Thieves of Blood

2006Tim Waggoner

3.8/5

Thieves of Blood has everything that I absolutely love in fantasy novels. The overall story is actually rather simple and straightforward, but the environment and characters really make it a fantastic reading experience. Eberron is a universe created by Keith Baker. It's very similar to Forgotten Realms, but it tends to be a much darker, almost goth-like universe. The creatures in Eberron are far more vicious and take on eerie traits to create magnificently sinister environments. That being said, Thieves of Blood never loses sight of its somber ambiance. With the first page, you are thrust into a bloody introduction of the characters and the last page rounds out the novel with more brutality. It is violent but eloquent in its fluid presentation. The characters are all very interesting, with backgrounds that give them a decent amount of depth. One of the things that Waggoner does superbly is create a comfortable and natural chemistry between everyone, even the people who hate each other/are trying to kill each other. Nothing is forced or repetitive, which makes the novel a very easy and quick read. If I didn't have midterms, I would have read this in one sitting (again).I fell in love with this book the first time I read it and I discover some new things each time I go back to it (even little tiny things). It's the first book in a trilogy that has become my favorite for all-time and I recommend this to anyone who is interested in a quick, decent fantasy story. Nothing short of five out of five. \ \
