Kokou no Hito (Japanese: 孤高の人) or The Climber is a Japanese manga series written by both Shinichi Sakamoto and Yoshirō Nabeda and illustrated by Sakamoto, based on a novel by Jirō Nitta. It was originally serialized in Weekly Young Jump from 2007 to 2012, with the 170 chapters later published into 17 tankōbon volumes by Shueisha. It tells the story of introvert solo mountain climber Mori Buntarō, partially based on real-life mountain climber Buntarō Katō, who is introduced to sport climbing after being transferred to a new high school and later dedicates his entire life to professional mountain climbing, keeping the ascent of K2's East Face as his goal. The manga won an Excellence Prize in the manga division at the 2010 Japan Media Arts Festival. It also won Best Seinen Manga at the 2011 Prix Mangawa Awards.

I chided myself that “No, you cannot buy another book you’ve never heard of just because it’s pretty” and I forced myself to walk past it to the section where the book was that I actually came for. However, I wandered back and picked it up and perused it a bit, shoved it back on the shelf and scolding myself again. Well….. I bought it, obviously. What a wonderful dystopian manga Deadman Wonderland Vol. 1 is. I flipped through it frantically. I wanted to know more, more….. MORE. And I still do. This volume is not a meal, this is a snack – and as tasty as it is I am STILL HUNGRY, DAMMIT!! Ganta finds himself accused of killing his friends and classmates, although he is innocent, and sent to an unusual prison. Incarceration at Deadman Wonderland is unlike anywhere else; it is a deadly game of cat and mouse. Together with his unusual “friend” Ganta navigates the new world he has found himself in and every time he turns a corner it just keeps getting more strange. I’m positive that I still have no idea what is going on but bring it ON!!

Reading this right on the heels of Getter Robo Devolution provides a nice contrast. Whereas GRD felt a lot more violent, this one felt more like the beginnings of a family drama that just happens to feature violence. Any man whose father is an "alpha male" can relate to Shinji. He doesn't know how to please his father but still wants his approval. Shinji has his coming of age moment inside the Evangelion but his father is still a distant prick. The art is softer than that of GRB, which fits in with its more sensitive subject matter. The battle scenes were clear and the characters were expressive. The designs of the EVA and the angels were memorable. I'm not prepared to call them iconic just yet but I still have thirteen or so more volumes to read. I'm really curious about the future of the series. There's a little sexual tension teased between Shinji and Captain Katsuragi. We'll see where that goes.I enjoyed this volume quite a bit. Hopefully the used bookstore has the rest of them. I'm getting the hang of this reading right to left business. Four out of five stars.
