They had strong political beliefs, wanted to topple the imperialist establishment with their theological basis lifted from hard-core leftist/anarchist believers who thought theory was of little use; "the gun speaks" is one of their axioms.In short, a very charismatic leader - Andreas Baader - met Gudrun Ensslin - a preacher's daughter - and gelled together politically and as lovers. They adopted the feel of the changing times and extreme frustration over the fact that a lot of people talked but did nothing. They started fires in German department stores and conspired further.I think the very moment they recruited Ulrike Meinhof, at the time a respected and well-known political reporter and documentary film-maker, as she helped to spring Baader from custody and in the process killing a security guard, is the breaking-point where all was let loose for the RAF. Everything must go. The gun spake.From there, they went underground. And they went abroad, making sure that Baader-Ensslin could rule the band and that very little that was critique against them could escape unhurt - and that went both for people on the inside and the outside.The RAF assassinated, kidnapped, robbed and created propaganda and terror all throughout their maintenance; against popular belief, the group existed even after the suicides/murders in the Stannheim prison in 1978, when the founding members and additional members were found dead - except for one survivor.The author does a splendid job at remaining fairly objective while binding facts to the RAF's belief-system, thus creating a bird's-eye view of the entire matter. The book is mostly chronologically written, but starts off with the Stannheim deaths in a very strong way.Did the German government wire-tap the prisoners' cells during the night of their deaths? Did they in fact allow the guns that killed some of the prisoners to be imported? Did they know of a suicide pact and totally failed to prevent it? Were the prisoners in fact murdered or did they commit suicide? We'll probably never know.Aust has also been involved with the screenwriting for the film with the same name as this book, which I think is very good too. The book, however, delves a lot deeper and especially exposes Baader as a more two-faced and hypocritical person than I think the film did.The RAF did do something, which was their forté; the fact that they killed people at all is despicable, but didn't the government do the same in the process?All in all, this is a thoroughly interesting book which could be considered great company with Olivier Assayas' great three-piece documentary on Carlos Sanchez, titelled "Carlos".

I read The Fall of the House of Usher, William Wilson, and Hop Frog. All very interesting stories. I believe Edgar Allan Poe's purpose in writing these stories was to portray a strange array of madness brought through strange similarities. In The Fall of the House of Usher the narrator realizes when they are burying Madeline that she and Roderick are twins. They have that strange connection that makes Roderick realize his sister is not dead and that she is coming for him before everything crumbles. In William Wilson another person just like the narrator follows him around everywhere he goes until he finally snaps and kills them, only to find out he has killed himself. That one was the most intriguing due to it's sudden plot twist at the end. In Hop Frog although Hop Frog isn't exactly like Trippetta they are both dwarf size and it is because of what is done to her that Hop Frog snaps on the King and his royal court. The theme they all share is the madness the main character goes through due a traumatic event or because of someone close and very similar to them. Madness cannot only make a person mentally ill, but physically ill too. Roderick was affected greatly by his twin sister's death. Only to be traumatized even further by her later to the point of his death. The narrator William Wilson is so tired of competing with this other individual who is exactly like him and just wants to be unique and be the only William Wilson. The other William Wilson follows him wherever he goes and is his constant shadow, which drives the narrator mad and he ends up killing himself. Hop Frog is the only one out of these three that actually made it out of the story alive. He had a very heroic ending, but there was still death involved and madness of course.The stories were were written in a narrative style because of how everything happened in the stories. They had a chronological series of events that had a great climax and of course a resolution. They all had a very interesting way of unfolding that led to not only plot twists, but exciting yet terrifying events. This style is effective because reading the story and having it unfold before your eyes makes it a lot more interesting to read. Knowing what happens from beginning to end gives a great understanding to the underlying meaning of the stories also. In my opinion the stories were fantastic. They kept me intrigued and in suspense. I was just waiting to see what happened next. I have always been a huge Poe fan so they were right up my alley. I would definitely recommend these stories to any Poe fans or if people who like the Gothic Era of literature. I wouldn't really change anything about the stories because the way they are written and the elements that fall into place with them really give them that special something. Like always Poe does not disappoint.

I recently went to Las Vegas for the first, and probably only, time in my life. I hadn't read this book in years, and previously, it hadn't even been my favorite Hunter S. Thompson work. Thompson is dearly missed by many people, and on a personal level, I miss him deeply. He spoke to a true astonishment at the complete, unrelenting fuckedupedness of America and her politics, and he did it with a bite that was deserved and unmatched. He probably could have been a very rich super-novelist of popular, uninspired filth. He probably could have been a brilliant novelist of any kind. But he chose to do what he did, and he did it better than any of his generation. Like Mark Twain, he chronicled American stupidity in the tongue of his generation, and he captured it perfectly, from the insanity of the drug experience to the depravity of American politics. For years, no work of his stood out to me as much as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 or the Gonzo letters. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, to me, wasn't his best work. Then I went to Vegas. Suddenly, all the subtle differences between this and his other work made sense, and I realized that he had captured the true tackiness of the truest tacky city on the entire planet (though Dubai with their fucking Island fantasies are likely to take over soon). Fear &amp; Loathing in Las Vegas IS Las Vegas. It's a nightmare, a joke, a blunder of comical, cosmically-fucked proportions. It's not Sin City. It's where Sin goes to die when it's embarrassed for itself. It's where families go on vacations with ten-year-olds, children who get handed fliers for prostitutes. It's the living, pulsing, filthing embodiment of the Holy Dollar. It's sensory overload on a scale drugs can't equal, a place where you almost have to take a brimful of Valium and a pint of ether to feel normal and not feel utterly ashamed at the state of the human condition. It would make you want to blow your brains out if it weren't so goddamned fun, even if you're gay, you hate gambling and hookers make your brain itch. Yet you never, ever feel like it is evil or subversive or curious in any way. It's just about a buck, and every other blink reminds you of it. This is a place where Hunter S. Thompson could easily mingle with a law enforcement convention and not get noticed. This is a place where a lawyer could leave you with a hotel bill. One last job stands in the way of a new life; however, Wong is unaware that his female partner-in-crime is utterly infatuated with him. A man about forty years of age tells the story from when he was a teenager in upscale suburban Detroit of his and three of his friends' fascination with the mysterious and doomed Lisbon sisters. In 1974, the sisters were seventeen year old Therese, sixteen year old Mary, fifteen year old Bonnie, fourteen year old Lux, and thirteen year old Cecilia. Their fascination still remains as they try to piece together the entire story. The sisters were mysteries if only because of having a strict and overprotective upbringing by their father, who taught math at the girls' private co-ed school, and overly devout Catholic mother, who largely dictated the household rules. The story focuses primarily on two incidents and the resulting situations on the girls' lives. The first was an action by Cecilia to deal with her emotions over her life. And the second was the relationship between Lux - the sister who pushed the boundaries of the household rules most overtly in doing what most teenagers want to do - and Trip Fontaine, he who could have any girl he wanted but wanting solely Lux.
