The son leaves alone and a truck driver gives him a ride to Koktebel. However, his aunt has left for the summer.

He stays at a local hotel run by a group of strong, fun-loving and educated women. There also lives an eccentric professor, who wants to find a unique butterfly that lays eggs only on lambs' tails. If Yaro does not find a wife within a year of his father's death, the fortune will be passed to his distant relative Mary. Therefore, Mary's mother Helen came to the Carpathians with her daughter and does everything she can to stop Yaro from marrying. In the mountains, Yaro meets a Hutsul girl Ksenya, who seems to embody everything his father told him about Ukrainian women. The two fall in love. Yaro needs to rethink his plan and considers staying. This very year the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine will take place.

Max Fischer is a precocious 15-year-old whose reason for living is his attendance at Rushmore, a private school where he's not doing well in any of his classes, but where he's the king of extracurricular activities - from being in the beekeeping society to writing and producing plays, there's very little after school he doesn't do. His life begins to change, however, when he finds out he's on academic probation, and when he stumbles into love with Miss Cross, a pretty teacher of the elementary school at Rushmore. Added to the mix is his friendship with Herman Blume, wealthy industrialist and father to boys who attend the school, and who also finds himself attracted to Miss Cross. Max's fate becomes inextricably tied to this odd love triangle, and how he sets about resolving it is the story in the film.

Constructing this film through random scenes, director Harmony Korine abruptly jettisoned any sort of narrative plot, so here we go: Solomon and Tummler are two bored teenage boys who live in Xenia, Ohio. A few years ago, a tornado swept through it, destroying more than half the town and killing the same amount, including Solomon's father. The film, from there, chronicles the anti-social adventures these two boys have. These include sniffing glue, killing cats, having sex, riding dirtbikes, listening to black metal, and meeting a cavalcade of quirky, bizarre, and scary people. These include a man who pimps his mentally ill wife to our anti-heroes, three sisters who play with their cat and practice becoming strippers, a black midget fending off the sexual advances of a troubled man (played by the director Harmony Korine), a 12-year-old gay transvestite who is also a cat killer, Solomon's mother who seems to be the only glimpse of sanity, two foul-mouthed six-year olds, and most importantly, a nymphlike skateboarder who walks around town wearing pink rabbit ears.
