Animorphs "RM" is an exciting series for young adult readers about five teens who are given the power to "morph" into any animal they touch and then to absorb its DNA. This high-interest series is currently a successful television show and will be sure to intrigue even the most reluctant readers.

I could say that I love Dick, but that would be weird. I do very much enjoy Philip K. Dick's writing and though this is not one of his best, the "Pizza and Sex Rule" applies to him; ie. just as even bad pizza and / or sex is still pretty good, bad PKD is as well. And this is not bad at all. The first mistake that a new reader would make is to watch Blade Runner and expect a novelization of that film; it was LOOSELY based upon the book. I'm a big fan of the Ridley Scott film starring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer, but the movie diverged from Phillip K. Dick's literature early on. The book is far more bleak than the film, if you can believe that, and much more intricate and complicated. Blade Runner benefits from a simplified storyline. The author was far ahead of his time both in the complexity of his story and the perspective from which he writes. There are elements of Brave New World, I, Robot, and Dune; but the author has a unique voice and the story is an original. It is not an excellent work, as there are gaps and inconsistencies and many loose ends that are never tied in, but the concept and provocation are superb.One element of the book that was completely left out of the film was a sub-plot involving a Christ-like messiah and a faith system based upon what could have been a hoax. First published in 1968, this was one of his more theological based novels, and a trend that would continue steadily becoming more frequent and invasive until the end of his writing.A MUST read for PKD fans as well as SF/F fans period.

I've read fantasy novels most of my life and the ultimate-evil-that-threatens-to-rule-the-world calibre of story (ala Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings) starts to get old after awhile. So in comes Mary Brown whose plucky heroine Summer (they're all plucky if they're women), is a Cinderella who's gone out in the world to bring a hunky, yet haughty and crippled nobleman back to his faraway home. She does this with the help of some animals she's adopted along the way, which she can talk to with the aid of a magic bauble! The second book in this collection follows Summer as she poses as a boy and travels the silk road (in the footsteps of Marco Polo) in search of her true love. The third book is set in 1800's London and is a quest for the new heroine (who is also plucky, my my) to find Summer's dragon egg which was such a big part of her quest centuries ago, and the heroine's own search for a larger place in the world. First off are the women in this book; seldom in fantasy have I read such capable, warm, compassionate, and fully fleshed women ever being heroines (they don't just act like men with boobs - they act like women). Second is the realism; instead of just putting hunks of cheese and bread in their satchels and sending them off for months on the road, Brown lets Summer actually plan meals and run out of money and mend clothing - all in the hopes of keeping her charming nobleman alive so he can fall in love with her (she wises up eventually, don't worry). Putting those small mechanics of the story in really makes the difference and puts the peril in this much less ambitious fantasy. It's the second book that is truly breathtaking as it follows Summer's resolve halfway around the world, although the ending is like a punch to the gut - other reviewers say the same. The third book is merely satisfying as there isn't as much risk or reward and much of the story is retracing the steps of the second book. I would higly recommend this book to young women or anyone who isn't hung up on epic fantasy clichees.

Do you ever read terrible novels and stick with them to the end? Have you been happy while thinking, “This is so terrible; I know I could do better”? That’s what Dragonne’s Eg by Mary Brown put me through.Set during Victorian times, a poor but self-sufficient teacher in London named Sophy learns that she’s now the sole heir to a tiny horse figurine and weird, sizable egg (it’s a dragon). If she can return the egg to its rightful place on the Blue Mountain in China within a year, she will inherit a country manor that would make the perfect place for an orphanage to help all the underprivileged children she teaches. To make sure she gets there in a year, her dead uncle’s lawyers send two lackeys (they had job titles, but I forgot them). The horse figurine reveals itself to be a Ky-Lin, a servant of Buddha who must help others on earth so he can return to his master. He’s magical. He’s got wicked linguistic skills and “Sleepy Dust.” And when her favorite pupil mails himself to the manor before she leaves for China, Sophy has her traveling crew.The lackeys are easy to confuse. At first, one seemed like a version of “Rebecca’s favorite cousin,” Mr. Jack Favell. The other, more gentlemanly. But as the louse became more normal and the gentleman gambled and drank, and the two sounded the same in description and dialogue, I assumed they were twinsies. I think one may have actually been Irish.The favorite pupil’s dialogue runs the gamut from Cockney to good grammar and back again. I know he’s in school, but he practically changes overnight into a star sentence constructor. Honestly, I confused him with the dog from previous novels in this set of books. The dog and the boy were both constantly hungry and a Mary Poppins Dick Van Dyke version of British. The dog was a favorite character of mine, but because it’s 500 years later in this last installment of Mary Brown’s quartet of books, he can’t be alive. Instead, Sophy saves a cat that claims to be a Chinese prince cursed by a witch. He’s talkative and a little sexy and he’s slowly getting larger in each chapter. These are not things cats should be or do, but Mary Brown likes animals.Nevertheless, our heroine stands strong with dignity and conquers each challenge set in her way. We miss a lot of those challenges because the book makes huge leaps in setting and time as the crew travels from London to China by river boat and on foot. Somehow, much like in Lord of the Rings (well, the film at least — I haven’t read the books), they are able to ride a train all the way back in no time after nearly dying a hundred deaths just to get the egg home to the nearly extinct dragons.Each of the previous novels ended rather annoyingly with one of those “Well, townspeople gossiped one thing may have happened, or it may have been this other way” sort of endings. You can hear in a wispy voice sighing, “We’ll never know. . . .” Dragonne’s Eg actually has a confirmed ending, perhaps overly saccharine, but it’s more satisfactory than Mary Brown essentially saying, “I don’t know how to end this thing! YOU do it!!”Because this is less of a review and more a puzzle asking why I finished a terrible book, I’m going to end with a list of some reasons:I was four books into a series, and this was the last.I was reading to my husband, who found my voices to be a hoot. It doesn’t seem to matter what we’re reading, my husband and I look forward to it each night.I wanted to know if the cat really was a cursed prince.The writing, though riddled with typos and the occasional poor sentence structure, was much improved over the course of the quartet, allowing me to read faster (and thus took us less time to get through).This all started with a novel called The Unlikely Ones, the first in the quartet, that I was assigned as an undergrad for a science fiction/fantasy class. The professor was amazingly odd and nerdy, but I respected her.So, there you have it. A terrible book. I don’t recommend it (nor can I to most of you, as it’s the 4th in a series and I haven’t really “sold” Mary Brown’s work), but I do want to know what terrible books you’ve sat through entirely, either hating or enjoying the story as you did. So why am I reading a 20-year-old book when there are so many new ones to read? Re-reading, no less? Because I finally got the sequel and decided I needed to refresh my memory. In this medieval/early Renaissance fantasy, Summer is the daughter of the village whore and a mysterious traveler who died before she was born. Her only gift from her father, aside from a dowry of foreign coins, is a ring from a unicorn's horn that allows her to communicate with animals (something she learns only as she starts on her journey).When her mother dies, Summer sets out on a journey, without much direction, until she starts accreting companions: a scruffy dog, a blind, amnesiac, but gorgeous knight, a broken-down horse who claims to be a princess (not a human in horse form, a princess of horses), a homing pigeon with a broken wing, a tortoise who's a long way from home, and a weird little pig with wings. Thinking herself in love with the knight, Summer tries to help him regain his memory and his home, and in the journey helps the others find what they're looking for as well. But she doesn't discover what she wants until it's too late.The details in this book are incredible. They're occasionally overdone, but you really feel what life was like for someone who had no wealth or powerful protector. Summer is well-educated, thanks to her mother's clients, but ignorant of the world, and makes the kind of mistakes you'd expect someone like her to make. Unfortunately, she also makes unforgivable mistakes, like not trusting her companions or doubting the ring, which make her annoying at times. She's also a naïve narrator, to the point that it was frustrating rather than clever. Fortunately, the animals are all bright in their own way, and kept me interested.This is a quest fantasy, which means the plot is a series of encounters strung together. I felt it would have been stronger if Summer's emotional journey had been more fluid and overt. She doesn't really change until the end, when her beloved knight finally reaches his home and (view spoiler)[regains his sight due to a second blow to the head. When he finally sees Summer, he declares that he loves her more than the fiancée he left behind, who is a bitch. (hide spoiler)]

Teenager Sarah is forced by her father and her stepmother to babysit her baby brother Toby while they are outside home. Set in a dystopian future, a group of people work in a facility, essentially as slaves. They do have an incentive though - a regular lottery is held and one of them gets to leave the facility and its restrictions and move to The Island, a paradise. Lincoln Six Echo is one of the workers in the facility and he is infatuated with Jordan Two Delta. His life is fairly uneventful and mundane until Jordan Two Delta gets selected to go to The Island. Then Lincoln starts to discover the truth about the facility and The Island.

The underground kingdom of Seatopia sends out Megalon, a giant beetle, and Gigan to destroy the above ground dwellers. In an attempt to stop them, an independently thinking robot brings Godzilla into the fight.

The first spaceship to Mars, presumed lost, is found in space and brought back to Earth by remote control. Only two from an initial crew of four are still alive, but one is unconscious due to an attached alien growth, while the other is traumatized, blocking out all memory of what happened. In hopes to save the unconscious crewman, the amnesiac is interrogated back into remembering. Those in charge thereby learn of the terrible dangers awaiting anyone venturing into the spooky, ruddy stillness of the very alien Martian ecosystem.

An unknown accident occurs in Tokyo Bay's Aqua Line, which causes an emergency cabinet to assemble. All of the sudden, a giant creature immediately appears, destroying town after town with its landing reaching the capital. This mysterious giant monster is named "Godzilla".

Something has destroyed Birth Island, home of Godzilla and Little Godzilla and soon, it is discovered that Godzilla has developed a bright flaming glow, indicating that his nuclear energy is growing out of control. Fearing that Godzilla will soon explode, the G-Force tries to freeze him, thus cooling his temperature. But another problem arises as a horde of human sized creatures, formed from a combination of Godzilla cells, and the weapon that destroyed the original one, The Oxygen Destroyer. Now the military must try to stop these creatures and stop Godzilla from going through a nuclear meltdown that could destroy the world.

When a plague devastated life on Earth, the population died or became a sort of zombie living in the dark. Dr. Robert Morgan is the unique healthy survivor on the planet, having a routine life for his own survival: he kills the night creatures along the day and maintains the safety of his house, to be protected along the night. He misses his beloved wife and daughter, consumed by the outbreak, and he fights against his loneliness to maintain mentally sane. When Dr. Morgan finds the contaminated Ruth Collins, he uses his blood to heal her and he becomes the last hope on Earth to help the other contaminated survivors. But the order of this new society is scary.

Canadian supernatural found footage horror thriller

The story takes place with doing a docudrama about the home he purchased in Gary, Indiana. He convinces a couple of previous tenants to come back and discuss their accounts of the frightening ordeals that they endured during their stay at the home. A woman becomes possessed and begins speaking in tongues. Following the extreme amount of activity documented, production had to be halted, but the movie has been finished one year later and, boy, are you in for one edge of your seat demonic thrill ride.

For young Charley Brewster, nothing could be better than an old horror movie late at night. Two men move in next door, and for Charley with his horror movie experience, there can be no doubt that their strange behavior is explained by the fact that they are a vampire and his undead day guardian. The only one who can help him hunt them down is a washed-up actor, Peter Vincent, who hosts Charley's favorite TV show, Fright Night. Vincent doesn't really believe that vampires exist, but does it for the money...

Ghoulies II picks up a short time after the first movie, a few of the little nasties stow away on an amusement park ride and bring big bucks to a dying fair. The creatures are mad after an attempt to kill them, so the creatures go on a rampage through the fairgrounds, ultimately leading to an explosive conclusion!
