cummings remains one of my all-time favorite poets. My wife and I even had 2 cummings poems read at our wedding. I come back to this slim volume constantly, and occasionally reread it. The presentation is simple: just the poems, ma'am, just the poems. Poems are organized by the collection in which they originally appeared, with the collection's date. This collection is a great way to revisit some of my favorites ("somewhere i have never travelled,gladly beyond" and "if i have made,my lady,intricate"), as well as a great way to get to know different poems from all across cummings' vast output.

I ran into my friend Dan at the club last week, and he was drunk. So we talked Camus. We didn’t discuss Camus’s theories, or the fact that he avoided riding in cars and then DIED IN A CAR CRASH. We just talked about Camus in relation to Dan’s life and in relation to mine. The only really interesting thing about anything to me is how it affects me. That’s the honest truth. Dan and I agreed that an interest in Existentialism is kind of a stage in your life – like when you liked Pearl Jam or lived in a little house that had a name and seven other people living in it. We then agreed that a re-exploration of all things Existential is usually preceded by your significant other telling you to get bent. Later Dan taught me how to cure a salmon, and we decided to co-host a dinner party in the second week of April. I doubt we would have come to this conclusion without having read The Fall.

“He seemed to see, with a cartographer's eye, that string of swimming pools”If you were to read the summary of John Cheever’s “The Swimmer,” it might not seem very interesting. In our tale of suburbia, the protagonist, Neddy Merrill decides to take an 8-mile journey home using swimming pools. This absurd quest is much more than it appears. While Neddy styles himself a legendary figure and modern day adventurer, his perspective is repeatedly challenged when he pulls himself out of each swimming pool. “The Swimmer” reminded me of Albert Camus’ The Happy Death. The protagonists are both reaching into the unknown for something that transcends their day-to-day life. The narrator of The Happy Death is able to achieve his goal; however, for Neddy, it is outside of his grasp. Despite casual conversation and sociable drinks at this pool or that, he is losing something of himself that he can’t pin down. It is only at the end of the journey that Cheever fully reveals what he has lost. Loved the ending! 4.5 stars

It's circa 1959/1960 in the rural American south. A group of six bikers is heading to Daytona to watch the races, they having made plans to convene at a prearranged stop along Hwy. 17 so that they can ride down together. That stop - a town where no one would make the conscious decision to live - could be mistaken solely for a truck stop in being a proverbial blip along the road. Their stay is extended for what is estimated to be a day when one them, Hurley, has to make necessary repairs to his motorcycle, this delay which doesn't sit well with many of the other five in having to endure the boredom of the town. While some of the townsfolk they encounter see them as an injection of excitement in what is otherwise a proverbial backwater, most consider them no better than animals in not wanting to deal with them at all. One of the townsfolk, teenage Telena, hooks up with one of the bikers, Vance, she already used to danger of a different kind in being the daughter of an abusive father, wealthy widowed Tarver, who in some respects rules the town in regulating the flow of oil to the local service station. While many of the encounters between the bikers and the townsfolk have the potential to be explosive, it is that between Vance and Telena which may be the one, if any, to set off the fuse to the powder keg.

Iris can best be described as a wallflower. She begins her first day as a temp for the nondescript Global Credit Association by waiting in a chair for two hours. This sets the scene for her (mis)adventures with the other "corporate orphans", Margaret, Paula and Jane. Led by Margaret, they find subtle ways to lessen the ennui of corporate oppression. The tension escalates when the new permanent hire, Cleo, enters the picture.

Buck is a man-child who has lived his existence in a life of Romper Room, kindergarten collages, and lollipops. Last Days of Disco loosely depicts the "last days" at a disco palace, where drugs, sex, and weirdness ran rampant. The story centers around a group of friends who frequent the disco and each other. All the characters are searching for something to make their lives more fulfilling. Some are searching for everlasting love and some just want something different. As the disco is closed, they all wonder: can disco ever really be dead?

Queerness and queer horror — which is to say horror that is about or aestheticizes queerness, otherness, sexual deviancy, as experience, metaphor, dream, and nightmare — are embedded in the history of the genre, from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula to James Whale’s 1935 film The Bride of Frankenstein. From a masked killers (one of which uses a dildo knife) to genderqueer dolls, the films selected for this program elaborate upon and extrapolate from queerness not merely as identity but as aesthetic impulse, rooted in subversion, confrontation, camp, an understanding of queerness as a tool to challenge, or deconstruct, normative ideas in art and society. Drenched in blood, paranoia, and forbidden desire, horror is queer down to the bone.
