Wabi-Sabi: For Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers

Some books are one-day reads, one-sitting reads, etc. This book was a one-bath read. Our bath has lost almost all its enamel. It scratches my bum. Very Wabi-Sabi. My phone has a crack I refuse to fix. I like to slide my finger along smooth glass of the phone and feel the rupture. Very Wabi-Sabi. As I read this book I thought of a couple things. First, myself. I AM Wabi-Sabi. One only needs watch me bathe, swim, run, walk, sit, type, etc., to realize I am asymmetrical, scarred, broken, fixed, and broken again. I am not just the echo of impermanence, I am the valley, the river, and the clouds of impermanence. Oh yes, very Wabi-Sabi. Second, it reminded me of a recent trip out to the Western Catskills to see a friend of mine. He lived in the poorest county of New York state. The barns were in disrepair. Trees were growing through 100-year old mowers. Fields were unplowed. Roads were unmarked. I couldn't get vey good reception. It looked like I had driven into a sacred burial ground where Victorian homes went to die. It was BEAUTIFUL. Very Wabi-Sabi.Abraham Lincoln? Our most Wabi-Sabi president. Detroit? Our most Wabi-Sabi city. Anyway, the book was small. It was a bit silly, but still possessed something. I can't mock it too much. And what I make fun of still brought me a certain delight. A partial, fractured state of grace. I'll take that too. Very Wabi-Sabi.Now I'm going to just go microwave myself some tea.
