Skinny Bitch

2010, J.D. Kindle

3/5

This book has a ton of good information for those who want to convert to Veganism and eat foods with natural ingredients, but reading the book itself was some what torturous. Have you ever been to Denny's, and your buzz has worn off, but your stoned friend who is generally unemployed is also wired off Ritalin and caffeine and chain smoking, and he's totally conspiracy theorizing at you, swearing, getting all excited, and condescending you with all sorts of questionable material? Well, this is how I felt reading the book and then researching their resources. The authors had some great help compiling information into short, condescending chapters that beat you over the head the same way their sources, like PeTA, do. I was not particularly charmed by this. Then, they had a chapter that warmed up to you and gave you the warm fuzzies, right before walking you into their food list and ingredient suggestions, and then their research resources. I will likely hold onto this book for the last chapter or two, as I want to try some of the natural products they suggest. I find it ironic - conventional food is baaad, but they love organic processed food - that is okay. Though they explain heat and processing destroy nutrients. They also endorse sea vegetation - is this not from polluted waters? It's a good book for Food Psycho Vegans to use for appealing to the masses who are unaware of where foods come from and the processed foods they are eating. I am not stupid, and I don't like authors who treat their audiences as if they are stupid. The authors are also not nutritional specialists and it shows. I think I would like this book a bit better without the insulting holier-than thou tone and conspiracy theory bull. They should have stuck to legitimate medical and nutritional journals and authoritative research instead of propagandizing, hypocritical cults like PeTA, other special interest groups, and websites as information sources.
