Very enjoyable suspense story. It starts with the murder of a young single mother who is found stabbed to death multiple times, her body mutilated. Her 4-year-old daughter, Haley, is the only witness to the crime, but Haley is shutting out the memories of what she saw. The story was fast-paced and told from multiple points of view. The crime scenes were grisly and the violence graphic. This was book 2 in Tami Hoag's Oak Knoll series, so there are a lot of familiar faces from the first book, Deeper Than the Dead. It had an interesting cast of characters, as there seem to be a lot of crazies running around Oak Knoll which made for a wide variety of suspects. I enjoyed the 1986 setting, before many advances were made with DNA, forensics, computers, etc. This book could be read as a stand-alone although there were many references to events that took place in the previous book, which means there will be spoilers from Deeper Than the Dead.

The companions travel a great distance, encountering various dangerous sea creatures such as sharks, anglerfish and jellyfish, in order to rescue Nemo from the dentist's office, which is situated by Sydney Harbour. While the two are searching the ocean far and wide, Nemo and the other sea animals in the dentist's fish tank plot a way to return to the sea to live their lives free again.

OZ chronicles McManus' (Terry Kinney) efforts to control the inmates of Em(erald) City as well as the drug trade and the violence. There have been many groups of inmates during the run of the show and not everybody makes it out alive. There are the gangstas (Adebisi, Wangler, Redding, Poet, Keene, Supreme Allah), Muslims (Said, Arif, Hamid Khan), Italians (Pancamo, Nappa, Schiebetta), bikers (Hoyt), Aryans (Schillinger, Robson, Mark Mack), Christians (Cloutier, Cudney), Latinos (Alvarez, Morales, Guerra, Hernandez), gays (Hanlon, Cramer), and a pile of others (the O'Riley brothers, Keller, Stanislovsky, etc.). And a great "everyman" character called Beecher offers a good look at a normal man who made one tragic mistake. Besides the regular inmates, there are guest stars such as Method Man, Luke Perry, Master P, Treach, etc. and a bunch of prison staff doctors (Dr. Nathan), a nun/psychologist (Sister Peter Marie), a bunch of guards--some honest, some crooked--and, of course, the warden, Leo Glynn. The whole thing is narrated and held together by inmate Augustus Hill, who provides the show with context and some sense of theme, and ties everything together nicely.

Earl is a low-life who buys a winning lottery ticket, only to get hit by a car, losing the ticket in the process. He then realizes in the hospital that his bad luck is the result of karma in which fate punishes him for all the rotten things he's ever done in his life; therefore, he then decides to dedicate his life to making amends to all the people he has hurt in his life.
