This one turned out to be a nope for me. Not the worst idea behind the story, but the narrative is rather blurry and plain. Loyalists are not horrible, yet they lack character development. Word Bearers are my main problem here, they are portrayed as a total chiche. Zero depth, they are nothing more than mustache twirling villains who only want to do evil shit. Also they are ZEALOTS. I swear I haven't heard the word zealot (and it's variables) as many times in my entire life as the author uses it in this book. Synonyms, dude! Use some synonyms! The story is not important to the main plot of the series, I would not say it completely terrible, but rather just unnecessary. Gained nothing from reading it.

I think I connected more with James Swallow's writing than any other writer that I have read in the Warhammer 40K universe, and as a result this is probably my favorite of the Horus Heresy novels, so far. I say so far because there are a shitload more books and it seems like every one I read becomes my favorite. This series is brimming with memorable and captivating characters and Deathguard Captain Garro in this one continues with that tradition. One man clinging to honor where none is to be found and staying true to himself and his brothers while oaths and allegiances around him are disintegrating. These are amazing action novels dripping with emotion and sentiment that also sometimes piss me off because of the double-crossing and backstabbing, even though by now I should know what to expect. This one starts off with a Rashomon-like vibe in that we get different perspectives of things we've already experienced. But not once was I bored or felt like it was an unnecessary retread of previous events. Everything was still fresh and exciting and by the time the new stuff came into play I had a greater appreciation of what was going on because of the added info. Seriously though, the Emperor Protects! What a series, what an amazing bunch of authors, and what an overall story this is turning out to be. Straight impressive!

The opening trilogy of the Horus Heresy saga ends with a blast, as the fall from grace of the Warmaster is complete and the setting turns for good in the grim and bleak one trademark of Warhammer 40000 universe.The battle of Istvan III is a long one, longer than all the ones in the previous 2 books packed together, an epic and bloody tale of death and betrayal like an ancient greek tragedy.The ending is one of the bleakest ever and when you finish the novel you just can't wait to read the following ones.The heresy is revealed and nothing will be the same again.Let the galaxy burn.

Still not sure if this book is better or worse than first one but it's still a bloody good fun. Writing in this book is notch bellow first one. So far I got the impression that Abnett is better writer than McNeil, his dialogs and characters where more enjoyable. On the other hand story in this book is at much more interesting place. Horus rising was more of prolog while this book deals with events that lead to Horus becoming aligned with Chaos and starts setting the stage for the main events and great civil war to follow. We finally get to learn more about gods of chaos, emperor and see how deep corruption has spread through Imperium. Again there are some well written fights and I especially liked how adequately disgusting are descriptions of Nurgle's (God of death, decay and disease) forces. Warning don't read that part before meal.

The Horus Heresy is an ongoing series of science fantasy set in the fictional Warhammer 40,000 setting of tabletop miniatures wargame company Games Workshop. Penned by several authors, the series takes place during the Horus Heresy, a fictional galaxy-spanning civil war occurring 10,000 years prior to the far future of Warhammer 40,000. The war is described as a major contributing factor to the game's dystopian environment.
The books are published in several media by the Black Library, a Games Workshop division, with the first title released in April 2006; as of October 2018 the work consist of 49 published volumes, with more in the pipeline.
The series has developed into a distinct and successful product line for the Black Library; titles have often appeared in bestseller lists, and overall the work has received critical approval despite reservations. So on the one hand (i.e., the overly hairy, knuckle-dragging one), this is Manwich-sized chunk of meaty, SF gun-porn dripping with sweat and oozing locker-room musk. HOWEVER, on the other manicured, latte- holding hand, this is a quality, well written tale with surprising character depth and a layered plot with real complexity and an unusual amount of nuance for a popcorn page-turner. At the risk of a DUH moment, let me point out that this is Warhammer 40000 tie in. I knew nothing about the Warhammer 40K universe before picking up this book…nothing. Therefore, if you’ve thought about checking out the series but didn’t know where to begin…TA DA…you have found your entry vehicle. If you haven’t thought about checking out the series, keep reading and you may change your mind. Here’s a quick back-story and plot summary...\
  BACK STORY \
This story is the first of a series that takes place 10000 years before the main Warhammer 40K events and explains how the galactic civil war (known as the Horus Heresy) got started. It’s the 31st Millennium. Thousands of years ago mankind scattered from Earth in a great Diaspora and populated the stars. For the last 2 centuries, the Imperium of Man guided by the iron-fisted, blood dripping  benevolent hand of the immortal Emperor has been conducting the Great Crusade in order to (1) reunite all of the various groups of humans (whether they want to or not) and (2) exterminate all alien life from the galaxy. Assisting the Emperor in his violent conquest mighty endeavor are the Space Marines, Seven and a half foot tall, genetically enhanced, immortal super soldiers in battle armor that would make Boba Fett full of dark green envy. Chief among the Space Marines are the ruling “Primarchs,” NINE FOOT tall genetically enhanced, immortal super DUPER soldiers who eat bad-ass and crap awesome. \
  PLOT SUMMARY\
The Emperor has unexpectedly left the front lines of the Great Crusade and returned to Earth (maybe for some celebratory rape and pillaging). In his place, the Emperor has raised his favorite Primarch, Horus, to the rank of War Master and put him in complete control over the mission and the other primarchs. This development does not sit well with some of the other 9 foot nasties and schemes, plots, rumors, conspiracies, machinations, cabals, ops and maneuvers ensue. We following the Great Crusade under Horus through a series of conquests while learning about the back-story of the Imperium and watching the Space Marines in action (some very, very cool scenes by the way). At the same time, events begin to unfold that set the stage for the conflict that will develop as the series progresses, leading eventually to the split between Horus and the Emperor and the beginning of the great civil war. \
  THOUGHTS\
This book is a blast and I had a lot of fun reading it. However, it was also quite a bit more and that’s what I found surprising. While there are certainly a number of stock characters and not everyone gets evenly developed, the main players are drawn with considerable depth and distinct personalities. This is not exactly an easy thing to do dealing with soldiers that physically are almost identical. In addition, the exploration of religion and philosophy and the arguments on these themes from multiple viewpoints added a nice layer to the plot. The writing is certainly better than what I anticipated and was of high quality. Abnett has a crisp, easy flow to his prose and is able to write both with humor and the darker emotions as called for by the narrative. I was impressed enough with his writing that I will seek out other books he’s written as I enjoy his style. Finally, I thought the idea of the Museum of Conquest (i.e., a huge starship where examples of every alien race exterminated are preserved for posterity) was diabolically cool. Didn’t have anything to do with the story, but was just one of those concepts that add to the overall back-story and that I found clever. Overall, this is highly entertaining. This is one of those that if you think you would enjoy it based on the plot description or the subject matter, than I am confident that you will. It is an easy, breezy read loaded with action and enough depth to raise it above the norm.4.0 stars. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
