I recently went to Las Vegas for the first, and probably only, time in my life. I hadn't read this book in years, and previously, it hadn't even been my favorite Hunter S. Thompson work. Thompson is dearly missed by many people, and on a personal level, I miss him deeply. He spoke to a true astonishment at the complete, unrelenting fuckedupedness of America and her politics, and he did it with a bite that was deserved and unmatched. He probably could have been a very rich super-novelist of popular, uninspired filth. He probably could have been a brilliant novelist of any kind. But he chose to do what he did, and he did it better than any of his generation. Like Mark Twain, he chronicled American stupidity in the tongue of his generation, and he captured it perfectly, from the insanity of the drug experience to the depravity of American politics. For years, no work of his stood out to me as much as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 or the Gonzo letters. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, to me, wasn't his best work. Then I went to Vegas. Suddenly, all the subtle differences between this and his other work made sense, and I realized that he had captured the true tackiness of the truest tacky city on the entire planet (though Dubai with their fucking Island fantasies are likely to take over soon). Fear &amp; Loathing in Las Vegas IS Las Vegas. It's a nightmare, a joke, a blunder of comical, cosmically-fucked proportions. It's not Sin City. It's where Sin goes to die when it's embarrassed for itself. It's where families go on vacations with ten-year-olds, children who get handed fliers for prostitutes. This is a place where no questions get asked because no answers would make sense, and the only thing profound about any of it is that you know, on a gut level, that all the oil used to produce all the plastic used to build that city no doubt funded an island shaped like Australia that was built off the coast of the UAE over the weekend. This novel will never cease to be important, and one day, as a cultural artifact of a forgotten culture from a forgotten nation, it will be one of the most important anthropological pieces in existence. Call me old fashioned but I think that there is far too much pop hopping going on in America these days. It's disgusting, revolting, quite possibly illegal, and then they turn around and turn it into a children's book? What's next? Leaving two unsupervised children alone with a giant cat? An elephant wedging an egg in his butt? Non-traditionally colored eggs and pork products? A Christmas-thieving scallywag? A fox wearing human undergarments? Oobleck? That just has to be filthy. Where does it end?

Ron Barrett’s illustrations are extremely creative and gorgeous, especially when he illustrates the actual family’s life in black and white while the illustrations of the town of Chewandswallow is shown fully in color, which truly brings out the creativity of the make believe town. I also love the illustrations of the different kinds of food that falls from the sky, especially of the images of a dozen hamburgers falling from a storm cloud as it looked quite unusual.All in all, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” is a truly brilliant book for children who are food lovers and just loves book about pure imagination! I would recommend this book to children ages five and up since the book might be too lengthy for smaller children and there are some intense scenes with the falling food covering the town that might scare younger children.\

Poe. Ugh! Nevermore! Just kidding. Sort of. I’ll always read the great stories over and over again. They are, to my mind, essential parts of American fiction, and foundational material when considering the history of the Weird Tale. But the life of the man, after reading Kenneth Silverman’s biography, now holds for me little interest. Biographer’s can of course get their subject wrong, or even lose it by making their book a literary hit job (a method Poe would of appreciated – as long as the subject wasn’t himself). But in Silverman’s case, the tone is neutral, leaning sympathetic. The approach is largely a Freudian one (an approach I’m not crazy about), but in Poe’s case, there’s no denying he represents a target rich environment. His actress-mother (reportedly a very good one), died when Poe was three. His actor-father (a lousy actor, but a roaring good drunk), had already abandoned the family ship – never to be seen again (weird how that fact echoes Stephen King’s childhood). Upon the mother’s death, the children were split up, with young Edgar, now a charity case, raised by the Allans of Richmond, Virginia. The step-mother is sweet enough, but the step-father, a successful businessman, is something of a cold fish, who grew colder as the years went by. Clearly the hyper sensitive Poe craved affection and stability. John Allan wasn’t too good on the affection, and as Poe grew older, Allan was dutiful only up to a point, providing Poe with something of an education at the University of Virginia. But the party life for Poe intervened, and his step-father would never provide him with enough money (according to Poe) to succeed.What follows is a number of false starts for Poe, where he tried to get traction in life. Meanwhile the relationship with his step-father kept deteriorating. Poe’s boozing, up to this point, is largely speculation. But around page 108, it’s a reality. Poe tries West Point, does fairly well, but again runs up the tabs, while his step-father keeps him on a short leash. Poe deliberately flunks out, and the final break with Allan occurs.We are now getting to the serious writing part of Poe’s life. He moves to Baltimore (home of the Poes), marries his 13 year old(!!!) first cousin (the “13” part of that was shocking (great balls of fire!) even back then), and starts writing in earnest. This was a time of numerous magazines in America. Poe’s stories and reviews peppered a number of them as he moved from one editorship job to another, but the big money never came. Along the way he made a LOT of enemies. Poe was a savage critic, ripping other writers and poets over such things as bad grammar and plagiarism. Charges, Silverman points out, that could also be leveled at Poe. With Poe there is always a whole lot of projecting going on. In addition, and I found this odd, Poe is always arguing for art and beauty in literature, and yet you have him cranking out these horrific and grotesque tales.At about the mid way point in Silverman’s book, Poe has written most of his major stories. His wife, Virginia, who he clearly loved, is dying from tuberculosis, and Poe is rapidly disintegrating as both person and literary force. Oh, despite everything he’s done to others, he’s still respected as a writer, but he’s a writer suffering from writer’s block. Throughout this period the Poe family (Edgar, Virginia, and Aunt “Muddy”) are living on the edge of poverty. Silverman lingers over this stretch of Poe’s life (the last four years) for too long. Upon Virginia’s death, the reader is given detailed biographical descriptions of Virginia’s potential replacements, which kind of throws sand into the momentum of the book. And compounding this search is Poe’s never ending literary feuds, his boozing, his scrambling for money. It’s a cycle that keeps repeating itself. He’s a sad figure, true, and horribly unlucky, but not a nice one. On the subject of Poe’s alcoholism, Silverman tries to stick to the facts, which are murky at best. His Aunt “Muddy” maintained that the problem with Poe was that he couldn’t handle much alcohol. I think anyone looking at the pictures of Poe throughout his life can see that he could handle quite a bit. The physical decline is that apparent. His “mysterious” death, in the end, doesn’t seem all that mysterious.

Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.

McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. McMurphy and the other inmates band together to make a rebellious stance against the atrocious Nurse.

Much like Lester's infatuation, Ricky immediately becomes infatuated with Jane; he considers girls like Angela as ordinary. The entry of Angela and the Fittses into the Burnhams' lives ultimately leads to each of the players confronting what is truly in his or her heart.

Following a truck hijack in New York, five criminals are arrested and brought together for questioning. As none of them are guilty, they plan a revenge operation against the police. The operation goes well, but then the influence of a legendary mastermind criminal called Keyser Söze is felt. It becomes clear that each one of them has wronged Söze at some point and must pay back now. The payback job leaves 27 men dead in a boat explosion, but the real question arises now: Who actually is Keyser Söze?

In the dystopian world of 2027 London, humans have been incapable of reproducing for 18 year for an unknown reason, meaning the imminent extinction of the species. Lowly government bureaucrat Theo Faron, once an activist, is approached by the Fishes, deemed a terrorist group, led by his ex-wife Julian Taylor, whom he hasn't seen in almost 20 years, since their marriage disintegrated after their infant son Dylan's death during the 2008 flu pandemic. Although the Fishes did use terrorist means in their on-going revolution against the state in the fight for immigrant rights, Julian vows that they now garner support solely by speaking to the people, and she wants Theo to use his connections to get transit papers for a young immigrant woman named Kee who needs to get to the coast. Although initially reluctant to do it because of the difficulty, Theo is able to grant Julian this favor, however with the change that he now needs to accompany Kee on her journey. As Theo and Kee progress on that journey, Theo learns more and more about what's going on, including the reason that Kee needs to get to the coast, the fact that no one in the group knows if their end destination even exists, and that his and Kee's lives are in greater danger than he believed when they started the journey. But Theo's sole mission becomes to help Kee at any cost for the survival of the species.

Eventually, enough clues are found to convince the gang that the ghost or monster was a villain. Invariably, the ghost or monster was apprehended and revealed to be an apparently blameless authority figure or otherwise innocuous local who uses the disguise to cover up a crime or scam. After proclaiming "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!", the villain was then taken away to prison, and the gang was allowed to continue on their way to their destination.
