In 1998 Professor Nick Cutter's wife Helen disappeared through a rupture in time known as an anomaly. To combat the anomaly threat, government officials James Lester and Claudia Brown form a research team led by Professor Cutter (in later series, Danny Quinn and Matt Anderson) with the aim of capturing the creatures and sending them back to their own time.

A group of animals have to leave their home, the Farthing Wood, which was destroyed by the people. They travel to the famous White Deer Park and want to make a new home there. Fox is their leader and Toad their guide. Also with them are Badger, a very old resident of the Farthing Wood, Owl, who is very wise and often helps them, and Mole, the little friend of Badger.

In this modernized version of the Conan Doyle characters, using his detective plots, Sherlock Holmes lives in early 21st century London and acts more cocky towards Scotland Yard's detective inspector Lestrade because he's actually less confident. Doctor Watson is now a fairly young veteran of the Afghan war, less adoring and more active.
