Re-read: 06.18.19My thoughts are the same as before. I love every piece of backstory and the little clues to the origin of the sickness. Such a well-written volume.Original Review:4 StarsDo you remember when I said in my review of volume 1 that I was intrigued by this graphic novel?Well, now I'm just fascinated by this world and this story.Volume 2: In Captivity is a darker volume. I feel like Vol. 1 was more heavy on the ambiance and in building up the setting, but this one is a much better crafted volume. Not only it expands a lot on the history of this world and the plague (also, Sweet Tooth possible involvement in its origin), but there are excellent character moments. It provides a perfect balance. There are many emotional and scary scenes for both Gus and Jepperd; and with the way things ended in volume 1, it was such a nice treat getting to know Jepperd. His desperation, his motivation.Through a mix of flashbacks and present story, that interlocks perfectly, we learn about the tragedies in Jepperd's life.It's extremely emotional seeing him trying to finally complete his quest and the sense of loneliness and utter loss after coming back home, but it is the perfect way to redeem his character. I must say, I adored some parallels in his storyline. I can help but root for him, he's our broken antihero.\

Just like with Jepperd, we get to learn more about Gus. Although Jepperd's is a much mature, tragic story, Gus's story is still a fascinating one. There's a great moment where Gus explores his childhood and the lessons of his father. Oh, what a lovely fellow. Gus's innocence and the hopelessness of the other hybrid kids breaks my heart, but it is one of the things that grounds this story, that makes me more emotionally involved.The artwork, like I said in my previous review, is perfect for this series. It's gritty, crude, it's one that won't let you forget the kind of world and the kind of people present in this story.Overall, this series gets better and better with every issue and Lemire writing is just great. He is definitely one of my favorite writers.

I've heard some bad things about this one, but the first volume really sucked me in! Now, whether or not it's going to continue to do so is up for grabs...Six very different teenagers go to a prestigious boarding school.\
  But mystery and danger lurk in the shadowy hallways!\
 Ok, so the gist seems to be that there is some (potentially ancient?) eeeeevil organization that for whatever reason wants to use and/or mold some of these students into...?MYSTERY IS MYSTERIOUS.And I loved every minute of it! Alright. I see a lot of complaints about the vagueness of Spencer's storyline but really didn't mind all the non-answers in For a Better Future because it was the first volume. However, I've heard through the grapevine that this entire run (so far) is an extremely ill-defined title, tends to reject the idea that a concrete answer might be good for the reader, and instead deflects every question with another question.If so, this will not make me happy.But I just can't help wanting to read more!

Sci-fi, fantasy, romance, adventure, humor, suspense, action, magic, inter-galactic war, space-opera... All at a perfect harmonious balance in a beautifully illustrated and visually captivating comic-book form with writer Brian K. Vaughan's usual wonderfully addictive storytelling and instantly likable, thoughtful characterizations. And everything combining in a rich, engrossing world of mythology mixing both Science-Fiction and Fantasy. What more do I need? Saga, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship... err I mean readingship. ^_^

Over the last couple years, I've talked a lot about how some things bother me in storytelling. One of the things that bothers me the most is when a child is put in danger in order to grab cheap dramatic tension in a story. Even worse is when a child is hurt/killed/threatened order to build character or establish something about the world.90% of the time it's lazy storytelling of the highest degree, and 9% of the time it's little more than emotional abuse. I think of it as roughly equivalent to fridging someone's love interest. Interestingly, Saga seems to be the exception to this rule for me. There are children in the story, in peril, and it feels real, but I never feel like the storytelling is cheap or making a bullshitty grab for my emotion. One of the many reasons this comic is amazing....

My favorite volume so far! The art? Stunning. The plot? A+.Despite it being one of the shorter volumes, so much happened. I think part of the reason this was so successful was the time jump. The past three volumes have all occurred back to back, and there wasn't much time for new obstacles to pop up. Volume 4 has a new villain who actually frightens me as well as new strain on Alana and Marko's relationship. Not to mention Sophie has grown up into a fierce little girl.Now, I'm not sure if this is really the best volume so far or if I've become more used to the vulgar and abrasiveness of this series, which has allowed me to enjoy the story more. Maybe both?I read the past four volumes in less than 12 hours (they are seriously addictive), so I'm taking a breather. But then watch out! I'll be marathoning the rest for sure.P.S. Can I please adopt Ghüs?
