I guess you already know from my previous review that Terry Deary is one of my favourite authors, because he knows how to retell history in a laid-back and funny way. Now I'm going to talk about a historical period that began to interest me since I have learnt about Beowulf and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in my English Medieval Literature class. Though Romantic writers tried to reinvent and paint the Dark Ages in pinkish shades, it's pretty hard for me to understand how come courtesy, beautiful love poems and songs could live side by side with religious dogmatism and lack of basic hygiene, two causes that triggered the plague and many other bizarre diseases. According to Measly Middle Ages timeline, one of the most despotic, bloodthirsty and ignorant historical periods, from my point of view, stretches from post-Roman England, to the time of Alfred the Great, the Norman Conquest, the Angevin rule, The War of the Roses, to Christopher Columbus' discovery. In this book you can find out how people lived in the Middle Ages, how women and children were treated, what rules they had to obey, what kind of clothes and accessories people wore and how monks lived. You will also read about the Norman Conquest and the feudal rule, the Angevin Dynasty, the Black Death and inefficient medieval remedies, odd facts about food and drinks and so on. If you wonder which chapter I found the most interesting and intriguing, the answer is Rotten Religion. In the Middle Ages, people's ignorance and naivety were exploited by monks and priests, who forged all sorts of holy relics and other items which apparently cured any illness. For example, “Saint Apollonia is the patron of toothache, thus she could cure your tortured tootsie-peg. (...) Hundred of monasteries had a tooth from her mouth. Big mouth? No, simply another miracle, the monks explained. Henry VI of England collected a ton of them” (Loc. 908-911).If we think about Medieval schools, the monks and priests were the only teachers of the time. Life in the countryside, as well as in towns, was very hard, therefore, many small boys and girls were sent by their parents to join the church as monks and nuns. Here, the author reveals the letter of a boy, who has been studying in a monastery and the way he describes his daily routine: harsh discipline, an exhausting schedule not fit for a child no older than 8 or 9, firm teachers, scarce food, fasting, praying and a lot of Bible reading. I don't know about you, but when I read this letter, it occurred to me that Medieval school is as bad as Victorian school.Towards the end of the book, Terry Deary writes that in Tudor times life began to be slightly better and people believed that the crude and Measly Middle Ages seemed very far away; however, if we look through the newspapers of our day, we may notice that those horrible times have not ended completely just yet.http://elitere.ro/measly-middle-ages/

I thought this was an excellent book.Up until this book my sole experience of Terry Deary was a free CD off a cereal packet--I think it was bits from Vicious Vikings--read by Deary himself. I wasn't impressed. OK, a wee bit of history was coming through. And it was entertaining. But it was hard to weed out the bad puns and jokey padding.I've revised my opinion of him based on The Woeful Second World War. Although it doesn't really give you a clear chronological overview of the war, it achieves other worthwhile aims remarkably well:1) Deary gives you some idea of the scale of the war, no mean feat: of the true global nature of the war, of the unimaginable number of casualties both military and civilian, of the atrocities, of the heroism, of the hardship.2) Deary does an awesome job of representing people as people: some good, some bad, some a little of both, but never simpy baddies or goodies based on nationality or credo. A good example is the way he deals with the firebombing of Dresden, describing the entire event as though it took place in London. He identifies the real city at the last minute--AFTER you've imagined it all taking place on home soil (for us readers in Great Britain). And, oh, whoops. We were the baddies this time.The obvious baddies, the individual crazy minds capable of committing unthinkable evil, are not spared. They're ridiculed and scorned and condemned. But Deary never lets you map the sins of any lunatic individual onto his or her countrymen simply because they share a nationality--or even because they share a dogma.Martin Brown's excellent illustrations help a lot, I think, to maintain the neutrality and the ordinariness of civilians. It's a book aimed at kids, of course, and I think it's really easy to look at the people pictured here and think of them as your neighbors, or your schoolmates, or your gran.As with many British kids' books focussed on WWII, it's a bit lacking in Pacific Rim info. I keep hammering into my own American children (who have grown up in the UK) that yes, there WERE concentration camps on American soil in which normal American civilians were imprisoned based on their Japanese heritage. (Ok, Manzanar Does Not Equal Auschwitz. But it's still a violation of human rights.) And somehow the atomic bombs and their aftermath have not made it into my daughter's cultural literacy as this did into mine. But I'd still recommend this book as an excellent overview and intro to the horrors and heroics of the Second World War.The book's final image is a vignette showing two figures in silhouette: a child apparently wearing a GI's helmet, holding hands with a bareheaded man who may be the soldier whose helmet the child wears. They're walking through a scenic landscape with an intact, pretty village in the distance, and the child says in a speech bubble: "Why is it that the ones who most need to remember are the ones most likely to forget?"

Through Terrible Tudors I entered Terry Deary‘s world and, to this day, this book is still the one I have enjoyed the most. However, I’m sure there are many Horrible Histories volumes that await to be read and reviewed, and I bet those will be as fascinating as the one I’m going to talk about here.The Terrible Tudor timeline stretches from the end of The War of the Roses to the last day of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign. Besides the Tudor dynasty, you will read about life and death in Tudor times, including awful doctors and remedies that didn’t work, school and rules, crimes, thieves’ slang and punishments, “terrible Shakespeare” (this is how Terry Deary gratulates the English bard), theatre, the mystery of Christopher Marlowe’s sudden disappearance, witches and superstitions, strange food and endless banquets, Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada, life for women and so on.Before revealing an interesting aspect I found in the chapter entitled Terrible Shakespeare, I cannot restrain myself from writing some peculiar facts about Queen Elizabeth I (or Gloriana, a term my headmaster taught me in high school). The English Sovereign was very ugly, had very bad teeth, a quick-temper and bathed only four times a year. Are you surprised in a bad way? Oh, but her majesty was cleaner than King Louis XIV, who took only three baths per year.Now let’s leave the filth behind – there’s a lot of that in Tudor England anyway – and return to Shakespeare. I won’t bore you with Shakespearean insults, because you might already know some of them from the multitude of articles found on the internet about this subject; but I’m sure that you haven’t heard of Shakespeare’s curse. Yes, King Tut is not alone when it comes to curses. Some people speculate that plays unknown to us might be buried with Shakespeare’s body, but nobody had the courage to open the tomb and put the curse to the test. Have I stirred your interest a little? Here is the epitaph the bard wrote himself:BLEST BE THE MAN THAT SPARES THESE STONESAND CURST BE HE THAT MOVES MY BONES (Loc.665)In the end, Terry Deary asks the reader if one wants to live in Tudor times. Are we thankful that we live in a different and better era or do we agree with the history books that the Tudor period was the “Golden Age of Good Queen Bess and Jolly Old Henry VIII?” (Loc. 1540)http://elitere.ro/terrible-tudors/

Never in my life did I imagine history could be so much fun! I loved how Terry talked about the Celts but still kept the book easy, understandable, and most importantly fun. These Horrible Histories books are intended for kids, so history is easier on them, but let me tell you, adults can enjoy them too. I learnt so much! And I never felt bored or anything. I mean, I've always liked the Celts, but not every book was easy or nice to read. And this one provides a really good picture of the Celts, feels very complete, and it includes everything from where they lived, to the culture, costumes, calendars, all of it in nice digestible chunks. I think I'm going to like these books very much, and there's a whole bunch of them.

I think this is a great book, my parents and grand parents lived through some of the facts written in the book, it is brutally honest and educational, I feel it helps teach us to respect the past and not try and airbrush the parts of our history or heritage we do not like. History is there for us to learn from, it should teach us respect for everything the people from the colonies or the slave trade have offered to make Briatain so Great, we should all be grateful top those races who were taken from their homes and families to be brought to England to build our amazing cities and palaces that we enjoy today. Embrace, Remember and Respect!

This history book describes the more gruesome side of the Stuart period. It tells why some Stuarts ate toads, snails and fleas, which king picked his nose and never washed his hands, and who wore fish on their feet. Facts about the revolting Roundheads and ghastly Guy Fawkes are given.I really didn't enjoy this book it's so far my least favourite it's not that it wasn't good or the facts wasn't fun it was purely down to the fact that the stuarts and the stuard era was very boring. It was the time of Protestants pretending to be Catholic and if you know your history all the stuarts were all protestants and they was very boring and sad lot of people every thing was sinful. And to start off the stuard era we had the parliament bombing and the birth of Guy Fawkes night who wasn't even the ring leader of the attempt he was just the one caught and was killed because an idiot of the group sent letters to members in parliament not to come so pretty much tipping off the royal guard but hay at least we now have bonfire night in the UK. The stuart period was a dirty and cruel time and as you would exspect horrible now as i mentioned above the book is fun im just not a fan of this period in time is all but as always i reccomened it to all history buffs young and old. 3/5 stars on goodreads 65/100 Ginger points

I absolutely LOVE this book and the Horrible Histories series. I use to watch the horrible histories show and that really got me into history when I was little. But then forgot about it when I got older. And then in 6 grade when there were the social studies classes, I really got into history again. I just find history really interesting, I like knowing what our ancestors did on this planet, what they did, what achievements they made and a bunch of more stuff like that. I also like this book because it is littered with funny and weird facts. I strongly recommend this book to anybody who likes history or gory facts.

3.5Of all the Horrible Histories books I own, I was mostly excited to read Vile Victorians because some of my favourite writers belong to this period and because the 19th century is fascinating to me. With these ideas in mind and with child-like anticipation, I picked up Terry Deary’s book hoping to learn new and disgusting things that happened during Queen Victoria's reign. In the Introduction, Terry Deary writes that there are two kinds of histories: the horrible history and the glorious history. It really depends on the teacher if one chooses to relate the truth about that certain period or one is carried away by the great deeds of the remarkable people from the past. Also, the author warns the reader that this book is not suited for sensitive persons; therefore: "If you have a weak stomach then don’t read it or, if you have to read it, then read it with your eyes closed." (Loc. 27) Now, this is the funniest disclaimer I’ve ever read. However, I think that such a warning would have been necessary before the first chapter of Horrible Histories Gruesome Guide: London too because that book really grossed me out.The Vile Victorians' timeline stretches from Queen Victoria's coronation in 1837 to her death in 1902 and the author highlights the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of this historical era. In this book, you will read about: Queen Victoria, Victorian childhood and its hardships, Victorian schools, games, Victorian literature, aspects of Victorian life (towns, work and funerals), strange food, Victorian army, villains and so on.Although I was very excited to read this book, it didn't impress me as much as I’ve expected to because I already knew some of the information about Victorian Britain from the Horrible Histories TV show I watched a few years ago. Indeed, there are a lot of shocking facts that you probably didn't know and some are very hard to believe, but if you read at least one of Charles Dickens’s novels, you will notice how hard life was for the poor and for the children living in London and in other parts of Britain. Small kids were forced to work in warehouses or in mines for many hours, putting their health at risk and their lives in danger for very few money. On the other hand, Victorian schools weren’t any better either, because teachers were very harsh and the pupils were usually punished for insignificant reasons. Another topic I’ve found both interesting and sad was the way girls were selected to become maids in the Victorian household and the schedule a maid had from the moment she was awake to her bedtime.Besides Terry Deary's jovial and witty style, I enjoyed the way he mocks writers playwright and poet for the excessive melodrama found in their works and he also gives some examples, including a small excerpt from Dickens' novel The Old Curiosity Shop. There are also a few stories that will break your heart and question the sanity of adults and human nature in general. In the end, Terry Deary concludes that the Victorian age wasn’t overall that bad because Britain had electricity and cars at the turn of the century. The author believes that the following quote from A Tale of Two Cities would have described Victorian Britain perfectly, not only France and its tumultuous Revolution: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way."(Loc. 1300)

In this, another howling success for the series, famous villains like Rob Roy, Dick Turpin and Blackbeard, who all became folk heroes over time, are given the once-over by the sharp-penned Deary as he tells the truth about their lives of crime, leaving little doubt as to what they were really up to when they were on the run.  From poor hygiene and terrible food to a country overrun with body snatchers and thief-takers, the poor old Georgians didn't stand much of a chance in a country run by unsuitable politicians and less than stable monarchs, and Gorgeous Georgians wastes no time in taking a stab at this seedy side of Georgian life. --Susan Harrison

They where also pretty disgusting in some of the things they did, how they made beer will make you not want to drink another pint again! What they did was take the woman of the village and chew yeast and spit it into a pot and do this over and over till all the yeast was gone then let it fament for a few days and then drink it

The 'Horrible Histories' series of books are, without doubt, one of the most imaginative ways to introduce KS2 to history. The combination of easy to read text and cartoon style graphics is ideal for the younger reader, enabling the easy absorption of important historic information in a fun and entertaining way. Horrible Histories - The Blitzed Brits is an excellent summation of day to day life in London and elsewhere doing the aerial bombardment of the early years of the war, and the experiences of London during the days and nights of the V1 doodlebugs. The book's style is light hearted but thoroughly engaging and gives the reader an understanding of life from the perspective of ordinary civilians, rather than the fighting soldier on the front line. Illustrator Kate Sheppard’s art perfectly matches Terry Deary’s text making the book both enlightening and easy to follow. The book contains a wide variety of facts and figures to aid a child’s understanding of daily life, but also a range of stories of real life experiences, including the lives of the young evacuees, the effect of rationing, the blackouts and a rather interesting section on rhymes and poetry of the time. The book includes short quizzes, memory prompts and small ‘knowledge tests’ throughout the book. All in all an excellent read.

With this childhood as a foundation, Chiron may have a predetermined path in life, one that will only be magnified in terms of its problems when he reaches his difficult teen years when peer pressure affects what he and many of his peers do, unless he follows Juan's advice of truly making his own decisions for himself.
