Books like The Island of Dr. Moreau

The precursor for "Lord of the Flies", the successor for "Frankenstein" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde" and the forerunner for every later concept addressing the ultimate question: what makes a man, and can he really be deemed absolutely separate from his baser, animalistic tendencies? And which is stronger? The harsh juxtaposition between Dr Moreau and his creations seems to suggest that the closer the former creeps to his ambition of creating mankind with his superior intellect and practice, the further he draws away from basic human tenets of empathy and morality.
