maalouf's reflections on identity and cultural belonging, In the Name of Identity: Violence and the Need to Belong, to the extent that I read it with students several times. I admired his autobiographical work Origins, which offers an explanation for his deep understanding of the diverse strands that make up an individual personality, shaped by numerous family patterns, education and personal experience.I thought I would love his well-researched, brilliantly detailed account of the crusades from the perspective of the Arab world as well. It promised to deliver new angles on a topic I had already studied with interest from the more common European standpoint, giving me a unique opportunity to gain better insight into the other side of the story that features the origin of East-West, Islam-Christian clashes - with lasting effects reaching into our contemporary world and history writing.I had to force myself to read on however. On multiple occasions, I was about to break it off altogether. Why?It was not the fact that all names and events seemed strangely distorted, told without the overarching context I was used to. That was quite charming, actually, once I got used to it. I had no issues whatsoever with the narrative bias either, as that was what I expected and hoped for.What made me cringe, over and over again?The interchangeable actors in a play filled with shortsighted power struggles, hubris, greed, stupidity and violence. It does not really MATTER that the perspective has changed from a European to an Arab setting. The reckless, faithless, brutal rapists and killers are just the same on both sides of the conflict. Yes, it is true that the crusaders are guilty of invasion, and the Arab local community is innocent. In that respect, the Christian rulers and their followers certainly are more guilty than the defenders of their own territory. But the outcome for the narrative is the same. One sequence of treason, violence, cowardice and war after the other, with no end in sight. What that means for civilians, and most of all women and children, I do not want to describe in detail. Such a completely meaningless, utterly idiotic conflict, forced upon people by criminal kings and churches in Europe, carried out by armies full of violent, uneducated brutal men, claiming to be acting in the name of an all-powerful god. Both sides were convinced that they were divinely justified to kill and ravage according to their current political needs. The book was, to be short and precise, too depressing to make a rewarding read. As it focuses on the military aspects rather than on cultural questions, I missed the erudite and balanced prose that I am used to from Maalouf, and had to work my way through countless sieges, all quite similar, regardless of which side won, and which side suffered more - depending on occasion.I believe it is important for this book to exist, and to be read, especially by European historians, but it was hard - very hard - to digest.

Mrs. Brisby, a widowed mouse, lives in a cinder block with her children on the Fitzgibbon farm. The experiments performed on the mice and rats there boosted their intelligence, allowing them to read without being taught and to understand things such as complex mechanics and electricity. The rats and Mr. Brisby escaped from N.I.M.H. and came to live on the Fitzgibbon farm. The rats created a home for themselves under Mrs. Fitzgibbon's rose bush, creating an elaborate habitation of beautiful chambers, elevators, and Christmas lights. However, the rats are unhappy in their dependence on the humans, who they are stealing electricity from, and have concocted a plan to leave the farm and live independently. Because of her husband's prior relationship with the rats, they agree to help Mrs. Brisby move her home out of the path of the plow. However, the evil Jenner and his unwilling accomplice Sullivan, who wish to remain beneath the rose bush, yet plot to kill Nicodemus during the move.

For his role, Caucasian Australian Lazarus even went through a controversial surgical skin dying procedure so that he could convincingly play a black man. Production is not going well since rookie director Damien Cockburn is unable to control the prima-donna attitude of his three stars. Cockburn and Tayback decide that the five primary actors - Speedman, Portnoy, Lazarus, rapper Alpa Chino, and newcomer Kevin Sandusky - need to work together as a unit as did their real life characters. The five are placed in the middle of the jungle, and with only a map and their prop machine guns in hand, are asked to work together to battle through the stunt pyrotechnics in their way. What none of the seven of them know is that they have been dropped into a real life drug war led by the Flaming Dragons. It isn't until Speedman is captured by the Flaming Dragons and tortured that they all realize that what they believed was make believe gunfire and land mines was actually real life. As the four actors try to figure out what to do concerning Speedman's situation, all five go through their own journey of self-discovery. Meanwhile, the movie's megalomaniacal profanity spewing producer Les Grossman and Speedman's faithful agent Rick Peck argue about what to do about Speedman's situation. And Tayback inadvertently shows a little of his true self.

2013 documentary film on US covert warfare directed by Richard Rowley

This film is about a group of four teen offenders who go to the country for the weekend with two other youth workers. They end up at an old country house near the town of Mortlake in Yorkshire. After they clean up the house so they can stay there they all head in to the village for some well earned drinks only to run in to the local "town folk". The next day they go to a place that has old train carriages to collect some scrap metal when they again run in to the locals, but this time it ends up with one of the youth workers being hurt badly. They go in to the village for help but it turns out to be the worst thing they could have done. The locals aren't as friendly and welcoming as they thought.
