I really have no idea how to describe this book, it was mesmerising. Richard, a British backpacker arrives in Bangkok and on his first night in a hostel is given a map that leads to a so-called Eden, a secret beach that few travellers know about. So with French couple Etienne and Francoise in tow, they try to find the island. When they do life is idyllic for a while, then cracks start to appear, and they find that their Eden isn't the Paradise it seems.I can't even pinpoint what it is about this book, that a simple tale of backpackers on an island beach could be unputdownable. But it is. It is that and so much more. Highly Recommended.

To me, bad taste is what entertainment is all about. If someone vomits watching one of my films, it's like getting a standing ovation. Thus begins John Waters's autobiography. And what a story it is. Opening with his upbringing in Baltimore ("Charm City" as dubbed by the tourist board; the "hairdo capital of the world" as dubbed by Waters), it covers his friendship with his muse and leading lady, Divine, detailed accounts of how Waters made his first movies, stories of the circle of friends/actors he used in these films, and finally the "sort-of fame" he achieves in America. Complementing the text are dozens of fabulous old photographs of Waters and crew. Here is a true love letter from a legendary filmmaker to his friends, family, and fans.

I could never write a review that would do this book justice. There are some amazing monomaniacal memoirs out there. For example The Dirt by Motley Crue, or John Lydon's No Dogs, No Irish, but then there is this. Kinski is either totally insane or an amazing liar. I don't know which, but the way he recounts his life and his sex life is something to behold. Why it is so difficult to get a hold of his two auto-biographies is beyond me. They should be perennial best-sellers. Just for any interaction he writes about with Werner Herzog is worth reading this book, and that doesn't take into account the wonderful wartime stories that he has, or his preteen sex life, that is more active than probably anyone's normal life. So great, so insane. Thank you Karen for bringing this book into my life!!!

 look we are best friends!okay now it is time to actually review the book. and im having an off day so im not sure what form this review will take, but im writing it and thats what is happening. i was trying to remember the other day where i was the first time i encountered nick cave. not in person, - i remember that quite well. before the above picture was taken i had tried, many years ago, to flirt on him and was rebuffed. REBUFFED! but the first time i heard his music. i remember quite well the first time i heard the smiths. or leonard cohen. or oingo boingo. and thats about all the music i know. but i cant remember my first nick cave. fascinating, right?? like i said - its an off day. but so the book. i liked it, but not nearly as much as and the ass saw the angel. which i love enough to maybe review later, if im feeing saucy. this book is very good, and i know a movie is in the works, and i can see how that would be good, maybe. but when he was chatting in the green room, maria mentioned the word antihero. and nick cave seemed genuinely surprised at this word being used in connection with this book. and that, in turn, surprises me. because if you read this, theres nothing really to fall in love with, character-wise. hes a pure, unmitigated asshole. and thats great, really, but he is nothing if not an antihero. and moments later, he tried to make a call on his cell, but was geting poor reception and kept saying "can you hear me now", which makes me cringe, and then said "never mind, ill just text you". to this technogrouch, that was unforgiveable. but still - best friends. i thank this book for making =me realize how close avril lavignes name anagrams to "vaginal". and i love that when i was reading this outside on the back stoop at work, some lady came by and tried to sell me makeup from her little suitcase, which meshed nicely with what i was reading, but not as nicely (or terrifyingly) as when i was reading the plague on the jmz subway platform at like 2 in the morning and no one was around and then a rat ran over my foot. that was pretty awesome. but so thats my review, sortof, and i cant even see what i am typing because goodreads.com is experiencing some kind of annoying glitch that is superimposing "formatting tips" over my little box here. (on my display device) so i dont even care. comment, vote, whatever... this day is annoying all-round. boo.

A really fun fourth-wall breaking tourist guide to the TP universe, the Twin Peaks Guide takes you on a tour of the city’s sights and sounds as if you picked up the book at the airport and planned on making the journey to the little hamlet. Chock full of insights into the universe, the characters, the restaurants, sights, foliage, wildlife, history, and industry of the area, this guidebook presents everything that the show doesn’t cover and almost works as a bible to the universe if one were planning on writing some more episodes or a fan fic of the area. I picked this up again as I am prepping myself for the new season. I read The Secret Diary, The Autobiography of Dale Cooper (both of these for the third or fourth time at least), and The Secret History of Twin Peaks (for the first time) already, and I am planning on listening to my Dale Cooper tapes audiobook again…once I find my tape player here somewhere. What was really interesting was noticing the overlaps between The Secret History of Twin Peaks and this guidebook, actually – honestly a lot of what is contained in here, albeit in a manner which is hidden without context, is the same material that is explained in the Secret History book believe it or not. Once could read the Secret History and find much of the same stuff, but contextualized WAY more, but this has some clues scattered about in neat, hidden ways. It was cool reading this again after the new book. It is a lot of fun, and perhaps the real magic is in the fact that it is almost like reaching into the television screen to pull out the guidebook and use it as if you were a character stepping through that fourth wall of the screen and examining what is happening in town. My ONLY complaint about the book really is that the pictures of the actors are definitely Hollywood-produced headshots/press pack shots rather than something that looks a little more like it belongs in a book like this… The illustrations, however, were great, and I really like the minutiae like the phone book section and advertisements.

With his brutal post-industrial music, theatrical makeup and controversial lyrics about serial killers and Satanism, shock rocker Marilyn Manson has stood as an icon for a generation of dispossessed teens. In a biography I am looking for an impartial presentation. I neither like hagiographies or those biographies that negatively skew facts. The author of this book chooses to present a preponderance of negative over positive assertions concerning the artist, his life and his art. By book’s end, given such a negative presentation, I no longer trusted anything I was told. Much reads as gossip. Often we are told opinions of those involved in disputes. Tell me, how impartial can these views be?!I by no means am stating that Picasso was an angel. He was arrogant, cruel and self-centered. Humility was a concept foreign to the man’s character. Sex was paramount, both in his life and in his art. When he grew old and couldn’t perform sexually and as physical infirmities mounted, one can easily imagine the effect this had on him. When he died at the age of 91 he was not thinking clearly, but who does? I feel that a biographer must take such into consideration if a balanced analysis of the subject’s personality is to be achieved. Picasso’s personality and his family circumstances are covered but not in a balanced manner. Picasso was an innovative painter, sculptor, ceramicist, printmaker, poet and playwright. He was always doing something new! He never stood still in his practice of art. In trying new art forms he looked at and listened to others, then broke all the rules. What he did, he did in his own way, and what he did worked! He expressed in his art an essence that few others could achieve. The book moves forward chronologically and all his different art forms are covered. We follow his paintings from the “Blue Period” to experiments with primitive art to different types of cubism to the “Green Period” to Dadaism to Surrealism and sexualism in art. And of course Guernica, not an art form but a monument of art expression. Along the way we follow his family, his lovers, his acquaintances and his communist ties. When I look at art I don’t want it explained, and certainly not by one who dislikes the art and who dislikes the person who made it. If the artwork doesn’t speak to you, then so be it. I feel strongly that art should be separated from the actions of those who create it. I can strongly dislike the behavior of an artist and yet still appreciate that person’s art. I believe Huffington intertwines the two.What I did like in this book is the author’s presentation of the other artists that Picasso rubbed shoulders with in Montparnasse and Montmartre at the turn of the 20th century, Paris of the Belle Époque era. I personally was interested in what we are told about Gertrude Stein, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Henri Rousseau, Alberto Giacometti, Guillaume Apollinaire, Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau, and Sergei Diaghilev. Interesting tidbits and lots about how each of them interacted with the others. I did point out that there is a lot of gossip to be found within the pages of this book. The nastiest portions focus on how the mistresses, wives, children and servants viewed one another. Such gossip doesn’t lead to a better understanding of relationships. People were devoted to Picasso. As he is drawn here, this is incredibly hard to believe. I see this as a major fault of the book. Picasso said, “It is not what an artist does that counts, but what he is.“ Surely this will give food for thought in observing Picasso’s own life. Picasso was a seismograph of his age. He lived from 1881 - 1973. He was tormented and filled with rage. He challenged and he shocked. One perhaps can rightly ask if in his art one senses heart. Maybe in some, but in others that is quite simply not the message Picasso is trying to convey. We are told that Huffington has interviewed several who knew Picasso and has researched documentation that already exists. The book is studded with quotes, but some of them are from unspecified sources. She has spoken to Françoise Gilot, one of his numerous mistresses and the mother of two of his four children. She has in fact written her own biography on Picasso: Life with Picasso. Personally, I would recommend reading that rather than getting the second hand references as they are presented here. The audiobook is narrated by Wanda McCaddon. She reflects through her intonation the feelings the author expresses in her lines. I think a narrator should help the reader understand what an author is saying, so I have no complaint about this. I must point out that to listen to the audiobook I was forced to slow down the narration speed to 75%. Only at this speed did it flow naturally. Only at this speed did it sound as people really do talk! At other speeds you will detect a distortion.

Photographs have trouble communicating the radiance of the colour in Klein's work, especially of the monochrome paintings. Of the work represented, the ANT series of body-painting transmits well enough, but the sculptures come out the best (especially S41, Blue Venus), thanks to greater scope for lighting and shadow to help convey some of the famous "hovering" of the pigment. Hannah Weitemeier contributes an essay from which one gets very little biographic sense of Klein, and only slightly more of a critical one of his work. The writing is often very woolly:Taken from their familiar context and reworked, the found objects were raised to the status of art. Yet unlike the American Pop artists, who in the 1960s would react similarly to man-made consumer products, Klein treated his finds in a way that placed his work in a typically European context of meaning. Whether prefabricated or natural in origin, each object was conceived and reworked in an attempt to lend it a dynamic harmony that would stimulate individual perception, and a recognition that things habitually considered part of the external world possessed the same fundamental structure and laws as those which govern the individual organism. In one form or another, each piece contained covert allusions to a reciprocal influence between the subjective and objective references of a self-contained artistic universe.In other words - I think - by infusing the artist's actions with the 'meaning' of a piece, it makes the viewer question the fault-lines between one's subjective experience of things, and those things' objective existence. Or maybe here, rather than questioning, it stresses the commonalities. So far, so Duchamp 101. But how is this a 'European context of meaning' rather than an American one? Strictly speaking, is this even context, or is it the 'meaning' derived from that context?Elsewhere, Weitemeier employs that old undergraduate's trick, word-count-padding tangential 'context' to be raised and then quickly dropped:Klein had learned the technique of gilding in London in 1949, and was awed at the potentials (sic) of this costly and difficult material. What especially fascinated him was the fragile nature of 'the exquisite, delicate gold, whose leaves flew away at the slightest breath.' For the medieval alchemists, the search for a way to make gold corresponded to a search for the philosopher's stone. Their attempts to combine chemically what they called earthly and heavenly elements, apart from the pragmatic aim of transforming base metals into the most precious currency, gold, were informed by a higher, metaphysical idea - that of enlightenment and salvation of mankind.But to return to Klein...Nothing is helped by John William Gabriel of Worpsewede's clunky translation. (Lines like "a few months later they were already able to mount a joint exhibition of recent pieces" radiate target language interference on phrasing.) Being unfamiliar with the Worpsewede name I gave it a quick search and it turns out to be an artist's colony in Lower Saxony. Though he has a few other non-Taschen credits to his name, John William Gabriel turns up nowhere else than in translators' bylines. It seems likely that Taschen, known for its cut-price publishing model, has created a pseudonym using budget translators to keep costs and royalties down. While Weitemeier seems to be a real person, it is still pretty difficult to find much other work by her or about her, and one assumes her freelancer fees would similarly have been low enough for Taschen's business model.

The story and works of beautiful human being who gave the world and his works of art so much of himself that there was nothing left for himself. His agony in living is clearly expressed in his paintings as well as his joy in the colours and the nature he tried to capture. The book is a tiny glimpse into a journey of madness, love, betrayal and genius. To see the world through Vincent's eyes is truely a wonderous experience but scary and overwhelming also. Some photos are included of his work over the years including Sunflowers and of course The starry night but some lesser known to me at least like Cafe terrace at night: Arles and Monmartre: Paris which is to me beautiful, simplistic and vibrant. I love this man who gave so much of himself to his art..... "I put my heart and soul into my work and have lost half my mind in the process" Vincent Van Gogh

An interesting, informative book, but mostly remarkable for the paintings, many of which are hard to find reproduced anywhere else. Interesting to know just how much Surrealism was a man's game (hey, it was the 1920s - 40s, course it was). But with the guys' creepy preoccupation with child women and all, the mature female artists got marginalized. Well, ha ha guys, Frida Kahlo's more famous then all of you now (except maybe Dali). But many other remarkable painters like Kay Sage and Leonora Carrington, are not known. This book is a treasure in itself. I'd never read it before, but it's always been a special book for me - I bought it at MOMA when I was 18 , with my friend Meagan.

Salvador Dalí was born Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí y Domenech on May 11, 1904, in Figueres, Spain, located 16 miles from the French border in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. His father, Salvador Dalí y Cusi, was a middle class lawyer and notary. Salvador's father had a strict disciplinary approach to raising children—a style of child-rearing which contrasted sharply with that of his mother, Felipa Domenech Ferres. She often indulged young Salvador in his art and early eccentricities.It has been said that young Salvador was a precocious and intelligent child, prone to fits of anger against his parents and schoolmates. Consequently, Dalí was subjected to furious acts of cruelty by more dominant students or his father. The elder Salvador wouldn't tolerate his son's outbursts or eccentricities, and punished him severely. Their relationship deteriorated when Salvador was still young, exacerbated by competition between he and his father for Felipa's affection.Dalí had an older brother, born nine months before him, also named Salvador, who died of gastroenteritis. Later in his life, Dalí often related the story that when he was 5 years old, his parents took him to the grave of his older brother and told him he was his brother's reincarnation. In the metaphysical prose he frequently used, Dalí recalled, \
  "[we] resembled each other like two drops of water, but we had different reflections." He "was probably a first version of myself, but conceived too much in the absolute."\
Salvador, along with his younger sister Ana Maria and his parents, often spent time at their summer home in the coastal village of Cadaques. At an early age, Salvador was producing highly sophisticated drawings, and both of his parents strongly supported his artistic talent. It was here that his parents built him an art studio before he entered art school.Upon recognizing his immense talent, Salvador Dalí's parents sent him to drawing school at the Colegio de Hermanos Maristas and the Instituto in Figueres, Spain, in 1916. He was not a serious student, preferring to daydream in class and stand out as the class eccentric, wearing odd clothing and long hair. After that first year at art school, he discovered modern painting in Cadaques while vacationing with his family. There, he also met Ramon Pichot, a local artist who frequently visited Paris. The following year, his father organized an exhibition of Salvador's charcoal drawings in the family home. By 1919, the young artist had his first public exhibition, at the Municipal Theatre of Figueres.In 1921, Dalí's mother, Felipa, died of breast cancer. Dalí was 16 years old at the time, and was devastated by the loss. His father married his deceased wife's sister, which did not endear the younger Dalí any closer to his father, though he respected his aunt. Assassin's Creed Odyssey is an action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft.
