I know that there is a whole slew of people who object to reading adaptations and abridged versions of classics. And for a mature audience, I'm against abridged versions too..... but I've chosen to use adaptations, re-tellings and abridged versions of certain classics with my son as a first exposure.... I've done this with Homer's Odyssey and the Iliad - and he will tell you that the Odyssey is his all time favorite story. Mission accomplished - when he's older and ready to tackle Homer - he'll do so with fond memories and a bit of knowledge with which to work from...instead of feeling intimidated!I'm choosing to do the same thing with Shakespeare... my strategy will be to introduce a child's adaptation and then to watch a child-friendly production as an introduction to some of the Bard's works.... hoping that he'll grow up knowing that he loves Shakespeare...Bruce Coville's adaptation of A Midsummere's Night Dream was fantastic... the pictures were captivating and the wording gave just the perfect flavor as a first intro to this play! I look forward to reading more of his adaptations!

Norma Lorre Goodrich’s main pursuit in “King Arthur” is to uphold the historicity of Arthur the man, as well as to identify the true localities of his kingdom. Traditionally, Arthur’s seat has been placed in southern England, but Goodrich builds an extremely compelling case for putting Arthur’s realm in southern Scotland and North Umbria. If you find ancient British place names magical, as I do, much of the drama of this book will come from Goodrich’s efforts to unlock the landscape of the King Arthur legends by combing through the medieval and renaissance iterations of these stories. Goodrich academically teases apart the extant King Arthur manuscripts to build her case, and just when things begin to become just a little too dry, she injects a whiff of Arthurian enchantment into her analyses. Examples of some of the details I found particularly exciting included: •	Lancelot’s name is most likely a frenchified phonetic translation of Anguselus, who was a Scottish king and blood relative of Arthur•	Guinevere is the ancient version of Jennifer, and Guinevere was probably actually named Guinhumara and was a fiercely bellicose Pictish queen with her own standing army separate from Arthur’sThis book is for you if you enjoy an Arthurian cocktail of academic sleuthery, etymology, and legend-cum-history.

The Illusionist (French: L'Illusionniste) is a 2010 animated film directed by Sylvain Chomet. The film is based on an unproduced script written by French mime, director and actor Jacques Tati in 1956. Controversy surrounds Tati's motivation for the script, which was written as a personal letter to his estranged eldest daughter, Helga Marie-Jeanne Schiel, in collaboration with his long-term writing partner Henri Marquet, between writing for the films Mon Oncle and Play Time.The main character is an elderly version of Tati, with hints of his character Monsieur Hulot. The plot revolves around a struggling illusionist who visits an isolated community and meets a young lady who is convinced that he is a real magician. Chomet relocated the film, originally intended by Tati to be set in Czechoslovakia, to Scotland in the late 1950s. According to the director, "It's not a romance, it's more the relationship between a dad and a daughter." Sony's US press kit declares that the "script for The Illusionist was originally written by French comedy genius and cinema legend Jacques Tati as a love letter from a father to his daughter, but never produced".
