Sometimes I just need some Sophia Bennett. She’s the quintessential favorite aunt or cherished friend that can be counted on to alleviate a funk. Sneaky, clever and witty, she is the ultimate introspective author for me.At a blush Sequins, Secrets and Silver Linings looks to be a light, quick read packed with friends, fashion and fun. Ms. Bennett cheerfully gives us that. The charismatic cast engages in witty and quite funny conversations, particularly over Ben &amp; Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream. Nonie is bold in her in improvised, innovative couture, while sweet Jenny tries to walk the red carpet walk as an emerging, yet sadly suited starlet. Edie grounds the trio, focusing on Harvard entrance and her exponentially growing blog.With three teen girls centered in the story, of course we can expect boy crushes, hopes (realized and dashed) and heart-break. Admittedly consuming in real life, Ms. Bennett politely puts this in perspective reminding the readers that “looking for love” is truly only a very small part of life for these brilliant, talented young ladies.The aforementioned alone, told in Ms. Bennett’s compelling, captivating tone, would make for a fantastic read, but that’s not how Ms. Bennett rolls. Rather, she shows the side of teens that is often overlooked. Crow, the ridiculously talented, young African girl designer is understandably complex and quiet. Her father forced her to flee the war zone to live with an aunt she barely knows. Attention naturally shifts from somewhat trivial items to actual issues. The brutal rebel group, The Lord’s Resistance Army is still active and believed responsible for the kidnapping of Crow’s older brother Henry. As the friendship develops between Crow and three gal pals, horrors that were studied in History class become someone’s every-day life. Passionately livid and personally offended, as only a teen can be, Edie rallies her friends to help Crow compete in a coveted fashion-designing contest, simultaneously taking to her blog to raise funds for the Invisible Children and try to find out what became of Crow’s older brother.Sequins, Secrets and Silver Linings was exactly what I needed. The fascinating fun and ever changing dynamics among teen girl friends was delightfully distracting. The sheer determination, righteous indignation and swift action taken by these young folks against the LRA helped center me with hope and inspiration, because Ms. Bennett never lets me down.

Samantha Montgomery (Hilary Duff) or "Sam", has a rough childhood with her father dying in an earthquake and a new stepmother with two awful daughters. But on the bright side, Sam has an awesome best friend named Carter (Dan Byrd) and an e-mail relationship with a guy named Nomad. One day, Sam gets an e-mail from her Nomad saying that he wants to meet her in the middle of the dance floor at their high school Halloween dance. She accepts the invitation and glides into the room wearing the best outfit ever. Her Nomad takes her outside where they share a romantic dance together and Sam realizes that her e-mail friend is the most popular guy in school, Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray). She runs back to her stepmother's diner before she knows she went to the dance and drops her phone on the way. Austin finds it and starts a search for his Cinderella.

Four best friends start high school. Each one is unique and likes their own thing; Chloe joins the soccer team, Sasha joins the cheer leading squad, Jade is part of the math club. While the other girls hang out with their chosen crowds, Yasmin is left all alone. When Meredith, the most popular girl, sees this she automatically knows they are trouble. After years of not talking to each other Jade and Yasmin speak a few words in the restroom but Yasmin doesn't have the courage to tell Jade she misses her. The four girls are reunited when they are sent to detention for causing a food fight. The reunited foursome find out they are not invited to a huge party given by Meredith. Worse, Chloe finds out that her mom has a job serving food at the party. They are forced to work for Meredith. At the party, Meredith decides to expose Yasmin's secret (her dancing and singing with a face mask.) When Yasmin's brother starts doing a dance and everybody joins in, Meredith is humiliated. When Meredith accidentally gets thrown into the pool she calls the four best friends "bratz." The girls decide to be part of the talent show to win a scholarship. Meredith is always the one who wins, yet the "bratz" are prepared to take her down. Meredith renews her threats to Yasmin; if she continues preparing for the show, Meredith will expose her friend's secrets. Yasmin decides to call everything off. In the end, the girls do the talent show, and boldly tell everybody their secrets which turn out not to be so bad after all. The girls win and each end up with their respective crushes. The girls decide to give Chloe the scholarship. The movie ends with the girls walking down a red carpet.
